She was flying high with a string of Top 10 pop hits between 1987-1990, including her #1 single "Love Will Lead You Back". She dropped out of nowhere and disappeared just as quickly. Where is she and why did she fall so quickly?
What happened to Taylor Dayne?

Too bad Taylor Dayne is not more prominent today. She has a great singing voice.

I saw her on Cupcake Wars as a judge, but I don't know if she still performs or records, she's married with kids now.

I always liked "Tell it to my Heart"

Arista bailed on her after her 3rd album didn't do so well in '93. She was always more a singles artist than an album artist, and that album didn't generate a hit like the first two did. She released an OK cover of Barry White's "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" but the video was kind of low budget and the song didn't reach top 10.
Taylor had occasional success in the gay clubs after that, though. I can recall "I'm Naked Without You" as a big hit for a few months. Also "I'm Not Featuring You".

I loved her image change on that second album. She was pretty harsh looking on that first album with the gigantic, crimped hair and too much make-up, but by the second album she'd toned down the hair and make-up and she looked a bit slimmer. Out of two of her more well-known ballads, "I'll Always Love You" and "Love Will Lead You Back", people usually prefer the first one, but I prefer the latter...

Igtay Otaronay did a whole routine about her, of course.

I don't like singers like her who approach every song the same way. They don't interpret songs, they just apply their voice to them. In her case, an obnoxious belting voice. Her signature hit, Tell It To My Heart, is particularly horrendous.

I miss the likes of Taylor Dayne. There isn't any "pop" music anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 2, 2014 1:26 AM |
Miss her too, she was fantastic! She performed at several Long Island bars back in the day. She should make a come back.

"The music landscape changed overnight in 1992, with the arrival of Nirvana. Metal and dance-pop were suddenly out of fashion and not getting radio play anymore."
Nonsense. If you look at the album and single charts from this era, people were listening to stuff like Janet Jackson, Whitney, Snoop Dogg, and Garth Brooks. Mariah Carey sold a hell of a lot more albums than Nirvana did.

Isn't she one of those "late-in-life" lesbians?

Coincidentially there is a profile of Taylor Dayne on the NYC channel at 11:00 p.m.

I'll Be Your Shelter is her best song, best video, best look. Too bad it wasn't the smash it deserved to be. I love this song and I love her. Which is kind of odd because her music is so not my normal genre. It can be a bit jarring when my IPod is on random and it goes from the Cowboy Junkies to Taylor Dane. I don't know what it is that makes me love her cause I normally hate her style of music.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 2, 2014 2:23 AM |
She's a ballbuster in the Leah Remini vein.

Love that song too, r1.
It reminds me of this one -- strongly

With Taylor's third album she wanted to try doing more rock-ish songs as that is her music love. She never wanted to do dance and r&b-styled pop songs but the label forced to. The fans loved the sound that the label gave her though, and her third album flopped. She never regained her momentum.
On top of that, most of the new singers who came out on the scene between 1987 and 1992 flopped by 1993/1994. There were so many people getting #1 hits, top 5 hits etc that there just wasn't room for everyone and eventually only a few survived.

I had her album where Tell It To My Heart was. I actually listened to it quite a lot (I was 15) but even at the time I though the album was pretty shitty and had only one good song, Tell It To My Heart. I liked her voice a lot, and how the songs were dance and electronic, but I thought the music was very superficial and cheap. What little I heard from her later albums she continued having bad songs. With right songs she might've been bigger, who knows. Her voice had nice rawness to it but I don't know if I'd ever call it beautiful.

I just watched the video of Tell It To My Heart from Youtube after few years and jesus how powerful it still is. No wonder I loved it when I was a teen. Her dirty voice was just perfect for this kind of hi-nrg stuff.

She had a fabulous dance track out several years ago called "Planet Love." It was long after she left Arista. Big, robust belting voice. I saw her on Broadway in "Aida" her voice is the real deal.

Finally found it. It was "Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-off." Also on that season were such luminaries as Aaron Carter, Lou Diamond Phillips, Coolio, and Joey Fatone.

I remember when she performed "I'll Always Love You" at the Apollo and I thought, "Damn, this girl is the white Patti LaBelle!" The crowd didn't give her the crazy energy they gave Lisa Stansfield who performed that same year with "All Around The World" -- they were going bananas over Stansfield, often chanting, "Go Lisa, Go Lisa!" throughout the song -- but towards the end of the performance, when Dayne unleashed that raspy, powerful range, the audience was won over. They had no choice but to give that white girl props!
Arista really screwed her over. Clive Davis was so focused on Whitney Houston's career he failed to provide that same care and attention to his other divas on the label. TV One has this show called Unsung and many divas who were at Arista at the time attest to the fact that Clive Davis really didn't give a shit about them and his main concern was only Whitney.

Hey right now on TV there's a commercial where a Dad is sitting in a car with his kid and he starts singing "Tell It To My Heart" by Taylor Dane - it's funny, but the song is still amazing after all these years. I always thought Taylor Dane was gorgeous and a bit edgy and she had that voice that was strong and unique but she could also soften it and make it sound tender and pillow-y too BTW, another singer from back at that time who I think went into the Christian music scene was Kathy Tracolli, whose voice was similar to Dane's. She did the song "Everything Changes" and if you heard it on the radio, you'd think it was Taylor Dane. I don't think Taylor was managed well enough. Whitney and Mariah were given priority.

R33...Yeah...I loved Taylor. My memory at the time was that there was talk of some bad blood between her and Clive Davis. Fighting over what her next album should be. So, in the end, it took 3 years to come out and by then it was really too late. Soul Dancing isn't bad and has its moments...but felt out of step.
She needed to work with Babyface. He was at LaFace/Arista records at the time. What a fucking shame. She could have killed some of the stuff he gave to Toni Braxton and others.

She rang her own career's death knell at Mar-a-Lago.
She was gay friendly because gay men sustained her career after the 90s. Then she took a bad check from the Trumps and did herself in.
