What an underrated actress! I haven't seen that many of her movies yet, but there's something about her face and voice that is very enthralling.

Loved her in "Only When I Laugh."
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 30, 2014 4:26 PM |
She was delightful. I love how her tombstone says "Go Away - I'm Asleep," a joking reference to her devotion to getting plenty of "beauty sleep."
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 30, 2014 4:27 PM |
Loved her in "The Last of Sheila."
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 30, 2014 4:38 PM |
didn't she come out?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 30, 2014 4:40 PM |
Love her voice. She played Judd Hirsch's sister on Taxi, IIRC.

Clearly not many.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 9, 2014 7:40 PM |
I count myself as one. Loved her in Only When I Laugh and Last of Sheila as well.
Perfect as the neurotic!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 9, 2014 7:46 PM |
She was delightful as James Garner's daffy love interest in Support Your Local Sheriff. She was also fun in the Disney adventure Treasure at Metacumbe, playing a runaway bride who teams up with Peter Ustinov and a couple of kids on a treasure hunt in the Florida keys.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 9, 2014 7:54 PM |
Yes, I first saw her in The Group.when I was in college, I saw Hackett in Night Watch on Broadway. Interesting role in a middle of the road thriller. however, I liked Joan Hackett's performance as a neurotic schemer. She was so much better than Elizabeth Taylor in the movie.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 9, 2014 7:55 PM |
I always remembered her performance in MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA on PBS. It was finally released on DVD
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 10, 2014 1:54 AM |
In recent years, she has gone by the name of Judy Davis.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 10, 2014 1:56 AM |
She always reminded me of a non-Southern Elizabeth Ashley.
And she liked to make the lez-lez.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 10, 2014 1:58 AM |
First time I saw her was in The Group in which she perfectly captured the 1930s brittle insouciance of Myrna Loy, right down to her perfectly turned-up nose.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 10, 2014 2:01 AM |
She resented Candace Bergen's entry into The Group since she was not seen as a serious actress. She was pretty mean to her.
Still, love JH and love The Group!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 10, 2014 2:09 AM |
Candace Bergen is indeed a mediocre actress where Joan Hackett was brilliantly talented.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 10, 2014 4:46 AM |
Yes, all of the Hacketts are top notch actors.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 10, 2014 4:49 AM |
I always confused her with Rachel Roberts.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 10, 2014 5:01 AM |
Interesting R14. for some reason I thought it would have been Jessica Walters or Joanna Pettit who were bitching about fresh out of two years of college Newbie Candice Bergen.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 10, 2014 2:10 PM |
I met her when I was a small child.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 10, 2014 2:20 PM |
She was in the third segment of a tv horror movie called "Dead of Night." Like "Trilogy of Terror" (the tv movie with Karen Black and the Zuni warrior doll), the first two segments were mediocre and the third was unforgettable. She played a rich woman whose son had recently drowned. Unable to accept that he's gone, she goes to psychics and spiritualists and conducts some kind of black magic ceremony to bring him back. He comes back but...well, let's just say that it he's NOT the same. Hackett's performance was wonderful and Lee Montgomery, who plays her son, is very good, too. The ending is like a punch to the gut; really shocking and scary.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 10, 2014 4:05 PM |
Where is it documented what she said about Candice Bergen?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 10, 2014 7:39 PM |
Thanks R10. I came here to bring up how much I enjoyed her in MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA. So glad it's finally available.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 10, 2014 7:44 PM |
Why is it that every time some DL twat "discovers" someone, she has to squawk about the person being "underrated"?
The world of reputation, appreciation, respect and acknowledgement does not start and end with your finding out what the rest of the thinking world already knows. Ms. Hackett gets plenty of appreciation from those of us who know her work, as well as the record of her insightful, sassy comments on the business.
We're glad you're catching up, but don't insult us in the process, you slow-poke solipsist.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 10, 2014 7:54 PM |
R23 is the perfect Datalounger: mean-spirited, probably fat, and doesn't have a basic understand English grammar or punctuation.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 10, 2014 8:35 PM |
I don't think she's underrated as much as she died young (50) and it was 30 yrs ago. She had recently had a small comeback appearing in the hit movie "Only When I Laugh." I don't think she'd be considered forgotten or underrated if she lived and continued working into the 21st century. Her talent would've continued opening doors for her.

8.9 on the Mary!Meter.

She starred in a really brilliant TV movie remake of "Diabolique." It was called "Reflections of Murder," and was relocated to the Puget Sound. Hackett played the wife, Sam Waterston her husband, and Tuesday Weld took Simone Signoret's role of the mistress. They were all great, particularly Hackett and Weld. The twist at the very end was even more chilling than in the original (I don't mean the big surprise, but the very end). Too bad it's never been released on DVD.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 10, 2014 9:25 PM |
She was once married to actor Richard Mulligan, but gossip later had her in a serious relationship with Carrie Fisher.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 10, 2014 9:28 PM |
She starred in a 1970 movie-for-television entitled "The Other Man", with Roy Thinnes, Arthur Hill and Tammy Grimes, that has always been a favorite of mine.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 10, 2014 9:33 PM |
I forgot about that R27, loved that. I wish it was available.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 12, 2014 7:33 PM |
R32, you bet you ass it's available.
Reflections of Murder (part 1)
(I'm not going to post all 10 parts, but they are there on youtube)
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 13, 2014 4:49 AM |
I used to think that she & Barbara Parkins had similar speaking voices.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 13, 2014 6:35 AM |
BUMP, because "Only When I Laugh" was on TCM's Neil Simon Fridays last night (Primetime was on her)
She was very droll. Mason was a bit too "on", and it's an odd film.
But I love that very late 70s/very early 80s era. Manhattan looked gorgeous, liveable (albeit seedy and dangerous), not yet Vegas/Tokyo excessive. Loved seeing Kristy MacNichol, who's character was the same age I was then. Kevin Bacon.
The mood, the vibe, the clothes...that really is my favorite era. Even was nostalgic seeing the junk food.
James Coco's character is a paleo-Datalounger. And, of course, you can't see all those young men and not dread what awaited them.
And, yes, Joan Hackett stole every scene.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 18, 2015 3:54 AM |
Oh, the film is available on the Watch TCM app
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 18, 2015 4:12 AM |
I liked her a lot. My only problem with her inOnly When I Want An Oscar is that her character is supposed to be a gorgeous, if vain and beginning to age glamorous. That she was not and it throws off her part of the plot. one can well imagine her character's husband trading her in for a younger model.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 18, 2015 4:23 AM |
she was great as Alex's sister who helped Latka speak his language better.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 18, 2015 4:27 AM |
I think Datalounge needs a dedicated "Only When I Laugh Thread".
David Dukes, even if straight, sure scans gay.
Girls were prettier and chicer in 1981 than the pneumatic, trashy standard of today.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 18, 2015 4:54 AM |
Saw her on Broadway in the play "Night Watch."
She was fantastic unique style and voice. Elegant.
Ran into her on a NYC bus a few years later -- sitting next to her. Down to earth and charming. I cried when I read she died.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 18, 2015 4:54 AM |
I always liked her. She died too soon.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 18, 2015 5:00 AM |
R40 Thanks for the reminiscence. She seems genuinely fun and funny, classy, and stylish.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 18, 2015 5:06 AM |
Agree about her great performances in "Reflections of Murder" and "Only When I Laugh." "Now can we just eat our FUCKING lunch?!"
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 18, 2015 10:08 AM |
R43 ehhh I watched it on TCM last night. I've seen it before and never got the praise, however I thought maybe on rewatch I would. But no.
Of course the fact that the movie is pretty campy/bad doesn't help her cause.
And how many cigs does Marsha Mason smoke in that movie? 20 years ago, I would have never noticed things like that (or if I did it seemed totally normal).
Although from what I've heard it's common for recovering alcoholics to take up smoking instead. Never mind that except in the most extreme cases of alcohol addiction the cigs will kill you quicker.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 18, 2015 11:31 AM |
I remember her in one of the television anthology episodes where she said to her husband, "You beast", but the way she said it was very funny because it was as if she was swearing for the first time.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 12, 2015 11:45 AM |
Found it was a Twilight Zone episode called A Piano in the House, and the husband was Barry Morse.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 12, 2015 12:01 PM |
An excellent actress, equally adept at comedy as well as drama!
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 12, 2015 12:15 PM |
R39, Hackett was not a "girl."
I thought she should have played the lead in Only When I Laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 12, 2015 12:57 PM |
Great actress. Very natural. It's sad that she died when she was just 49 years old.
Do you think she was in the closet?
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 11, 2016 11:35 AM |
Nothing to add. I think all was said last year. Or certainly the year before.

With Raquel Bitch Welch in 'The Last of Sheila'
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 11, 2016 1:38 PM |
Joan wanted probably to sleep with me. Maybe that's why she was a bit aggressive. Maybe i was provoking her, without realizing it.

Roger Ebert on 'Only When I Laugh': "Anyone consulting this movie for insights into alcoholism would be better off asking a bartender."
Was never a fan of Marsha Mason's overly-mannered 'acting' so that was strike 1 against it from the jump. Joan Hackett on the other hand elevated anything she appeared in. My partner is a huge fan of 'Support Your Local Sheriff' because of her.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 11, 2016 6:29 PM |
Lol, R56, fuck you Raquel. Mind your own reputation, bitchy puta.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 11, 2016 6:46 PM |
That photo from The Group at r55 reminds me of that 1920s office Christmas party that gets mileage here every year.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | April 12, 2016 1:10 AM |
Dead of the Night is badly directed and just plain stupid so not a great showcase for Joan.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 18, 2016 2:55 AM |
I would have loved to see her and Paula Prentiss as sisters in a movie like Big Business. They both had great voices and comedic timing.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 18, 2016 3:11 AM |
Raquel Welch has obviously had some work done. She held up so well for so long. She just looks overdone now.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 18, 2016 3:44 AM |
I would have loved to see Joan and Sandy Dennis together.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 18, 2016 5:34 AM |
She was very well thought of, she just died fairly early. Most people loved her. Every one knew her name.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 18, 2016 5:40 AM |
How Awful About Allan is another film that wastes Joan. Her stuttering reminds me of Sandy Dennis.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | April 22, 2016 12:12 PM |
Did she ever playing a leading role on film??
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 23, 2016 12:38 PM |
I always confused her with mom.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 23, 2016 6:33 PM |
I read that she was a lesbian, but i didn't find anything to support this. She was once married to Richard Mulligan. Do you know any details about her supposed lesbianism?

I loved her brother in Muscle Beach Party.

We need "A Last of Sheila" thread. I loved that movie.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 3, 2016 1:48 PM |
I loved her in The Group, a movie I watch every couple of years. Neat watching them all so young and thinking about the careers they all had following it...
...other than Mary Robin Redd, whoever she was.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | June 3, 2016 2:53 PM |
"Dead of Night is badly directed and just plain stupid so not a great showcase for Joan."
It wasn't meant to be a "showcase for Joan." She starred in a segment, but she was not the star of the production. And it wasn't "badly directed" or "just plain stupid." You seem just plain stupid, though.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 6, 2016 6:56 PM |
She was classy and a looker.......great actress..........I agree with another poster,,,,,,,,,,the tv movie she made ......the other man............with Roy Thinnes in 1970 was incredible. even tho it was a highly unique made for tv movie, I would have to say its my favorite movie out of everything.........you can watch it on u tube........terrible quality and faded or you can find it on dvd..but I dont think the quality is too good on those either from what Ive heard. Its a 48 year old made for tv movie, guess you would have to expect that.

Wonderful actress with a distinctive memorable voice.
She was also a stickler for beauty sleep.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 23, 2018 11:34 PM |
She and Paula Prentiss were the most underused, undervalued actresses of the 1960s. Beautiful, talented, smart, and wonderfully sexy voices.
However, they were both kind of nuts.
