Got the role of Laurie Partridge at the age of 17. Had her greatest role in LA Law as Grace Van Owen.

Why did she retire from acting?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | August 23, 2021 1:15 PM |
Retired? More like she wasn't wanted.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 31, 2014 7:48 PM |
She was no longer a looker.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 31, 2014 7:51 PM |
She became too demanding & had fleas in her cunt. So she got the boot.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 31, 2014 7:54 PM |
It's simple.
Anyone who stars on a successful TV show that runs for a while becomes identified with that role, and it's difficult for them to find work once the show is done.
Susan Dey had two successful TV show runs, which puts her far ahead of the pack.
One-role-and-done is much, much more common.
Are you new to all of this, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 31, 2014 7:57 PM |
She thought she was all that. She had that sitcom which she demanded changes and they said, "OK" and changed her with the untalented one from "Designing Women."
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 31, 2014 7:59 PM |
She wasn't much of an actress. She was very pretty, but she should have stuck to modeling rather than acting.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 31, 2014 8:15 PM |
God, such bullshit posed here... I don't mind gossip, but please back it up somehow.
I mean really, "fleas in her cunt"? Is that supposed to be witty or just vulgar? Dude, you've got problems if you think witty.
"Wasn't wanted?" Says who, besides some uninformed poster. If she was, give us a link or the usual tale of, "a friend of a friend who was a temp at a casting agency told me..."
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 31, 2014 9:05 PM |
I don't think she'd ever acted before she was cast on "The Partridge Family." She'd been a teen model before.
She was skinny as a rail due to anorexia. I remember in some magazine she complained about people "harping about how I'm too thin." She was 5'7 and weighed 97 pounds! When the young Danny Bonaduce saw her in a bikini he blurted out "you look horrible!" He also related how somebody had brought some fudge to the Partridge Family set one day. He said that Susan Dey didn't know what it was! He said they told her "it's FUDGE, it's CANDY." Obviously she'd never even laid eyes on such a thing, much less eaten it. She ate a lot of raw carrots, so much so that her skin was turning orange. I think later in life she recovered from her anorexia but she was always very thin.
She tried playing against the wholesome teen girl image she got by playing Laurie Partridge. She was in some tv movie where she played a girl unjustly sent to a juvenile prison. And she starred in another tv movie "Mary Jane Harper Cried Last Night" where she's a psychotic young single mother who brutalizes her small child. I thought she was pretty good in it. The actress who played her battered little girl was the same one who played the young Sybil in the Sybil miniseries. I wonder what all that did to HER psyche.

I thought Susan was gorgeous in The Partridge Family, which one of my coworkers thinks is crazy.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 31, 2014 9:09 PM |
Thanks to her husband producing all of those Lifetime movies, Susan doesn't have to work another day in her life.
I think she's content to stay out of the limelight and be with her family.
Modeling wasn't even her idea, it was her stepmother's.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 31, 2014 9:09 PM |
No one voluntarily "retires' from acting.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 31, 2014 9:13 PM |
She had a reputation as being difficult to work with on every project she ever booked. She seems like an unhappy person. She left LA Law in a huff, then when the dust settled a few years later and she was able to get a sitcom job, she tanked that, too, leaving mid-run.
Maybe she's not even looking for work, now, but even if she was, her reputation is terrible and she'd never be able to book a role as as series regular. Who would hire her as a regular on a series, after she keeps quitting/getting fired mid-way through? There's too much money on the line with a series for any producer to take that kind of risk. And she doesn't have the kind of spectacular talent that might balance the equation out so that it would be worth the risk. So, no dice.

I love R8. She sounds INSANE!!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 31, 2014 9:50 PM |
She always seemed bitter about her years on Partridge.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 31, 2014 10:49 PM |
She was very good in FIRST LOVE with William Katt.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 31, 2014 10:53 PM |
She was good on LA Law.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 31, 2014 10:54 PM |
She was absolutely gorgeous as a youth, pretty in a way girls aren't now.
Bonadouche, what a turdtard.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 31, 2014 10:57 PM |
Bonaduce was an ugly little troll, Susan Dey was pretty as Laurie. He was lucky to get a few of David Cassidy's leftovers at the time.

I always thought this too.

Susan on Rosie in 1996. She's highly complimentary toward Shirley Jones.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 31, 2014 11:12 PM |
She will be 62 in December. This pic is a couple of years old.
I know she has one daughter. I wonder if she's become a grandmother?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 31, 2014 11:17 PM |
She looks like somebody else famous in the more contemporary pics... and I can't name whom. I think it's someone who was in ER or CHICAGO HOPE - one of those medical procedurals.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 31, 2014 11:17 PM |
Do you mean the actress who played Susan in theearly years of ER? Similar type but a huge flake IRL, contrary to her character's role.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 31, 2014 11:27 PM |
God, she's a gorgeous teenager. You can see why every boy in the country was in love with her.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 31, 2014 11:27 PM |
Sherry Stringfield? No. It's someone else
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 31, 2014 11:29 PM |
R24 - She was prettier than Maureen. Eve was prettier than Maureen.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 31, 2014 11:30 PM |
Whoa, in that pic of her at 56 it looks like she just gave up
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 31, 2014 11:32 PM |
She still looks beautiful. I'm glad that she doesn't seem to have had any plastic surgery.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 31, 2014 11:33 PM |
I don't think she looks bad in the pic. She's clearly keeping up her hair appointments.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 31, 2014 11:35 PM |

R30, I remember that episode, pretty brazen for 70's television.

Laurie! Laurie! Laurie!
It's always Laurie! Laurie! Laurie!
Isn't Dey spelled D E Y?

Susan's nickname in high school was "DooDah."

You're welcome.

Suzanne, go back to hitting your tambourine off beat.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 1, 2014 2:42 PM |
Re--R12, and R19--why would you think that? From TV interviews she seemed the opposite, and full of laughter. All the print interviews did not portray any sadness in her. Also, I've read that everybody loved working with her , wherever she was. Where did you get your perceptions from?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 4, 2014 11:20 AM |
R14: where did you read that she was bitter about the P.F. years?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 4, 2014 11:24 AM |
The drinking didn't help much, y'know
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 4, 2014 11:29 AM |
Even with all that she had going for her, she was anorexic and later an alcoholic, which I read that she overcame. When she started Partridge Family, she moved in with one of the show's writers, who was well over 10 yrs. her senior, and then her first husband was more than twice her age. (Lenny Hirshan died recently; wonder if she attended his funeral? Couldn't find any news of that). Her current one is 13 yrs. her senior.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 4, 2014 11:40 AM |
When was she drinking?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 4, 2014 9:30 PM |
She was a cunt. She thought she was better than she was. She was a foul mouth, ungrateful little shit.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 4, 2014 9:33 PM |
R42: Are you sure you know who she was?? She had a squeaky clean image ( other than alcohol), has been married to the same man since 1993, and I've never heard her utter a foul word. Where are you getting your info from?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 6, 2014 5:12 AM |
Actually, it was since 1988, not 1993
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 6, 2014 5:30 AM |
Didn't she get fired from sitcom for not being funny?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 6, 2014 5:35 AM |
[quote]The actress who played her battered little girl was the same one who played the young Sybil in the Sybil miniseries. I wonder what all that did to HER psyche.
Natasha Ryan had horrible, controlling stage parents who thought of her as a cash cow and kicked her out at 13 because she didn't want to act anymore. She was homeless at times during her teens and grew up to be an off-the-grid hippie type.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 6, 2014 5:58 AM |
I can't get passed the fleas in her cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 6, 2014 6:17 AM |
I pretended to have a big crush on David Cassidy, but it was really Susan Dey that I lusted after.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 6, 2014 6:22 AM |
In Shirley Jones' recently-published autobiog, she says she still hears from Susan, but Susan categorically refuses to discuss the Partridge Family years publicly. A - because during that time, Susan had a huge crush on David Cassidy which ended badly (they dated once when the show was over - David had been oblivious to shy Susan's crush, according to Shirley - and the date ended when David told Susan he thought of her as a sister) and B - because Susan was desperately unhappy all thru the PF years - anorexic, unsure of what she was doing, hated growing up on TV.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 6, 2014 7:33 AM |
As a kid, she was my first girl crush. While my friends had photos of David Cassidy on their walls, I had Susan Dey. I entered and won a contest held by The Partridge Family magazine that involved Susan Dey. I won a record, a small amount of cash and a "Help Susan" card.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 6, 2014 7:41 AM |
It was inspiring how she succeeded even with that unfortunate tooth.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 6, 2014 8:22 AM |
She has a really weird face that was utterly gorgeous as teen but got progressively uglier as she got older, like a fairytale curse.
Even on LA Law the ugly was creeping in.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 6, 2014 8:48 AM |
To elaborate: all women lose their looks as they get older, but her beauty didn't just fade, her face actually turned from pretty to ugly. And it was happening even in her 20s, as the pics at the link show.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 6, 2014 9:00 AM |
Here's the famous Brady Bunch vs Partridge Family sketch from SNL. Susan doesn't make a huge impression. Siobahn Fallon as a spastic Tracy Partridge is my favorite.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 6, 2014 10:50 AM |
I've wondered why Susan Dey didn't have a French accent in "La Law."
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 6, 2014 11:20 AM |
R50: Excellent post; any more info would be great. R53: I do vaguely remembering that something was awry with some of her teeth ( any idea which one?), and it looks like she had caps on the two front ones when she got to LA Law.
R54 & R55: Are you serious?? This is the first time that I've ever heard anyone say that she "turned ugly" later on. What part of her facial features are you referring to?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 6, 2014 2:21 PM |
She wasn't the biggest cunt I've ever worked with but she was the next to it
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 7, 2017 6:34 PM |
I think she looks ok to me ! Wish I was looking so good at my 62 !
by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 7, 2017 7:26 PM |
She was so good on L.A. Law and her career just ended so fast. If she couldn't get another role in a TV series or movie she certainly could have done commercials.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 18, 2021 1:31 AM |
As a child, I watched The Partridge Family and thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world. Now, when I see her pictures, I find her to be cute, in a girl next door way, at best.

Stood in line for movie tickets behind Bonaduce about ten years ago. He was tiny and super skeevy/rough looking. Wore skinny jeans and weird metrosexual boots. Annoying, too.
