Monroe gets raped.
Tonight, on a very special "Too Close For Comfort"

WTF! This was the Reagan years right?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 30, 2014 10:27 PM |
#1, if you're talking about that episode, it was unintentionally hilarious. And inappropriate for such an airhead sitcom (though would have worked for a Good Times-type show).
It plays like a kiddie show now, it's so dumb. JM J. Bullock was queenie through the roof, and they all lived in Frisco... but they decided to make him a moron the family adopted like a stray.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 30, 2014 10:37 PM |
I don't think it's fair to call it "rape" when the victim had pre-lubed.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 30, 2014 11:53 PM |
This episode is on antenna tv right now.

Is that woman at the end Kathy KInney?
I don't remember Jim J. Bullock having such a good build, despite the queeniness and those hideous clothes.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 11, 2014 7:10 AM |
Is JM still alive?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 11, 2014 7:12 AM |
Yes, r7. Took me two seconds to highlight his name and select "search with Google." He's 59 and is HIV positive.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 11, 2014 7:19 AM |
I don't think it's Kathy Kinney. She was on "Newhart" at the time (this episode is from 1985) and was much thinner than that back then.
R5, I hope you recorded it because the IMDb doesn't have the actress' name listed!

Oh big man behind his keyboard in complete anonymity.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 11, 2014 12:56 PM |
I didn't even realize that was him.
I first saw him on Hollywood Squares.... where he looked completely different.

Was it [italic]rape[/italic] rape?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 11, 2014 1:30 PM |
Was his character gay?
Or did they make it seem like a woman jumped him?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 11, 2014 1:38 PM |
Jim took the initials JM on Too Close... because his favorite actor was JW King and the M is an upside down "Double U".

This show is soooo bad it's good. Antenna TV on weeknights at 10. It's sort of my go to when I climb into bed, take a little xnx, and set the 60min auto off for tv to turn off.
Ted Knight's character, his wife, and the dark haired daughter are the only watchable characters. The mother-in-law seems to come and go but likeable. Definitely a different era as the mother-in-law made reference to an "oriental."
uh-oh, starts in two mins. gotta go. Can't miss the opening them played by trumpets.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 25, 2015 5:59 AM |
I love TCFC but that was a really bad episode. Monroe was meant to be straight like Paul Lynde, Charles Nelson Reilly and Rip Taylor.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 25, 2015 3:09 PM |
It shows you how insane the times were when even a giant queen like JM J Bullock had to play straight. Now gay characters are all over tv and a macho, straight-guy oriented show like the Walking Dead just had two gay male characters tongue-kissing each other. That would've been unthinkable not that long ago. How far we've come!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 25, 2015 3:16 PM |
They should remake this show starring John Travolta, and a ten-foot-pole that appears when he is too close for comfort.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 25, 2015 3:16 PM |
"Ted Knight's character, his wife, and the dark haired daughter are the only watchable characters."
Er, there are only two other main characters, the blonde daughter and Monroe Ficus.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 25, 2015 4:23 PM |
I remember seeing this episode when it was on syndication as a kid. It was so confusing, because even then it seemed obvious he was gay and unlikely to get it up for a woman. And the cops laughed at him until they saw the women, and then they believed him because the women were fat and ugly. Sitcoms sure have changed.

Jim J. Bullock is genuinely funny If he was starting out now he would have better opportunities.
But as it stands he just HAD to go and the "Jim J. & Tammy Faye Show".
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 25, 2015 5:15 PM |
He was never funny. A mincing, lisping, grossly hirsute weirdo is only funny as a freak. But I guess you consider that a good thing.

"Jim J. Bullock is genuinely funny ..."
Now THAT'S funny!

Ted Knight was really just a hack without MTM's writers.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 25, 2015 5:35 PM |
I loved Ted Knight, but "Too Close For Comfort" was total garbage. It was awful in every way. I watched a couple of episodes in the first season and dropped it.

Nancy is an American sitcom that aired on NBC during the 1970-1971 television season, with Renne Jarrett in the title role.
While Nancy Smith, daughter of the President of the United States, is vacationing in fictitious Center City, Iowa, she meets and marries veterinarian Adam Hudson.
Celeste Holm appeared as Abby Townsend, the press secretary of the First Lady, Nancy's official chaperone.
Robert F. Simon appeared as Everett McPherson, Dr. Hudson's uncle.
William Bassett starred as Agent Turner of the United States Secret Service; Ernesto Macias was Agent Rodriguez; Frank Aletter played Tom Daily; and Eddie Applegate played local reporter Willie Maxwell.
Ted Knight was cast as the President but the show was cancelled before he made an onscreen appearance.

Cosmic Cow?? What was Cosmic Cow's mission?
And the late in life baby Andy who never has any toys or baby paraphernalia lying around. Baby Judith in The Walking Dead has more toys and is being toted by hand up the east coast while dodging walkers.

I always liked Ted Knight. He was brilliant as Ted Baxter but he hated the character because it, of course, typecast him forever. Even TCFC could not completely shake the "curse" of Ted Baxter. Some of the line deliveries were the same, even though his character on TCFC had a brain, at least. I always found Knight attractive. And this may not be obvious, but he had a great ass. YES, a great big butt that stuck out! I always wondered if he was self-conscious about it or even liked it because he walked with it stuck way out and his chest thrust forward, sort of like a strutting rooster. This was, I thought, his "Ted Baxter" walk but he also did it on his own show. I think he had a bit of a swayback. Anyway, not to hijack the thread but Bullock was the most annoying mincing queen on that show. A true Stepinfetchit. Not sure how HE felt about those years or his career. He sure didn't do a darned thing for gay rights or gay presence. He was the gayest straight guy on TV around that time. The Tammy Faye thing did not help his image, either. I know he is Poz and spoke about it for years. Does anyone know what he does these days? Is he a stand-up comedian? Does he still act? I guess I could Google him but I don't really care that much. He DID seem like a nice guy. I am sorry I sound so harsh. But it's all true.
Sad that Knight died from cancer back in the 80's. BTW, he had some fights with Ed Asner sometimes on the MTM show because of his "attitude." I think he grew to hate playing Ted Baxter and this spilled over onto the set and his behavior. Asner has gone on record saying he could be "difficult." I think they buried the hatched eventually.

Were we supposed to actually believe that Monroe was straight? Not a chance.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 25, 2015 8:02 PM |
Terrible show. I hated Too Close for Comfort, as well as Bosom Buddies and It's A Living. They all started around the same time (Nov. 1980) and all three sucked ass.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 25, 2015 8:28 PM |
r30, Knight also had some very sexy feet, if you are into that sort of thing.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 25, 2015 9:04 PM |
Wow, that episode both expanded and trivialized our consciousness of rape!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 25, 2015 9:25 PM |
JM J. Bullock was "crypto-gay" on that show — very much a minstrel with a bunch of jokes about what a sissy he was.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 25, 2015 9:28 PM |
Knight was a freeper, and everyone knew flaming Bullock was gay, of course, you couldn't miss it from space. But freepy Knight didn't want to believe it and never would've accepted it. So Bullock stayed in his glass closet.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 25, 2015 9:32 PM |
The two daughters said in some Internet article he was very hard to work with. Also I read somewhere, supposedly Jm did not realize he himself was gay while doing the show which I find hard to believe.
Show sucked, theme song great and opening credits remind me of Tales of the City.

Opening credits to [italic]Nancy[/italic] (see R28). It got decent ratings but was suddenly cancelled in 1971. Sidney Sheldon speculated that Richard Nixon pressured NBC to kill the show.

I used to know Lydia Cornell's best friend. Jim Ford. He is hung af. I know they still work in the business. He was a model that did a lot of cologne and abercrombie stuff and played bit parts. He was in a series that died in primetime in the 90s while putting himself through USC. He and her were the strangest pair. They are both very (I mean VERY) smart. They both were alcoholics/addicts. Jim put everything up his nose but a bus. I lusted after him for 4 years and I never knew he was bi. I know his first gay love is famous and in the closet., He said the big fuck you to corp Hollywood and walked away for years. I saw him in BevHills 6 years ago. He remembered me and I wanted to tell him. He looks even better which is impossible. He was staying at her place (they were neighbors) while they filmed some pilot or reality gig. They did radio. They are both addicted to charity. His nudes were leakedl. I'm still lusting. They are still bffs. She divorced her scumbag husband. She is very well known and respected for her work behind the scenes as is he. Every once in a while there is press but they don't call the paps. His heart is as big as his hang. So is hers. Damn do gooders. His real name isn't the name that's pubic. It was always weird. Awesome people in all honesty. I'm a manager of a bar and grille in BevHills and I see her and she's always so nice but I'm awkward around her becasue I think she always knew but he was totally blind to me buy nice. Kelsey Grammer Gene Simmons Corbin Bleu and a bunch of them were sued by Lydia Cornell's stalker. Look it up. If anyone cares I know somemore stuff and a little dirt.

J used to bartend where we worked. Lydia and him used to hang out when she came and sat at the bar during his shift. He used to deny they were banging even though we didn't believe him until we found out about KR. He was the drakaar guy too. Also he wasn't 21 when he got hired. He just turned 19. What place do you work in? I'll drop in. I am in the Valley now. Encino.

Bullock was good as Monroe, and was the best character on TCFC, keeping the sitcom running far after its sell-by date. It's too bad he was forced to play straight by the producers and the network. The 80s were not a happy time, as fear over the AIDS crisis was at its peak and all progress in gay rights had come to a temporary halt.
Still, Bullock managed to make the character as gay as possible and was able to display his gifts for comedy.
After the sitcom was canceled, Bullock found TV work hard to find. He eventually turned to the stage, playing to good reviews as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray for many years in various productions.

I saw JM J. Bullock in a national touring production of "Hairspray," but he played Wilbur Turnblad, not his wife Edna. He wasn;t very good.
The Edna was quite good (the best thing in the show), but I can't remember who played her. It was a guy i had never heard of before.
