How was the movie?

Wonderful, r1. I loved it; Amma Asante is a promising director, and it's an opulent production (I wouldn't be shocked if it's Oscar nominated for Costume Design), but the real glory belongs to the script and the cast -- this is one of those rare screenplays where there's a bounty of complex themes going on throughout the film, with every character given rich depth, and the cast responds marvelously. Definitely one of the best films I've seen so far this year.

I want to see it. I wonder why this film isn't advertised as much? the cast is incredible.

I don't know r3. It's beyond frustrating that a smart, sophisticated, complex film such as "Belle" (or "Under the Skin," which is admittedly a very challenging film to watch) is barely getting noticed by the critics while they compete to see who can jizz the most over the Godzilla poster.

Saw Belle a few weeks back and loved it. I'm very glad to see Sam Reid's star in on the rise. I knew him socially in 2010 through my boyfriend at the time. He's a ginger in real life (not dark like in Belle), a smoker, and he's Australian and moved to London to study around the time I met him. He came across as very shy kind of the 'deep artist' type. He was just starting out at the time and when I had met him he was actually filming a docu-drama where he played Prince Harry I don't know if that ever got released.

Oh, and yes he had a boyfriend at the time so definitely family though I'm sure if he goes on to Hollywood he'll be forced back in the closet to get work.

I work at the Toronto Film Festival and got to see Belle when it premiered here last September great movie a bit sappy at times but great. I worked on the press conference for the film which included escorting members of the cast in to the waiting area before the conference began. Sam is gorgeous but he seemed almost painfully shy he didn't really interact with anyone. Miranda Richardson who I'm a big fan off was beyond awesome she took pics with a lot of us and was really funny talking about getting drunk at her hotel bar the night before. Tom Wilkinson on the other hand was a total asshole he clearly didn't want to be there.

Sam Reid is scorching hot. Hopefully, he doesn't go back into the closet if his career takes off. There's not much on him, but I don't think he's done any bearding?

I did summer acting classes with him in 2005. It was intensive time, so my conversations with him were pretty much limited to things immediately happening, other than him saying he's from Sydney. He might very well be gay, but back then he was having a fling with another Australian girl in class.

It's sad that in this day and age actors have to stay closeted in order to remain commercial and watch their star rise but that's the way it is. My opinion based on observations, is that Sam Reid's "housemate" as he calls him, is actually his boyfriend.

my personal hunch is that Sam is gay. The reason I feel like that is because of the rumours about him and Douglas Booth being an item for about a year after they finished shooting the Riot Club together and then suddenly their appearances together stopped. Sam didn't go to Toronto to promote the film at TIFF and at the London opening, Sam and Douglas seemed to keep a distance between themselves.

Well I always thought Douglas was gay from the second I saw him in The Riot Club. Why do 'celebs' still feel they can't publicly come out? I mean I can understand if they haven't yet come to terms with their sexuality but why hide it, it's just as beautiful and valid as any other kind of love.

Actors, particularly TV and movie, stay closeted because they're afraid it'll affect their career. Or they're told by managers/agents that it will.

R130 It's not a matter of actors feelings they can't come out it's a matter of actors being told not to come out by their agents, producers, casting directors etc. The prevailing attitude within the industry is that if you're openly gay you won't get work. The thinking is that the audience won't buy or be believe an openly gay actor playing the straight romantic lead or the action hero. Also the big budget blockbusters are very dependent on box office from foreign markets where homosexuality is still very taboo or outlawed, so having an openly gay actor in a leading role might prevent the movie from even being screened in those countries.

I've following Sam's career since Belle and I think he's a fantastic actor.

My ex is a Canadian actor based in Toronto but Canada doesn't have a star system like other countries so there is absolutely zero interest in Canadian actor's private lives, so you can be openly gay and no one gives a damn. After having solidly established himself in Toronto, he decided to give LA a shot. He met with an agent who was going to sign him up and he was basically told that he would not get any work if he was out as casting directors would see him as too big of a risk for leading roles. She told him under no circumstances could he come out publicly if he wanted to work in this town and that she wouldn't take him on as a client if he was wanted to come out because she wouldn't be able to make money off of him.

He ended up getting cast on a Disney-ABC show and the producers and his agents wanted him to beard with one of his co-stars to drum up publicity for the show but it was cancelled before that could happen. He ended up leaving LA two years.

I think it's horrendous that any person should have to do that for the sake of their career, I can't imagine the psychological toll it could possibly have on them after awhile. It honestly shouldn't make a difference what an actors sexuality is as they are 'acting' and it's think very sad when you hear situations of a gay person hiding their sexuality by committing to a heterosexual relationship (with the partner not being aware) and then eventually leaving them. I knew someone that happened too and the woman had to have years of counselling after.

I can only hope things will progress so that closeting and bearding aren't necessary within the industry. I know that their are loads of gay actors and one very successful actor that comes to mind is Ian McKellen but perhaps he's a minority?

R133 In reality there aren't that many openly gay actors out there. If you look at most openly gay actors like Neil Patrick Harris, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer etc. most kept quiet about their sexuality until their careers were established and they couldn't avoid the tabloid rumors anymore.

I was never a big fan of the original Prime Suspect, but I will watch it for Sam!!! I've pretty much seen everything is done and not only is good to look at, he's a damn good actor.

I've never regretted reading a book so much because the script for Prime Suspect 1973 is so fucking shite that perhaps if I didn't know anything about the storyline then the show might actually be enjoyable. Such an injustice to the original Prime Suspect series as well as Lynda LaPlantes' writing.

Sam has a movie currently playing on demand, a romantic melodrama called Despite the Falling Snow, about a Russian official (Sam) at the height of the Cold War who falls in love with and marries a woman (Rebecca Ferguson) who turns out to be a spy for the U.S. and discovers decades later the sacrifice she made for him. It's a bit predictable and low-budget, but still gripping and features a fine cast that includes Charles Dance, Anthony Head, TOliver Jackson-Cohen and out gay actor Thure Lindhardt. DLers will love it for Ferguson's Lee Grant-in-Airport '77 wig for the modern sequences. DLers of the female persuasion may like it for the lesbian subplot.

Sam has another movie coming out, a thriller called 2:22; he doesn't appear in the trailer, but there's also Michiel Huisman to drool over.

I actually just watched Belle for the first time last weekend and thought Sam was both good looking and very talented. Sad to see his career didn't really take off after this part.
