Carol Burnett and Joe Hamilton
Did she have an affair with him when he was still married to wife #1? Anyone know what attracted her to a man with 8 kids? I listened to a few of her audiobooks on a road trip and she didn't say a word about any of his kids from the first marriage.
A lot of stuff about her, Joe and the girls as a family but nothing about his first family.

Did Carol go into any detail about meeting Joe Hamilton in her first book. In Carrie and Me, she talks about how they all did things together as a family and when Joe and Carrie were in rehab together.

Carol and Joe were married to other people when they began their affair.
They left their spouses so they could be together.
Joe's family was devastated, and sided with his first wife. They wanted nothing to do with Carol, and labelled her a home-wrecker.

I wonder what life was like for Joe's kids from the first marriage after their father left. From what Carol wrote in her books, Carrie, Erin, and Jody had a very privileged childhood. Joe's kids had to have been teens to toddlers when he divorced the first wife.

I love Carol, and I think she's been bracingly, even courageously, honest and forthright about so many things, most notably going public with Carrie about the addiction/rehab stuff back in the '70s when that took a lot more guts than it would today, also her very honest memoir about her messy childhood and family life growing up, etc. etc.
HOWEVER, I think she's also probably shrewd enough to realize that her lasting stardom and appeal is heavily based on the public's feeling of warmth and affection for her... and that therefore getting into talking about the nitty-gritty details of events or times when she might come out looking unsympathetic or like she was in the wrong - like beginning the relationship with Hamilton when he was married with eight kids, or the whole FADE OUT-FADE IN brouhaha - is probably gonna be sort of unproductive, unhelpful, and not worth it to her. I think it's probably different for other elderly stars - a Bette Davis or a Marlon Brando could tell pretty much any damn story of bad behavior they wanted in an autobiography, and know that their legend and their public appeal was not based on the public needing to feel they were warm, nice people. But if you're Carol Burnett, there's probably always the knowledge in the back of your head of how very, VERY much everyone you encounter really wants to think of you as "that nice Carol Burnett" and wants to believe that the warm, funny, approachable persona of the show-opening Q&As really is who you have always been offstage, as well.
Just a hunch, though!

They separated during Mama's Family. That's the reason why Carol stopped appearing on the show. Things got too bitter between them. But they reconciled when she found out he was dying.
They were together for almost twenty years and had three children. While the facts about them getting together might have been sordid, it was obvious they truly loved one another.

I love that there runs through DL a certain melodramatically puritanical, pearl-clutching viewpoint that somehow co-exists with the prevailing "Present your hole/mussy to all available comers!" philosophy of life.

Carol is the product of a dysfunctional home, her mother died from alcoholism related illness.
She hooked up with Joe because she saw his immediate family's having 8 kids. She wanted that perceived stability.
Then why'd she end up with an alcoholic, herself? It's really weird, children of dysfunctional families, particularly where alcohol is related, find comfort in the familiarity: they think they can 'fix it' in their adulthoods, to make their damaged childhood/psyche vanish.

At one time, Carol Burnett had the highest Q-score for likabilty than anyone in the entertainment industry. But as posters in DL threads concerning celebrities and service personnel have noted, she can be a bitch. I suspect that she guards her public image with the utmost attention.
IIRC, in her autobiographies, she said of her first marriage that she wed way too young. In addition, she had the responsibility of raising her (half) sister.

I thought it was amusing that Carol reduced her whole experience with "Fade Out, Fade In" to the sentence "my Broadway career did not work out as I had hoped" in her book.
She behaved incredibly unprofessionally on that show. She cost people their jobs and cost Juke Styne the bundle he put in to finance it.
The only person on that show who didn't end up hating her and Joe was Dick Patterson, and she rewarded him with giving him regular bit parts on her TV show.

I went to the recent (October) Mark Twain awards show at which Burnett was lauded. I saw her backstage and she was pretty nasty to a PA. When she realized someone saw her, although I'm a nobody as far as "celebrity" goes, she did a 180.

No, No R18 - Carol ENDED UP with an alcoholic (Joe); she did not become one herself. (Yet, it appears both parents' genes (C & J) for such disorder surfaced in Carrie : addictive behavior.)

She milked the parts of her past that would do her some good: her grandmother raising her, her parents, always wonderful but - darn it! - alcoholics. She compared her father to Jimmy Stewart (a bit of a stretch, well, they were both tall and skinny).
Her first memoir ended with the beginning of the CB Show so all she had to do was ignore the "Fade In/Out" disaster which her greediness caused.

Carol said their marriage started falling apart around the time they found out about carries drug problem.
The way carol wrote about her and joe and their active involvement with their 3 daughters and the production of her show, it doesn't appear that joe had much involvement with his kids from his first marriage after he divorced.
When she wrote about carries illness, she wrote extensively about Erin and Jody being there for carrie during her illness but again noting about joes children and whether they were there for carrie, maybe they weren't, but still.

From Vicki Lawrence's autobiography:
A funny thing happened the day I signed with Lorimar. Carol called and said, 'I think I'd like to put together maybe a little syndicated show with the family characters. I'll do Eunice, you do Mama. Doesn't that sound like fun?' I said, 'It does, but I just signed with Lorimar to do Mama's Family for Joe.' It became a very abrupt conversation, and Carol hung up. I then went to Al and asked him what he made of the whole thing. He agreed it was really weird. I wondered if I was about to get caught in the middle of yet another struggle between the two of them . . . During her divorce, Carol and I went through a 'cool' period. She 'divorced' everyone and remained distant for a lot of years. She called the house a few years ago. I was standing at the sink peeling carrots, fifteen feet from the phone, but Garrett got to it first and I only heard his half of the following conversation: 'Hello? Oh hi. Yeah, sure, he's in the other room, on the other line. You want me to tell him you're calling? My mom's here, you want to talk to her? No? Okay. Goodbye.' When he hung up I asked him who it was. 'Carol Burnett.' I was shocked. 'What did she say?' 'She didn't want to talk to you. She only wanted to talk to Dad.' Al called her back later that night, made a point of telling her how much we missed and loved her, and she told him, 'I'll be back. It's just going to take a while longer. Give me another year or so."

I can remember Harvey Korman (who was supposedly not at all easy to work with) talking about becoming discontented on the show, and acting out. Carol called him into her dressing room and said "I hear you're not happy..." and proceeded to basically lay down the law and told him to improve his attitude or leave. It did not sound like sweet Carol we all know and love. She sounded like a real boss-lady. And he did eventually leave. Dick Van Dyke did not have an easy time on the show either.
Also, if you watch her into to the final episode of the show, she really let her guard down a bit in her closing remarks. "We've been up in the ratin's and we been down in the ratin's." It's quite remarkable to watch.
The one time I met her she was sweet and goofy. It struck me how small she is. Up on that stage at Television City during those Q & A sessions they made her look positively statuesque.

Too bad she wasn't just a little harder on him. She should have insisted he knock it off with breaking character and cracking up at Tim Conway. Fun for him and Tim, and maybe the live audience, but it was unprofessional and got old and boring really fast for the TV viewing audience.

R36 she does mention Lyle Waggoner (by first name only) in the very beginning.
I always wondered if he was fired or left the show on his own accord to do Wonder Woman.
Frankly, he was not very good on the show. Not cut out for sketch comedy and it seemed like they used him less and less as his time there went on. But he made a fortune in Hollywood star trailer rentals.

R42 I always sensed some weirdness between her and Vicki.
In the recent DVD intros, done just before Korman's death, she seems warm toward Korman and Conway. I think knowing everyone's time there is short will tend to do that. Both she and Conway are 81. I'm gonna be sad when she goes. I was a huge fan of the syndicated Carol Burnett and Friends as a little kid.

Lyle quit the Burnett show because he felt he was being marginalized - only playing the hunky guy, while the others all played many different characters. Honestly, he wasn't much of an actor or a comedian, unlike the others. So he didn't renew his contract and went off in search of other work (Wonder Woman, etc.). Turns out the Burnett people were right - he really wasn't much of an actor and didn't work all that much after Wonder Woman left the air. So he found his new business and made a fortune leasing trailers to the stars.
But Burnett held a grudge for him leaving and never fully forgave him - he never appeared on any reunion specials or shows...

Carol's version of the Harvey situation from her book “Now, at times Harvey could get into a mood. This morning, in his Elvis getup, he was definitely not a happy camper. I’d always ignore him whenever he got like that, because the next thing you knew he would turn on a dime and go back to being his hysterically funny and loveable self. But not this morning. I could practically see the black cloud hovering over his head. He was actually scowling. As far as I was concerned, he could scowl at me till the cows came home, but this time he scowled at our guests and was short with them. After the taping, when everyone was changing for our camera run-through, I went to Harvey’s dressing room and knocked on the door. He was still scowling when he opened it. I asked him what was wrong, but he was in no mood to discuss it, intimating that it was none of my business. I told him it was my business when it affected the show and our guests. He could be rude to me, but not to our guests! Whereupon he told me I couldn’t dictate to him how to feel or act, and as far “as he was concerned he’d just as soon go home and never come back after tonight’s show. He closed the door. Stunned, I didn’t know what to do. I felt that this was in my lap and I didn’t want anyone else to know just yet what had happened, not even Joe. I had never been confrontational before—it’s just not in my makeup—but in this case I knew I had to be. ”

“So what did I do? I conjured up a character to play, a cross between Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford, women who weren’t afraid to speak up and be strong. Acting like them would give me the courage to stand up to Harvey. Okay. It was time to take the stage.
Friday, lunch break. In my dressing room, I called Harvey’s agent, Tony Fantozzi.
TONY: Hey, Carol! What’s up? ME: Harvey’s off the show after tonight. TONY: Whaa …? ME: He wants off the show, so I’m granting his wish. TONY: What’re ya talkin’ about? Does Joe know about this? ME: Not yet. He’s in the director’s booth. I’ll tell him after the show, but it won’t matter what anybody says or thinks. Harvey’s off the show. TONY: What about his contract? ME: If he wants off, I want him off. If there’s a problem, I’ll go to the union. TONY: Jeez … what did he do? ME: Tony, I don’t mind when he gets into one of his moods, but when he’s rude to our guests, I’m not gonna put up with it! I mean, how on earth can you be mean to Petula Clark and Tim Conway? It boggles “the mind! TONY: Have you told Harvey? ME: After we get through the show tonight. TONY: Jeez …
We got through the show that night. I don’t think anybody sensed the tension between Harvey and me. He was his usual professional self, but I was a total wreck.
Friday, after the show. I knock on Harvey’s dressing room door.
HARVEY: Come in.”

“He’s sitting at his makeup table. I sit down and look at him in the mirror.
ME: Well, you’ve got your wish. HARVEY: What’re you talking about?
He turns around to face me.
ME: You don’t have to come back anymore if you’re that unhappy. I called your agent and he’s aware of the situation. HARVEY: You called Fantozzi? ME: Yep. HARVEY: Well … I have a contract…. ME: That can be taken care of. You were rude to our guests and because of your behavior I was screwing up all over the place tonight during the show. I can’t work like that, so if you want off, you’re free to go.
I head for the door. He stops me. “ME: What? HARVEY: What can I do? ME: You asking for a reprieve? HARVEY: Sort of. Well, yes. ME: (pause) Okay, here’s what we do. This coming Monday, I want to see you cheerful.
He nods.
ME: Not only Monday, but the whole week! And you’re never, ever to be nasty to one of our guests or anyone on our crew. We all have moods, but we don’t bring them to work. Okay?
He nods again.
ME: In fact, it would tickle me pink to hear you whistling in the hall!
We shake hands.”

Carrie and Joe were in rehab at the same time--in fact, they were in the same facility, IIRC. (She wrote about it in the memoir about Carrie.)
It's interesting to read that she is perhaps a tougher lady than her public persona suggests, but not so surprising: she's lasted a long time in a very demanding, hyper-competitive business.
I met her once, briefly, coming out of a medical office building in Beverly Hills. She was EXACTLY as you would expect: warm, kind, accessible--and acted as if she were just as surprised and pleased to run into us as we were in encountering her.
One of her great strengths is her intuition about her audience: she knows that people are rooting for her, are one her side.
That she works hard to protect her image is a measure of the respect she has for fans.

She did write extensively about Joe and the girls and going out and socializing. None of joes kids from his first marriage has said anything bad in public about carol, but I did find it odd that she didn't say a word about being a stepmother to 8 kids that were a part of her life for 20 years.
She also writes about when carrie was in rehab the counselors encouraged the patients to smokeas a way of weaning off drugs. Also, she had been complaining to carol for months about her ongoing issues with swallowing and breathing and carol begging her to see a doctor. Carrie was living in a cabin in rural colorado and carol tried to get her to go up to Boulder to get checked out.

R78 you don't know the circumstances of Joe Hamilton's first marriage. Unless you are actually one of Joe's kids your opinion here is based on pure speculation and not to be taken seriously on any level.
Good day.

Still Joe Hamilton had eight fucking children, kind of like Frank Lloyd Wright had 10 or 12 children and dumped their mother, left her in poverty, took off with his mistress to Europe. Then one day when he was at work...architecting, his eldest son with him....his mistress and her children from FLW's backer (yes complicated) was burned in a deliberate fire at Taliessen. Turns out the fire was started by one of the imported Caribbean workers (who was married) and they had been going to a church damning FLW & his mistress at every service....
All INTERESTING stuff. The internet can't find what happened to the burner's wife though, with records.
FLW's kids WERE screwed up. FLW had left the wife without a dime to her name. In fact he had been deep in debt.

It doesn't matter, Carol was a bitch who by having an affair ENCOURAGED Joe to dump his kids and wife. Joe was at fault to, but him being wrong doesn't negate the fact that Carol by encouraging him was just as wrong.
In fact her daughter's suicide, yes it was, she covered it up with bullshit about cancer. No one dies that young form cigarettes. Anyway Carol drove her kid to suicide.

Dear idiot at R86, this one is for you
[quote]Burnett was born and raised in Mardela Springs, Maryland. She is the youngest daughter of Esther Margaret (née Stewart) and Kenneth King Burnett, a corporate attorney.[6][7] She attended St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware, graduating in 1994,[1] and returned in 2009 to deliver the commencement speech.[8][9] Burnett attended Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, where she studied political science and economics, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political economy. As an undergraduate, she played lacrosse and field hockey.[10][11]

Carol first husband was Don Saroyan, distant relative to Oscar winner William Saroyan.
Their marriage was a 'Star is Born' relationship.
Don was the big man on campus, while Carol was the supporting player
Once in New York, roles were reversed and Don never found any type of success.

Wow, how cruel are you, hiding behind the anonymity of the web? Carrie Hamilton most certainly did die of cancer. As for her age, Dana Reeve, Christopher Reeve's widow a non-smoker died of lung cancer at 45. Carrie was 38. I'm glad I don't know you.

"wasn't there a rumor CB was lebian? maybe with Julie?"
I heard Carol address that, far as I know this being the one time only she even indirectly spoke about it in public.
Her story was Julie Andrews was staying at some ritzy hotel. Carol visited her there. As they were standing in the hallway they see the elevator is stopping on their floor. Julie Andrews says something to the effect lets prank whoever that is, let's kiss. As they do the elevator door opens with Princess Margret and entourage.
I always figured HRH was added just for the punchline. But the story itself seemed a weak deflection for being caught in a careless moment.

Carol Burnett is a comedy hero of mine. "Torchy Lady" "The Little Foxies" "A Swiped Life", etc. Love her. This is the first time that I'm hearing extensively about her personal life - the "homewrecker" mess and so on and So what. That woman does not have one mean bone in her body. Maybe Joe's bone was mean sometimes because of the drinkin' but don't ever compare that bone with wait a second I forgot the point I was trying to make just let me take a deep refreshing drag from my Kent Golden Light and listen to the cubes clinkin' in my cocktail for a second here I'll find my thought

It was in MTM's book. There is no online link, go to a library lazy ass.
Did you notice how there are very few pics of MTM and Carol? Even though they have a lot of connections between them, like Dick Van Dyke etc.
All you have to do is look how Carol treated Vicki boycotting and badmouthing Mama's Family. She knew Vicki had virtually no talent and was trying to eke out a small but honorable living. But no Carol was even going to try to squash that.

I was excited when I found out MeTV was going to start re-running The Carol Burnett Show.
Maybe it was because they were showing the later seasons but it was not in the least bit funny. Painfully bad, actually. And I loved it as a kid.
Just hokey crap and they had fallen into those unfunny breaks in character with Korman/Conway that seemed so contrived.
I stopped watching. Didn't want to tarnish the memory of a show that was special to me when I was young.
But she did do some great stuff on that show. The old movie takeoffs and "As the Stomach Turns", etc. were wonderful.

I remember seeing Carol and Lucille Ball on either Dinah Shore or Dick Cavett's show in the '70s (they did a lot of talk shows together at the time) and Lucy mentioned Joe Hamilton's eleven children. They talked about how Carol and Joe always have some of Joe's children living with them at a time.
One of Joe's sons produced the first Carol Burnett Show reunion special after Joe died and I know another son was Carol's makeup man for years. The Hamilton children (at least some of them) were a part of her life.

I never understood why Dick Van Dyke agreed to come on the show after all his success. By the time he came on it had turned into one dog of a show. He seemed so out of place. Like he still cared to put on a professional show and the others, by this point, just didn't give a shit anymore.

It had been a long time since the Dick Van Dyke Show had gone off the air, his movie career was not exactly on fire, and he had two failed TV shows since his original went off the air (one a failed variety show). He probably saw it as a way to jump-start his career or at least get some consistent work.
