Why do fashion hipsters do this ?
It must be uncomfortable. It must be unhygienic. It doesn't look good.

Why don't you take some geritol and watch Lucy, OP. That should calm you down.

I only wear socks when I have to. I'm 62. I find "no socks" perfectly comfortable, and my feet smell much more after I take off a pair of socks than when I'm not wearing them.
The things some people find to cuntplain about.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 23, 2014 7:21 PM |
Those of us who lived through the 80s when topsiders with no socks were the fashion can confirm that sockless feet STINK.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 23, 2014 7:30 PM |
No socks with dress shoes looks dumber than douchebag dumb.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 23, 2014 7:34 PM |
Shoes with no socks almost always looks sexy as hell. Some nice slim or skinny fit jeans or chinos, maybe rolled slightly at the bottom, paired with some Vans Eras. Fucking so hot.
Sperry Topsiders -- always sockless. Wear the tiny super-low no-show socks if you must, but keep those ankles bare!
The stink is a turn-on as well, as long as the guy who's stinking is sexy overall.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 23, 2014 7:38 PM |
The only shoes I wear without socks are loafers, Topsiders, and sandals.
I have a friend who wears socks with Birkenstocks. Talk about douchey.

Who doesn't wear shoes with no socks sometimes? Topsiders. Deck shoes. Loafers. Let me phrase it differently? Who WEARS socks all the time? Douchey dorks, that's who.

Not that I'm really touchy about not wearing socks sometimes or anything!!!

To clean the insides of your shoes and prevent odors, get a bottle of Pawls Boutique Urine Remover from the dollar store. It has enzymes to break down body fluids, including sweat. It has a high percentage of hydrogen perioxide which disinfects as well. Spray, wipe and let dry for a day or two near a air outlet from the heating system.
It works GREAT as a laundry pre-spotter as well... removes blood and protein stains better than Shout and the similar products sold for that.

I have worn socks my whole life, usually fine wool or cotton because my feet sweat a lot. Well.... I just started wearing some of my shoes without socks, and to my amazement my feet seem to sweat less. I buy my shoes about 1/2 size larger and use washable insoles. I do dust my feet with powder, and just a little inside my shoes.

Anybody that wears shoes without socks is gross.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 8, 2014 9:31 PM |
Looks fine with casual clothing. I don't think it looks right with a suit etc. Also, I know darn well that feet are more likely to STINK if you're not wearing socks.
p.s. What's with the current look in magazines where the models look like they're wearing suits that a full size too small ? Stupid looking.

There are ankle socks, so people might be wearing socks, but you can't see it.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | October 5, 2014 11:08 PM |
Shoes (loafers, deck, or whatever) and no socks has been going on since the 1980's if not before. You'd see almost nothing but in the bars that catered to WASP/preppy gays (and those that were pretending to be) such as Uncle Charlie's.
Walk around the UES of Manhattan and it is almost de rigueur for both gay and straight males.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | October 5, 2014 11:08 PM |
Socks should be worn with shoes. I think wearing shoes without socks is very unhygienic and I don't like that look at all.
I also hated the fashion of about 15-20 years ago of wearing socks with sandals or socks with flip-flops.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | October 5, 2014 11:35 PM |
I ruined many shoes by not wearing socks. But like said earlier, they might be wearing ankle/low rise socks that you can't see.

by Anonymous | reply 74 | January 2, 2015 11:50 AM |
What R62 said. It shouts dirty and lazy, and there's nothing attractive about it. Many people don't take care of their feet or their skin and it's just nasty to look at. And when somebody is nicely dressed, and doesn't wear socks, it's just stupid looking.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 2, 2015 11:55 AM |
It looks so GAY. If your still hiding in the closet, you might want to reconsider your fashion statement, and keep those socks on.
If you don't believe me, just ask any of the women in your workplace.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 2, 2015 12:01 PM |
R68 is a touch too feminine for my taste. Why do some gays want to look girlie?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 2, 2015 12:05 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 2, 2015 3:02 PM |
I recently made a discovery. If you use crystal deodorant on your feet before putting them in your shoes, your feet won't stink at the end of the day (even if you don't wear socks). The key is to shower, then apply the crystal deodorant to your clean feet before putting on your shoes. It inhibits the bacteria that caused the smelliness. It may take several days of doing it before it really becomes effective, so give it time. The spray is probably the easiest to work with, but I use the solid most of the time--both are equally effective.

by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 11, 2015 8:25 PM |
They like extra stinky shoes. I think it's disgusting.
Also when I was a kid you could not try on shoes if you had no sock on. Stores would give out these things called Peds if the person were barefoot. These day they let anyone stick stinky, diseased, bare feet into shoes that someone else may have to buy and wear.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 11, 2015 8:30 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 86 | June 13, 2015 2:28 PM |
I think in the 80s it was called The Sock Controversy.
Socks with sandals or flip flops is about as disgusting as it gets.
And if you are above a certain age(32?) you should never wear sandals or flip flops in public and never go without socks.
Nobody wants to see your mis-colored veiny ankles.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | July 10, 2015 4:56 AM |
You can look like a hick if you're wearing dress pants and shoes w/out socks or worse white athletic socks. Shoes like topsiders or loafers worn with shorts or casual pants without socks are fine.

I like the look but most people will have stinky feet. On two occasions I have told people whom I was eating with that their feet, and they were wearing sandals in summer. If you have a good sense of smell you can notice it and while eating with the odor trapped under the table and wafting in my direction it was sickening.

by Anonymous | reply 109 | July 31, 2015 1:22 AM |
I think wearing no socks is disgusting! I have always wore socks with my shoes and if it's not considered fashionably "IN" I don't care.I used to constantly watch what was in and try to keep up with everything. When I was a teenager to my early 20s,I would wear super trendy clothes from Norstrom and Macy's and spend around 100 dollars a shirt ,and at the end of the year I would give my clothes to Goodwill because that was last year's look. It was nuts. I did love my clothes and I felt great ,but now I dress more for me, and I try to always look casual nice and well groomed. I never ever go anywhere without looking casual nice. However, the one thing I never have and I never will do is wear a T-shirt anywhere else but around my home. I like to look good ,and again, most importantly I dress for me. BTW, you don't have to spend a lot to look super you just have learn how to put things together. Hey if it looks good on you, great, if it doesn't look good on you, don't wear it. Just because it's "IN" doesn't mean one look is good for all. Fashion dictators want you to believe otherwise.
BTW, women not wearing pantyhose is just as disgusting and super tacky. Also, pantyhose makes lady's legs look great and their attire looks complete or finished when they wear pantyhose. I think it's completely gross they wear their shoes barefooted. A poster up above mentioned that people try shoes on now without socks and /or pantyhose, which is hygienically repulsive. Another person trying the same pair of shoes can get athlete's foot, bacteria, etc. I'm surprised the stores allow people to do that. I used to work at Ross department store and my manager always enforced the rule that their feet must be covered.
BTW, what is the look now with teenagers wearing long black socks with shorts? I see so many teenage guys on the street wearing that look.

I did it in my teens and early 20's when I was very slim (and good looking). I'm tall. People found it super sexy. It felt good because there was no weight on my feet, being young and light, and I had lux shoes, completely leather. They feel great on bare feet. Also no, it doesn't smell, if the shoes are high quality and not worn everyday. I would say its a a bit silly on anyone over 25.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | October 29, 2015 4:22 PM |
I admit I did not read all the responses. There is such a thing as a "sock" that covers your toes, goes under your foot and hooks around your heel, giving you the benefit of a sock without the appearance of a sock.

Someone said on IMBD.com Jonathan took his shoes off when he was on an air plain and his feet smelled so bad that the smell reached a large part of the plain and passengers were getting grossed out. The stewardess had to asked him to please put his shoes on and some socks.

Shoes and no socks is a classic on prep and college campuses for decades. It can be sexy on young men up to a certain age, say 25 or so. I did it all the time in college and going out dancing too. With high quality leather shoes, with leather soles, it feels great.

So many pictures posted in this thread and almost all of them are of men in suits and dress shoes with no socks. Ugh.
The reality is that yes, that look is queer and secondly the vast majority of sockless people are young men, either "hipsters", if anyone can accurately be called that anymore, or skaters. Or they're just preppies in boat shoes.
I am none of the above but I frequently wear shoes without socks. It just looks good. I'm 36 and my feet and ankles are sexy and not gross—no discolored veins. (Seriously, you're going to complain about seeing a man's ANKLES? Fuckin MARYs. Get a grip or get lost.)
Sure, they smell like ASS when I take off my Vans, but I'm into that and I don't give a fuck what anyone thinks of it.

I think it's cool with boat shoes or tennies, but it just looks silly with with leather shoes-and it will ruin them in short order.
Back in the 80s, thanks to that Don Johnson shitfest, I had to endure all those sockless Capezio jockeys laughing at their own jokes, flashing their business math calculators, and driving automobiles that weren't much more than monuments to epic bad taste. So glad I left busines school for a sane profession-I'd have gone postal on those fuckers eventually.
R161 has obviously never had the pleasure eating a meal while being treated to the sight of a collection of "casually dressed" diners, all with grimy ankles and filthy toes. Cover it the fuck up, you dirty hippies!
by Anonymous | reply 166 | April 23, 2016 8:01 AM |
R166, while I share your loathing for finance douchebags, that photo you've offered is just an athlete who got some mud on his calves. He's wearing socks. Not the same thing! It could happen to anyone, and who's to say he would go into a restaurant like that?
I've said it before: as long as the guy is hot, I LOVE stinky feet. Going sockless facilitates this. I love seeing the extra inches of ankle that one can see when a man isn't wearing socks. So risqué! It helps you imagine intimacy with the guy—getting close enough to smell that he hasn't washed in a while. Major turn-on.

There are such a things as no-show socks these days, so you can have the no sock look without the associated problem. But is that considered gauche among the hip and trendy.

R173 no I wear them during the summer months late May >September...they are also called loafer socks

Whenever I wear shoes with no socks when I pull my foot out of the shoe the bottom foam insert comes out with it. Then I have to put it back in the shoe and make sure its not bunched up. It's annoying. So I wear socks.
Back in the early 90's I wore these shoes called "eastlands", no one ever wore socks with them." The sloppy and rattier the "eastlands' looked was considered better. B.U.M. equipment and Champion sweat shirts were in. The girls had big hairspray bangs that stood straight up. You were considered to be the ultimate dork if you wore socks with sandals. I consider shoes with no socks to be kind of a 90's throwback look. It was kind of a preppy style.

I'm in Italy where men are absolutely paranoid about cleanliness. Shoes are worn with a removable insole that can be washed and dried. Plus sprays for the inside of the shoe are used. Socks are worn...but they're cut low...it only looks like men are wearing no socks but they are wearing them..

Ha, ha, looks at the twinks twisting in the wind when called out about their ridiculous obsession with fads like not wearing socks. You are just followers not trend setters little boys.
No amount of hot guys in pics is going to change that fact. And truth be told, unless you have unlimited funds, your shoes will wear out twice as fast from the sweat and oils on your feet. No they do not keep you cooler, that's what breathable socks do, they absorb the sweat or wick it away with new natural designed for sports clothes. Your feet will smell because the heat and moister will create fungus that you feed over and over every time you put on the shoe. Socks prevent the this from happening because you change them every day.
Its like trying to argue going commando in pants is more comfortable and cool except you wear the same pants for 2 years without washing them.

Sorry, it doesn't work that way. Your feet have the largest concentration of sweat glands on your entire body. Bacterial is what makes them smell. When you sweat its food for the bacterial along with the warm moist dark environment of the shoe. Once a bacterial culture starts to grow, it multiply exponentially. Taking your shoes off dose not kill the Petri Dish you walking in all day.

Wow, how have I missed this thread thus far? Speaking as a "young" (by DL standards, e.g. under 40) urbanite whose male friends, both gay *and* straight, dress well but rarely wear visible socks during warm-weather months:
1. Most of us *are* wearing socks: the low-cut variety that are usually invisible if worn correctly. We are not idiots: we realize shoes start to smell *very* quickly if there's no barrier between foot and shoe, plus socks are a necessity if one's shoes are relatively new, stiff and not yet fully broken in, unless you're a masochist who likes blistered ankles rubbed raw.
2. I can only assume the caftan-wearing queens turning up their nose at the concept have never visited Italy, where it has long been customary for men to go sockless (or at least appear so) in the summertime. But sure, feel free to criticize the most fashionable country on Earth for menswear as you use your Cheeto-crusted fingers to type and whine like a bunch of old ninnies.
3. The *actual* "hipster style" with respect to socks -- and, clearly, no one on DL knows anyone inside that demographic -- is to wear obnoxiously high tube socks, ones that cover all or nearly all of the calf. And yes, I'm talking about guys, not women (though they do it, too).

The trend, if it still alive, of skipping socks in the professional workplace, let alone with a business suit( crazy, usually) is ridiculous. People with power over you might not want to see men's ankles, let alone feel unhip for wearing socks in the workplace as has been done for a century.

I'm a big fan of the look AND the odor of not wearing socks with shoes, but only on other guys (sexy guys). I've been doing it myself for a few years and this year, I think I'm just about over it. Tired of the stench and having to wash my shoes in the washing machine and not being able to wear them until I wash them and let them air dry.
It's also just more difficult to get your feet clean in the shower after you've had them stuffed in filthy, stinking shoes loaded with dead cells and bacteria all day.
But if I come across a HOT guy who has stinky feet from not wearing socks, I will get a raging boner and fantasize about him rubbing his stinkfoot all over my face. Delicious.

Feet have a smell, period. Some feet smell worse than others. Medical conditions also contribute to foot odor.
Non-leather shoes also contribute to foot odors.
People wear socks with closed shoes to keep feet dry and to have the odor contained. Cotton socks, of course, are the best.

I've noticed over the past couple of years that there are now available tiny "no show" dress socks for men--not the thicker cotton athletic no show socks that have been around for like 20 years and seem to have past their time, but ones that are apparently meant to be worn with dress shoes to give the bare ankle look.
The racks at Marshall's are thick with them, which might mean they're not selling.

Most shoes aren't. I don't wear those without socks. You know, just because I don't wear socks with some shoes doesn't mean I never wear socks.

It has nothing to do with showing off ankles. It's not sexual. It's about comfort. That is all.
by Anonymous | reply 397 | December 25, 2017 4:35 PM |
Comfort ? I always like socks, even very thin socks on some shoes. My feet are way too sensitive to be paraded around naked!
by Anonymous | reply 398 | December 25, 2017 4:54 PM |
Then wear your socks, Prissette. What are you even doing in this thread?
by Anonymous | reply 399 | December 25, 2017 4:58 PM |
R2, your feet stink because your socks weren't natural fiber probably. Polyester traps moisture, allowing bacteria to grow. Cotton, wool or silk are the way to go.
by Anonymous | reply 401 | December 26, 2017 2:09 AM |
Definitely have to wear those "no-show" socks, but I like it when they show a bit, but stay well below the ankle, to show everyone you're careful not to be stinky.

This is still, 3+ years later, undoubtedly on OP's checklist of things to worry about.
It happens every day at 4 pm, after her half hour block of grocery store rages, including: Why are stupid people allowed to use self checkout? And: Who the fuck still writes a check?
She may come out for a drink tonight, but rest assured she will be making notes on who has socks and who does not. And you WILL be judged. Fear her withering gaze.

Women gave up wearing stockings years ago, and you never hear anyone complaining that their feet stink.
by Anonymous | reply 412 | January 27, 2018 11:51 PM |
Socks are archaic. No one with any style sense or a youthful attitude wears them still.

Only trashy people don't wear socks.
And hipsters with no taste wear blue/black pants with brown shoes, because apparently they're too dumb to match or too poor to afford the right pair.

Just spent a week in Manhattan, and was shocked to see most of the suits downtown going sockless with their expensive dress shoes. It just looks weird to me. Back in LA now with the shorts and black tube socks pulled all the way up paired with Nikes. Looks equally odd to me. To each his own.

They have little sockets that go under your feet to prevent moisture and odor.
by Anonymous | reply 489 | June 11, 2019 6:07 PM |
Sockless feet just stink. A LOT. All of you unhygienic queens yapping on about not wearing them all the time don't realize people can smell your rank feet. In college, I used to think I looked cute not wearing them but my feet and shoes stunk like hell. And they were always sweaty.
On that note, enough of all you old enough to drink in the 80s yapping on about topsiders and boat shoes sans socks being the trend back then. No one cares what a bunch of 50 and 60 years wore 3 decades ago.
This post is about attractive young urban men of 2019.
by Anonymous | reply 490 | June 11, 2019 6:12 PM |
Topsiders are the least sexy look ever. It says frosted hair tips and no sex. Give me an old leather/levis gay from the 80s, not some prissy tanned dude with his sweater tied round his shoulders.
by Anonymous | reply 491 | June 11, 2019 6:21 PM |
The things I do not care about, r490, are you, your ranting, or your footwear choices. Should you manage to die today, oh, well.

Yes, r491. Let's do leather. Here are your dinner bowl (L), and your toilet (R).
by Anonymous | reply 493 | June 11, 2019 6:35 PM |
Topsiders scream Republican douche. Like Southern 20-somethings who wear navy blazers with khaki pants like their dads and grandfathers.
by Anonymous | reply 494 | June 11, 2019 6:39 PM |
Ohhhh...more SJW bullshit. Now I get it. Thanks, r494.
by Anonymous | reply 495 | June 11, 2019 6:45 PM |
Wearing sneakers or topsiders with no socks looks great and appropriate. What I don't like are dress shoes with no socks, especially with suits. That just looks douchebaggy to me.
by Anonymous | reply 496 | June 11, 2019 6:50 PM |
R495 Oh Mary, calm down girl. I bet you rocked those sockless Topsiders in 1983 even though your feet stank.
by Anonymous | reply 497 | June 11, 2019 7:03 PM |
No socks is only appropriate when a man's in shorts and leisure footwear. No socks & dress shoes with long pants looks idiotic and lowbrow.
by Anonymous | reply 498 | June 11, 2019 7:08 PM |
Earlier than that, little justicina r497. Where did you get the idea Topsiders are an '80s exclusive?
by Anonymous | reply 499 | June 11, 2019 7:09 PM |
I like the no socks with shoes trend. It's kind of sexy actually
by Anonymous | reply 500 | June 11, 2019 7:44 PM |
Agree R500. Particularly with a slim cut suit and dress shoes. Not with formal wear. No socks with runners is not a trend, it's a common choice. Top siders are grandpa and young republican footwear. It says you have NO style.
by Anonymous | reply 501 | June 11, 2019 10:31 PM |
Agree with the Topsiders but don't let Grandpa at R499 hear you because she is mad. She's also R495 thinking you are pushing your SJW agenda on a post about no socks with shoes. LOL at her touchy self. If my sweaty feet were all stinky like my Topsiders I'd be mad too.
As for the slim cut and dress shoes - just no. Looks too feminine to me - like the ballerina shoes and legging trend popular a while back. Perhaps fitness models can get away with it on Instagram, but just no for 98% of the men out there.
by Anonymous | reply 502 | June 11, 2019 10:46 PM |
What about a man's ankle and pants and shoes are feminine? Crazy talk. Ballerina shoes and leggings make women look short, but that's up to them. A man without socks isn't feminine. Y'all wouldn't even notice if you didn't look. I don't fetishize bare ankles, especially not old white ones - but as a fashion choice it doesn't offend me.
by Anonymous | reply 503 | June 12, 2019 1:05 AM |
R503 It's not the ankles that's feminine. The dress shoes with no socks paired with slim and high cut pants looks feminine to me. All it conjures up for me are leggings and ballerina shoes. Or capri pants like my frumpy mom wears on vacation. Can't see past that.
it also doesn't help that where I am (SF) the only men who sport this look are shop bottoms on their way to work at Neiman Marcus or Bloomingales or whatever. Sashaying and slaying their way down the street, often with some sort of oversized handbag. Masculine guys, gay or straight, do not wear this here even in 2019.
Yeah, I am going off of a social construct of what a man should or should not be wearing, but that's me.
