Bad Movies We Love: Datalounge Edition

What are some movies you know are terrible, but you still enjoy watching them anyway?

For me, it's:

The Room

Cutthroat Island

Newsies

Shock Corridor

by Anonymousreply 228January 25, 2020 9:19 AM

The Blue Lagoon. Dumb, but my god the cinematography, the music, and two beautiful young people.

by Anonymousreply 1March 14, 2014 11:55 PM

OH NO, NYMPHOS.

by Anonymousreply 2March 14, 2014 11:56 PM

MAME.

Yeah, the Lucy one. And I don't even like her TV shows. But she reminds me of my mom in that movie, and Robert Preston is in it.

by Anonymousreply 3March 14, 2014 11:58 PM

Dune, but before they screwed it up to make it more understandable to those who had not read the book. I usually turn it on after that prequel crap is over with.

by Anonymousreply 4March 14, 2014 11:59 PM

The Last American Virgin

by Anonymousreply 5March 15, 2014 12:02 AM

Romeo is Bleeding

Lena Olin and Gary Oldman were so good in this bad, bad movie; yet is was Juliette Lewis who stole the show!

by Anonymousreply 6March 15, 2014 12:06 AM

The Pirate Movie

by Anonymousreply 7March 15, 2014 12:06 AM

Speed

by Anonymousreply 8March 15, 2014 12:06 AM

Really obscure, but "Prelude to Happiness" is a 1970s soap-opera style drama about an amputee's search for love. It's played completely straight, not for camp, and it is AMAZING.

I wish more people knew about this one. It's Datalounge catnip.

Shock Corridor and Speed were and are critically acclaimed films, so don't belong on this list.

by Anonymousreply 10March 15, 2014 12:09 AM

Every Michelle Pfieffer movie.

I love that coked up slut.

by Anonymousreply 11March 15, 2014 12:10 AM

"Little Darlings". If nothing else but for Matt Dillon's washboard abs and treasure trail.

And let's not forget Armand Assante. Woof!

by Anonymousreply 12March 15, 2014 12:10 AM

R7 I haven't thought about that in years!

Clue is my #1 cinematic guilty pleasure

by Anonymousreply 13March 15, 2014 12:13 AM

[italic]Airport[/italic] (1970) - Beginning "masterpiece" of the disaster-themed film decade of the 1970s.

by Anonymousreply 14March 15, 2014 12:18 AM

I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can

Riding The Bus With My Sister

by Anonymousreply 15March 15, 2014 12:23 AM

Well, Mommie Dearest is my favorite film ever. I don't consider it an objectively bad movie but most of the world sees that way, so I guess it counts.

Lots of campy 70s/80s stuff...Midnight Madness, Strange Brew, Rock N'Roll High School, Just One of the Guys, etc.

by Anonymousreply 16March 15, 2014 12:26 AM

Mommie Dearest

Copycat: it's just really fun and kind of clever

by Anonymousreply 17March 15, 2014 12:38 AM

Waterworld Road House Commando

If you look at these movies as comedies, they're pure 100% entertainment.

by Anonymousreply 18March 15, 2014 12:39 AM

"Midnight Express" was highly-acclaimed, R16 .

It was nominated for a "Best Picture" Oscar, with other nominations resulting in wins.

Sorry, I'm just being perfunctorily bitchy, which always earns an honorable mention here on DL.

by Anonymousreply 19March 15, 2014 12:40 AM

Get glasses r19, r16 typed "Midnight Madness."

by Anonymousreply 20March 15, 2014 12:42 AM

Oops, my bad.

by Anonymousreply 21March 15, 2014 12:46 AM

Night of the Living Dead & both Dawn of the Dead movies.

Xanadu (seriously!)

Earthquake & The Towering Inferno

Dead Ringer

Berserk

by Anonymousreply 22March 15, 2014 12:46 AM

Cabin Boy is a fun movie, and I also like Ishtar.

by Anonymousreply 23March 15, 2014 12:48 AM

The Poseidon Adventure.

Xanadu.

Bless The Child.

by Anonymousreply 24March 15, 2014 12:49 AM

I agree about "Ishtar", R23. It was so bad that I couldn't help but love it.

I suppose that Isabelle Adjani (a brilliant actress, IMHO) thought, "Why not? I'll get my name out there to a major American audience!)

Little did she know.

by Anonymousreply 25March 15, 2014 12:51 AM

I actually like "Shock Treatment", the bastard sequel to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

by Anonymousreply 26March 15, 2014 12:52 AM

"The Hotel New Hampshire"

by Anonymousreply 27March 15, 2014 12:52 AM

Just Friends

by Anonymousreply 28March 15, 2014 12:56 AM

All the chatter about the budget guaranteed that it would be dead on arrival R25.

Ebert once said that if they had camped it up and filmed it on a soundstage with painted backdrops and rented camels (like one of the Hope/Crosby road pictures), it would have been considered a very funny film, and I think he's exactly right.

by Anonymousreply 29March 15, 2014 12:57 AM

Speaking of The Hotel New Hampshire, is John Irving bi?

Grease 2

by Anonymousreply 38March 15, 2014 4:21 AM

Any 60s Japanese monster movie, but especially "War Of The Gargantuas", featuring this chart-topper by Carol Burnett's sister-in-law:

Making Love. Michael Ontkean had made a movie with homosexual overtones, before. But, Harry Hamlin didn't. So I was knocked over, when they kissed passionately.

by Anonymousreply 43March 15, 2014 4:52 AM

Poison Ivy, Basic Instinct

by Anonymousreply 44March 15, 2014 4:52 AM

by Anonymousreply 49March 15, 2014 5:32 AM

Pretty much any Queen Latifah comedy. She makes just about anything watchable.

by Anonymousreply 51March 15, 2014 6:27 AM

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - I am drawn to it like a bad accident, powerless to avert my gaze.

The Ten Commandments: Oh, Moses, Moses, you stubborn, splendid, adorable fool!

Where Angels Go ... Trouble Follows! - I can't remember how many times I have watched all or most of this when it pops up on TV. I'd watch it right now.

I just downloaded Xanadu in HD! It hasn't been released on Bluray, it must be an hdtv rip. I remember liking the music and effects, but the story/dialogue is terrible. I'm sure all the production numbers are pretty good, though, it's some of Olivia's best music.

Black Swan

by Anonymousreply 57March 15, 2014 9:44 AM

Yes, R56! "Xanadu" had some awful acting, but some of the best music. And the set of this movie was where two beautiful people, ONJ and Matt Lattanzi met, later got married, and produced a somewhat cute daughter who absolutely ruined her looks with plastic surgery.

"Belles on Their Toes" the sequel to the original "Cheaper by the Dozen."

Some horrible musical numbers to justify the presence of Deborah Paget, who plays one of the daughters, including a wonderfully racist "Japanese Sandman." Plus a musical tribute to baked beans!

The beauty of the young Jeffrey Hunter as a doctor who dates the oldest daughter makes up for it.

The only bad movie I've ever liked is ST. ELMO'S FIRE. It has that stirring David Foster theme, Rob Lowe's faux saxing, Jules' nervous breakdown, the new word (to me at that time) "stepmonster," the silliness with Dale Biberman and Kirby, wondering whether Kevin was really in love with Alec, the wonderfully cheeseball end scene with Billy leaving town, and that stirring David Foster theme once again.

Oh, and best of all, it was shot in DC, where I lived, not that long after my own graduation from college. Loved the Georgetown and Adams-Morgan location shooting.

Funny this came up, I just decided to watch "Cobra" on Amazon Prime. Starring (and written by) Slyvester Stallone with Brigitte Nielsen as a retarded model being stalked by a gang of serial killers. The entire movie is a wreck and I love it.

I'll probably kill the thread with these but here goes:

Chained Heat

Purple Rain

Foxy Brown

by Anonymousreply 77March 15, 2014 6:42 PM

I still remember that fight in Foxy Brown between Pam Grier and a hooker. I think there was some very unconvincing stunt doubling going on.

Michael Ontkean made a movie with Paul Newman. Skating was featured. It was so long ago, I forgot the details. But I remember Ontkean was somewhat daring.

by Anonymousreply 81March 15, 2014 8:16 PM

"Slap Shot" (1977), starred Paul Newman, with Michael Ontkean.

by Anonymousreply 82March 15, 2014 8:21 PM

People probably think Sister Act 2 is a bad movie or a disappointment but I love to watch it.

by Anonymousreply 83March 15, 2014 8:24 PM

Even as far back as 1963, Paul Newman was having fun with us. In "The Prize", he uttered a line similar to, "If anyone touches me, I'll scream!" while he was nude, and clutching a prop.

R90, I watch Color of Night Uncut at least once a year...usually when I'm down and need a good hard laugh. Jane March's teeth (which kinda spoiled the ending) and Bruce Willis' cock make this movie a classic for me.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture after a hit of pure LSD-25. I know from experience that it makes all those constant, incredibly long scenes of special effects orgasms and sweeping music an experience I cannot describe in words.

by Anonymousreply 97March 15, 2014 10:09 PM

""Slap Shot" (1977), starred Paul Newman, with Michael Onktean"

That's not a bad-movie-we-love, that's a genuinely good movie! It's a wonderfully gritty black comedy, it's so real and funny it ought to be considered a classic. If it were better known, it might be.

As for a bad movie we love, how about the most insane movie musical of the 1940s, "Ziegfeld Follies"? Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly dance together! Lucille Ball whips girls dressed as black cats! Kathryn Grayson walks through masses of soap bubbles! No, really.

by Anonymousreply 122March 16, 2014 7:56 AM

Cheesy, 1980's action movies are the best "bad movies" because they were so homoerotic! Think of the climax-fight in "Commando" between Schwarzenegger & Bennett! When Ah-nold challenged Bennett to a knife fight he said something like "Why don't you stick it in me, Bennett, and twist it? Look in my eyes, see what's going on in there?" If that's not a gay come-on I don't what is. And Bennett had a squealing orgasm and chased after Ah-nold with his knife, practically jizzing his chain-mail pants. I challenge anyone to name me a more Freudian-homosexual action movie than Commando.

[R128]/[R133] I remember how hot that the serial killer was in that movie..... (I also remember sneaking downstairs to catch it on late night ON-TV (anyone remember that service?) I had the naked bits timed in my head for some teen private time...god I wish I had pause back then!

Lost Horizon-the 1973 version that killed the Burt Bacharach/Hal David partnership. Sally Kellerman and Liv Ullman singing. Olivia Hussey looking pregnant, then not from one moment to the next!

Playing By Heart-Jon Stewart is an architect, Ryan Phillipe is moody, Angelina Jolie is dramatic, and Dennis Quaid is just weird.

There are two thrillers called The Fan - one with Robert DeNiro and another with Lauren Bacall. They are BOTH campy and fun.

"Slap Shot is notoriously homophobic."

Well... there's a lot of homophobic language in the movie, all of it delivered by bone-ignorant morons, as a way of showing how tiny and unsophisticated their minds are. If that offends you, the movie is not for you.

I love that movie, though. It looks at the dark side of life in a very hilarious way.

Count me in with r146. It's funny how our definition of a liberal has changed since the 70s/80s. A true liberal, as far as I'm concerned, would have the brains and sophistication to distinguish between films that portray narrow, homophobic characters, and those that (implicitly or explicitly) encourage homophobia to some degree. Slap Shot (and most of the films we are discussing here) belong in the former group; Braveheart belongs in the latter. Libertarians aren't wrong when they say that the left has become more narrow minded - certainly culturally, this is true. I have far more respect for the laissez faire lefties of yore than the so-called liberals of today, who are rightly called out as the "thought police."

Then again, our whole culture was just far more laissez faire then. Everyone is just too damn uptight today about everything. Slap Shot is a great movie with one of Paul Newman's best performances. But Hollywood, and even most of the indie companies, would be too timid to make something like that today.

Reminds me of the commentary for Vacation, where the late Harold Ramis says that, if he made the movie today, he would have never included the East St. Louis scene because it would have been considered "too offensive." Exhibit A why there are so few truly funny comedies these days. That was only one of the funniest scenes in the movie.

This really ghetto movie named "Killjoy" and its sequel "Killjoy 2". I rented both movies without hearing anything about them, and they were both really freaking ghetto and unintentionally hilarious. It was like "It" combined with "Boyz in da hood" or something along those lines. Really pathetically hilarious.

Love, love, -LOVE- NIGHT OF THE COMET, R153! Also NIGHT OF THE CREEPS!

by Anonymousreply 155March 22, 2014 1:28 AM

The Legend of Lyla Claire is the worst film ever made. It's so bad it's genius. Kim Novack plays two identical roles. And neither one of them can act. Peter Finch, Coral Browne as a crippled Hedda Hopper, and Ernest Borgnine as the lowest rent tycoon ever cast in a movie. Even his Rolls is crap. And Kim dies in the end. Twice!

R153

"Metalstorm:The Destruction Of Jared-Syn"

"Xtro"

"Beastmaster"

Cannon's Albert Pyun's "Captain America"

"The Keep" - Tangerine Dream soundtrack, but soporific.

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" isn't a bad movie, nor does it aim to be consrquential. Harmless entertaonment, and it's a great time capsule.

"The Last American Virgin" somewhat praised, but what drek.

"The Lonely Lady"

"Vampire In Brooklyn" - shameful.

by Anonymousreply 159March 22, 2014 3:02 AM

"Looker" ......with Albert Finney as the 'studly' cosmetic surgery who 'fixes all the girls that are perfect', Susan Dey as a supermodel (HA), beautiful girls who cannot act and James Coburn and Leigh Taylor Young as the 'bad guys' who die stupidly. Also there's the silent Marlboro Hit Man'.

But once again .......it has a really catchy soundtrack !!

I never get tired of watching the underrated "Alien Resurrection." Because Jean-Pierre Jeunet's visual style is so whacky, tripped-out and deliriously unpredictable, it gives this movie a uniquely nutty, delirious vibe that the other Alien movies didn't have. Plus, at the time Sigourney Weaver was the hottest-looking 50-year-old dressed in tight leather this bisexual has ever seen. Before or since.

by Anonymousreply 178March 24, 2014 8:19 AM

R146, thanks for posting that. Slap Shot is a more a character study than a sports film per se, and also focuses on life in a blue collar environment. It's not a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination. It's a rare sports movie that shows the effect of violence but not in a ham-fisted way.

Plus Swoosie Kurtz is hilarious (the way she looks around and optimistically says 'good crowd!' cracks me up every time) and I love the Hanson brothers. 'I'm listening to the fucking song!'

Plus the editing is fantastic in a very 70s, rhythmic way.

by Anonymousreply 182March 31, 2014 12:46 AM

Bad movies I love to never watch but they are classic bad - Connie Francis showcases, WHERE THE BOYS ARE and FOLLOW THE BOYS.

I agree with R91 - I'll watch any Mystery Science Theater 3000 bad flicks with their good riffs. A particularly bad one that I love is ATTACK OF THE THE EYE CREATURES. The continuity is so bad throughout. The film makers clearly "just didn't care."

I agree R96 - some films are just so bad even the funny riffing doesn't help.

I loved the fact that the MST3K writers had a serious code; any truly classically bad film was off limits. Thus, they never featured PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE or it's ilk.

TERROR OF TINY TOWN is really painful to watch in a mesmerizing train wreck sort of way.

Orphan is great, R186. I had no interest in seeing it until someone told me the twist at the end, and it was amazing.

I've never seen it stoned, but I have a feeling it would be a real riot.
