Actors who hated each other so much that it constantly disrupted filming
Film or TV -- actors whose dislike for each other interfered with the production. For instance, they would only speak to each other in scenes or they would refuse to film scenes together and it would have to be cut together in post. Anything like that.
Please share stories.

As usual for her later years, Bette Davis hated everyone on the set of "The Whales of August" and made everyone's life miserable. However, when she want launch into one of her rants, sweet little old Lillian Gish would just turn her hearing aid off, infuriating Davis all the more. But Davis still managed to score off Gish on the set:
LINDSAY ANDERSON (the director): "Miss Gish, you've just given us the marvelous close-up!"
BETTE DAVIS: "She should have! She was around when they invented them!"
Gish did not say one bad word about Davis during the filming until it was all over and she was interviewed for 'People.' They asked her what she thought of the behavior of Davis (who had had a terrible stroke a few years before and had partial facial paralysis for the rest of her life), and Gish replied, "That face! Have you seen her face? What a tragic face!"

Everyone on the set of SNL loathed Chevy Chase the first year when he was the break-out star (he is a notorious asshole). He came back the 2nd year as guest host and during rehearsal said something offensive to Jane Curtin, and as a result he and Bill Murray (who had a crush on Curtin) got into a fist fight.

Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Longstanding feud supposedly started with Joan making a pass at Bette in the early years of their careers.
Supposedly culminated on the set of Baby Jane with Bette having a Coca-Cola machine installed (Joans deceased husband was a high ranking Pepsi employee and Joan was on the board) and Joan having lead weights sewn in her wardrobe for the scene where Bette drags her, supposedly causing Bette to hurt her back.
While I'm pretty sure alot of this is exaggerated, it seems like there would be animosity between these two, as Joan was stricken with an inferiority complex and I think Bette knew this, and while she was the more well-adjusted of the two, she could be pretty spiteful.

Peter Sellers and Orson Welles hated each other so much when they were filming Casino Royale that they filmed some of their mutual scenes separately and then they were edited to make it look like they were in the room together.
And Brando made director Frank Oz' life a living hell on the set of The Score and refused to shoot scenes unless Oz spoke in his Miss Piggy voice when directing. De Niro directed some of the scenes with Brando instead of Oz.

Ironically, the entire female case of 90210 also hated Tiffany Amber-Thiessen. Jenny Garth became best friends with her after the show ended (Tori was also a friend of Tiffany's), but Tiffany ended up ending the friendship with Jenny, for some reason (Tiffany says she was the wronged one). R36 That one's a clsssic. But I think Faye's diva attitude and laziness was a bigger problem than the hatred for her co-stars. I always start laughing when I read this piece of trivia:
[quote] According to the actor/stuntman Ernie F. Orsatti, Faye Dunaway was often late to the set or didn't appear at all. This made some scenes impossible to film and caused other actors such as William Holden and Jennifer Jones to become quite upset. William Holden reportedly shoved Faye against the wall one day and threatened her. For the next month, she had a perfect attendance record.

As for that Lois Nettleton/Pia Zadora feud, they got into a knock-down drag-out fight which, at one point featured Nettleton in a headlock. Scissored by Zadora's stubby legs, while Zadora screamed, "Bite me!". Nettleton did just that, biting through a dress, control top panty hose and panties to the moist snack cake beneath.

R63, Dustin was awful towards Meryl. In their first scene together, Meryl's character is supposed to have an emotional breakdown as she tells Dustin's character that she's leaving him and the kid. As Meryl was getting into character, out of the blue Dustin slapped her hard in the face. She was so pissed that when she did the scene, it perfectly captured her character's feelings for him.
Then in the explosive restaurant scene, Dustin had told the cameraman that he was going to throw a wineglass at the wall, so be ready for it. He neglected to tell Meryl though, so when he threw that glass, she was visibly shaken. Meryl played out the scene, but when it was over, she ripped into him, screaming profanities. The Joss-Charisma feud started when Joss kept forcing her to dye and cut her hair in unflattering styles (hence the horrible bleached blonde do she got stuck with in season 3/4, done solely because of the Angel/Cordelia romance storyline, his reasoning was the Angel 'only fell for blondes'.)
Joss then also held an intervention with the cast and crew for Charisma when she had a mild drinking problem. He blew it out of proportion and railed the whole cast to confront her about it. They then wrote Charisma out for a couple of episodes in season 3 so she could 'go to rehab'. Charisma never had much of a problem and she secretly hated him for that, in what was basically a power game as opposed to Joss really giving a shit about her health. Then she got pregnant and all hell broke loose and she ended up fired.

r46, I think the animosity was completely one-sided on Curtis's side filming SLIH. Marilyn was an emotional wreck who necessitated dozens of takes for simple lines like "It's me, Sugar." It drove Curtis -- who got it right on the first or second take -- crazy. But I never heard that Marilyn took it personally.
How about Sharon Stone and Billy Baldwin in Sliver? They hated each other so much that they had to change the blocking of the sex scenes so that the two of them didn't have to kiss or even face each other.

R101, Heigl also butted heads with showrunner Shonda Rhimes. For the fourth season -- after Heigl's Emmy win and hit film KNOCKED UP -- she asked to reduce her time on the show so she could concentrate on other endeavors. Thus, her character was underwritten that season. But then she bitched about it to the press and even made an announcement about taking her name off Emmy consideration because she thought the writing for her character was not up to par. Naturally, this pissed of Rhimes, who thought she was accommodating her, and earned Heigl a reputation as a "bitch" and "diva."

No surprise, but Mandy Patinkin and everyone but especially Thomas Gibson since they did two series together.
When they were on Criminal Minds, the producers had to resort to stand-ins for most of their scenes together since Gibson refused to work with Patinkin as Patinkin was such a horse's ass. There are a lot of scenes when they're talking and the camera is placed behind one of the stand-ins while the other actor talks. Apparently, Gibson didn't have a problem if there were more people in the scene. Just no one on one with Patinkin.

Kate Jackson treated Cheryl Ladd horribly on Charlie's Angels but she was also a pain to Bruce Boxleinter on Scarecrow and Mrs.King. It was thought that Cindy Williams was the trouble maker on Laverne and Shirley but Gary Marshall said his sister Penny was the real problem. Erin Moran said in a radio interview years ago she never cared for Henry Winkler on Happy Days. He seemed like an ego maniac. And the feud between Suzanne Somers and Joyce DeWitt lasted over 30 years from Three's Company. Raymond Bailey on The Beverly Hillbillies was despised by the whole cast. Patrick Duffy admitted in an interview a few years ago most of the cast of Dallas was close except for Victoria Principal. Not a surprise since she seemed like a bitch to work with. Barbara Eden admitted Larry Hagman was no picnic on I Dream of Jeannie. Agnes Moorehead only got along with Elizabeth Montgomery on Bewitched.

The Vance/Frawley distain was right up there with Crawford and Davis. Supposedly, she used to nervously scan through the next weeks script to see if there was a kissing scene. He seemed like a guy who just didn't like women. A life long bachelor, he supported his female relatives but his real love was going to the fights and drinking. Dezi Arnaz almost didn't hire him because of his reputation. Thankfully he did. Also, Herbert Ross was known to be very difficult after the death of his wife Nora Kaye.

The person who mentioned "Gilmore Girls" upthread was right. Graham wanted the show to break up Luke and Lorelai for the final season so she didn't have to work with him, and apparently she barely agreed to even kiss him in the final seconds of the show when they "reunite."
You could tell in the show when the shift occurred, because characters started doing strange things just to explain this weird tension.
Patterson isn't a great actor but as Luke, he was always able to act as though he liked Lorelai. Graham couldn't pull it off.

Julia Roberts disrupted the filming of Hook because of her heroin addiction. Spielberg never forgave her for that. She also had a terrible relationship with Nick Nolte on the set of the dreadful "I Love Trouble", actually using stand ins when possible to avoid contact. Never heard of her having problems with Denzel (and her behaviour at the Oscars when he won for Training Day undermines that theory).
Tom Hardy and Shia La Beouf actually had a fist fight on the set of Lawless. Charlize was also less than impressed with Tom on the new Ma Max film.
Sharon Stone bit Billy Baldwin's tongue during a love scene in Sliver, because she hated him so much. Understandable.

Mike Nichols fired Mandy Patinkin from Heartburn and replaced him with Jack Nicholson after just two days of shooting. Officially there were the usual "creative differences" and a "lack of chemistry" with co-star Meryl Streep. People on the set said that what really happened was that after each take, Patinkin would start giving Streep notes on her performance and neither Streep nor Nichols would tolerate it.

Virginia Cherrill, a socialite turned starlet, was the only one of Charlie Chaplin's leading ladies during his Little Tramp years with whom he never had sex. Initially entranced by her beauty, Chaplin cast her as the blind girl in City Lights. He grew to loathe Cherrill, and what he took to be her cavalier attitude to acting. In her defense, Chaplin routinely kept the cast and crew waiting around for hours and even for days while he sought inspiration.
When Virginia asked to be released early one afternoon to get her hair done for a social event that evening, Chaplin blew his stack and fired her. He replaced her with Georgia Hale, his co-star in The Gold Rush. But his financial advisers informed Chaplin that he could not afford to re-shoot the film and there was no way to finish it unless he re-hired Cherrill.
So Chaplin was forced to go to her with his tail between his legs and charm her back into the movie. She took the good advice of her friend Marion Davies and demanded that Chaplin double her weekly pay, reminding him that he had nullified the terms of their original contract when he fired her. A notorious cheapskate, Chaplin was outraged but he had no choice.

What's the real story behind Olivier and Hoffman on Marathon Man? Everyone's heard about Olivier asking Hoffman why he didn't try acting, but I was reading recently that Hoffman was actually a complete shit to Olivier, who was frail at the time, and John Schlesinger was quite upset by this. I was watching Hoffman on Inside the Actors Studio and he was talking about Olivier as though they were great friends but his emotion seemed decidedly fake. What gives?

The one instance that comes immediately to mind of a shoot being completely disrupted by actors' hatred of each other is Paul Schrader's Blue Collar. The three main actors - Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel and Yaphet Kotto - all hated each others guts and refused to speak to each other. There are some dialogue scenes in the film where the actors are talking to stand-ins or no one at all. Harvey Keitel would require a few takes to warm up in a scene, whereas Richard Pryor would be full of energy and invention for about three takes and then he would burn out, so Schrader had to use a stand-in for Pryor for three takes, get Keitel warmed up and then bring Pryor in. He would have to shoot scenes in basic two or three-shots and get the take as quickly as possible because he never knew if any of them would walk off the set and refuse to continue. Richard Pryor actually pulled a gun on Schrader and threatened to shoot him if he demanded that he do more than three takes. There's a famous shot about halfway through the film where the characters decide to do a robbery. It's a static three-shot; all three actors sitting beside each other on a sofa staring ahead just over the camera. It was the last scene they shot, so none of the actors were talking to each other. They did it in one take. Afterwards Pryor got up, walked off the set, drove to the airport and that was that. Schrader's audio commentary on the film's DVD is priceless and is a great lesson in how a director has to accommodate actors on a shoot.

r42, Judy Davis wasn't "very nasty" to River Phoenix during the Dark Blood shoot. She actually had a famously contentious working relationship with the director, George Sluizer, who to be fair was an ego-stuffed, sexist, stubborn, control freak who treated her execrably. They loathed each other.
Phoenix was upset by the conflict between Davis and Sluizer and was also hurt that Davis wasn't warm and didn't fawn over him the way other actors usually did. Jonathan Pryce and Phoenix had bonded with Sluizer off set, spending every evening together having dinner and talking for hours, and they sided with Sluizer against Davis.
When the production moved to Los Angeles, Phoenix spent days on a drug binge with his city friends. On the day shooting resumed, he showed up noticeably under the influence. That night he took more drugs at his hotel, added lots more drugs in a club, and died of a massive overdose. Nothing to do with Judy Davis at all.

I realize we're in the age of celebrities, but they used to recast roles all the time (at least in soaps).
I can't even remember the last time they simply recast a role, rather than writing the character out of the show.
Dynasty seems like the last time - with both Fallon and Steven Carrington.
Are there any more recent (other than daytime soaps or "reboots" like Spiderman or quickly aging the child actor) instances of simply recasting the actor on an established show?

"Game of Thrones" has recast a few actors in mid-show, R141. Sometimes it was because an actor wasn't really working in a role (Dario), sometimes because there's a small ongoing role and the actors get better offers (three guys have played "The Mountain").
And then there's the boy king Tommen, who was eight or ten when he took the throne in the books, and who was immediately hustled into marrying an adult woman for political reasons. Of course things like that really happened in the middle ages, an adult Plantagenet king married a seven-year-old girl for chrissakes, but the showrunners backed off and brought in a young-looking seventeen year old to play the boy king. Of course now some Dataloungers are in love with him.

R59 asked what was Larry Hagman's problem with Donna Reed, anyway? From what I've read over the years, Larry didn't have anything personal against Donna. Rather, he was upset with Philip Capice, the executive producer who took over for Leonard Katzman after Patrick Duffy left. Larry was infuriated the season that Donna Reed was on because of the direction in which Capice took the story lines. Capice only lasted the year and Hagman got Katzman and Duffy to come back. Donna Reed was collateral damage in the shake up because Hagman convinced Barbara Bel Geddes to come back. Hagman didn't care for Reed's portrayal, but to be fair, she never really seemed like the character. Poor Donna Reed did get treated like dirt in all this. I've read she found out she was fired from a TV or radio report.
What's funny about all this is that the show was already starting its decline. It was the next season when Victoria Principal left that sealed the fate of the show. Pam and Bobby were the heart and soul of the show. Hagman was the superstar villain the audience loved to hate, but it was balanced by Pam and Bobby as the couple everyone rooted for. When Victoria left, that was taken away and the show slowly fell apart.

Apparently, Victoria Principal's exit from Dallas pissed off a lot of the cast, but can you really blame her for leaving? She'd been playing Pam Ewing for nine consecutive years. That's a hell of a long time for an actor to play the same character. I wouldn't be surprised if Victoria was getting bored being on the show, and felt that there were no more storylines for the character. Basically everything that could be done with Pam had been done, so why stick around? It seemed like a sensible thing to do - time to pack it in and leave.

All three kids were mere walk-on roles. They'd enter, say a few lines, and then depart. Very rarely did an episode revolved around them, especially as the series progressed.
That was my beef with the show. It didn't know how to incorporate the kids into the storylines, and for a show about a nanny, that's not a good thing. The show quickly became about Fran and Mr. Sheffield's will-they-or-won't-they relationship, with C.C. as Fran's archnemesis and Niles as her trusted confidante. Heck, Fran's mom and grandmother got more screen time and storylines than the kids.

R160, yes, Victoria simply felt like the character had run its course and there was nothing left for her to portray. Pam started out as a feisty, independent-minded woman. But as JR got more evil, the writers felt they had to balance it by making Pam and Bobby into saints. Victoria got bored with playing Saint Pam.
Victoria had actually told the producers she planned to leave two seasons before she actually did. I believe she told them at the end of the season where Bobby died. She said she planned to leave the show at the end of the 87-88 season. They didn't take her seriously and thought she was angling for more money. They were actually surprised when she followed through, even more so because she stuck to her decision after they had thrown a huge amount of money at her. But she was already making money with her business ventures by then and didn't need the salary from Dallas anymore.
All involved in the show knew it was a big loss, but I think they felt the show could go on without her. I think they underestimated what balance her character provided. At the end of the following season, the producers decided not to renew Linda Gray's contract and the show's fate was sealed. It was a precipitous drop after that, and it was already rolling downhill.

I'm pretty sure Archie Panjabi worked at the company where I did my work experience whilst at school in the late-'90s. It was a small Asian TV production company. She was the first person to welcome me and show me round on my first day there. It didn't disrupt filming and I'm not sure if it was a mutual dislike but left-winger Tim Roth spoke in interviews about how much he despised Charlton Heston, who he had a scene with in the Planet of the Apes remake, calling him a monster because of his involvement with the NRA. He said he nearly didn't turn up to the set (Roth not Heston) and that he was glad they were both in full ape makeup so they weren't actually touching each other.

Speaking of Kim Novak, she had a major fued with with veteran director Henry Hathaway on the first few days of shooting the 1963 remake of OF HUMAN BONDAGE. Hathaway quit - which delayed filming - and was replaced by British director Ken Hughes. In the end Hughes couldn't stand Novak either, but completed the film. Novak also didn't get along with co-star Laurence Harvey. He's no prince either.
The movie was dreadful anyway, and a flop. Not since her dire attempt to play Jeanne Eagels had Novak been so far in over her head.

Speaking of Kim Novak: she was already having trouble with her new marriage when she began filming '13' in 1965. Supposedly she was a complete pain in the ass and not her nicest. The movie was almost finished filming when Kim hurt her back after falling from a horse. Rather than waiting for her to recuperate the producer used the accident as a reason to scrap the footage, replace her with Deborah Kerr and reshoot the movie with a new title: THE EYE OF THE DEVIL.

Elizabeth Taylor didn't want to make BUtterfield 8 but she owed M.G.M. one more film before she could make CLEOPATRA which was going to earn her 1 million dollars. Taylor was very difficult in the beginning of the shoot; kept crew waiting for hours, would say things just to shock, ignored direction.
Director Daniel Mann gave it right back to her. One day after repeated latenesses on her part he told Taylor that she would be needed on set by 8 am the following day. Taylor replied for all to hear, "that's not possible; Eddie & I like to fuck all morning long." Not to be outdone, Mann responded, "That's great. We'll bring the crew over to your hotel and shoot right in your suite. It'll add realism to the film !." Another time on the set he gave her the following direction while she was shooting a shower scene: " I want to look like you're fucking the faucet, that's the look I want !" She didn't speak to him for days.

The second & final season of THE TWO COREYS reality show had to be shot around the very-real relationship breakdown between Haim & Feldman, which had been simulated in the prior season.
They didn’t speak outside of their ‘therapy’ sessions or the occasional scrap outside Haim’s apartment. This story has a bittersweet ending, though, as through the show the two Coreys actually reconciled their friendship and spent the final years of Haim’s life hanging out and tentatively working together again.

Not that it disrupted filming but Natalie Wood hated Richard Beymer so much on WSS and it was so painful for him that he never showed up for any of the multitude of anniversary celebration showings and TV interviews about the film. He is though interviewed on the DVD.
You could never tell by their relationship in the film.
Rita Moreno couldn't stand Natalie Wood. Again you can't tell by their acting.
Everybody talks today about how Wood and Beymer were so miscast.
Then how come their romance and its ultimate tragedy is still so incredibly moving? Yeah the music and dancing are great but at the end where there is so little it's just the two of them seeing their life together slip away it tears you apart. And Maria screaming about hatred at the end and wanting to shoot herself would be laughable if Wood weren't so magnificent.
I'd have given her the Oscar for that scene alone.

Brando wasn't in that film. Victor Mature was the star.

Welch was a pain in the ass on almost every film she made, which is why her career was very short. Just ask James Ivory.
"Nicol Williamson and Helen Mirren in ‘Excalibur’."
I read Mirren's autobiography and the enmity between them actually occurred during a stage production they were doing (he was a absolutely horrible person, and not the great genius many called him). By the time of EXCALIBUR, I think things had cooled down and they were at least professional and superficially cordial.

Brando ended up leaving “The Egyptian,” saying Bella Darvi was impossible to work with. Fox sued him, and won, with the result that Brando ended up playing Napoleon in “Desiree,” a role for which he was far better suited.
Though Victor Mature got top billing, it was Edmund Purdom who ended up replacing Brando, and was much better casting. Brando’s personality was far too strong for a character who is actually passive and more than a little wishy-washy.

Darvi, cast as the courtesan Nefer, was also jeered by more experienced star Jean Simmons, who laughed with other cast members that Darvi was "an actress who 'nefer' was." Just as filming was to start, Brando refused to make the film, his agent telling studio head Darryl F. Zanuck: "He doesn't like the director, he doesn't like the role. And he can't stand Bella Darvi!" Dirk Bogarde was offered the role, but turned it down. Edmund Purdom was finally cast in role of Sinuhe, the physician.

"I remember being surprised by either reading in his autobio or in an interview how much Guinness disliked Lean when they had many so many classic films together."
I don't know when Guinness wrote that book, but he and Lean had a parting of the ways after the latter's dismissive attitude toward Guinness during the shooting of A PASSAGE TO INDIA. So I wonder if Guinness' attitude toward Lean in general was colored by that last working relationship. Frankly, casting Guinness in that role was absurd anyway in 1981 and critics were not kind to Guinness' performance given that the rest of the Indian roles were played by native-born actors.
Certainly Lean was an autocrat, and he also was still smarting over the lambasting he got over RYAN'S DAUGHTER (and the film's financial failure) and the generally cool critical reception to DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (very successful financially but not really a good movie IMO). So I'm sure Lean felt additional pressure on PASSAGE as it was likely to be (and indeed was) his last film.

I've heard that Hugh Grant can be an asshole on occasion, snarky and dismissive and generally cunty if he's in the mood or takes a dislike to someone. But I've never heard of him screaming, fighting, or throwing diva fits.

Hugh Grant was almost the handsome Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter 2. Did I read the role went to the less handsome Branagh because of Hugh Grant's on set reputation?
Maybe during Restoration, RDJ was in the midst of kicking cocaine. He's eccentric and kooky even without drugs. Is Hugh a coke snorter too?

Judy Davis (an actress I’ve always considered over-rated and wearisome), allegedly made famed director David Lean’s life less than a box of bon bons on A Passage To India over the interpretation of her character. Of course she tells it differently...that he wasn’t, unlike her good self, in his prime.

R284 Grant is selfish, negative, proudly misogynistic and a massive whinger but I don’t know that he’s a sociopath. He’s too lazy for it. I would imagine his entitlement stems from his privileged background and the early successes he achieved. He’s never been challenged or had to be humble.
The sad part is that according to his press statements Hugh knows he’s rather a pig and doesn’t like himself much for it, either. I suspect chronic clinical depression as he seems to have intelligence and some rueful self-awareness but no impetus to change behaviour that he knows is crude.
There’s also his black sense of humour which doesn’t go over well with many people, especially Americans. Whether in jest or no, he seems to be utterly bored by life and disillusioned with everything he sees. Hugh Laurie is the same way.

No fan of Chevy Chase (his career and fame baffled me at the time) but this just lets Bill Murray off the hook and he’s an even bigger asshole than Chase is. From what I’ve read people on the cast resented Chase and Murray got that vibe so he just picked a fight with Chase because he sensed the hostility on the set. And there was no fist fight.

[quote]Teri Hatcher and the other Housewives. There was one whole season where the plot was written that Teri moved into an apartment and had her own storylines, rarely interacting with the others. The year after that, she clearly was green-screened into many of the scenes... in others, there were over-the-shoulder shots of a stand-in.
Lots and lots of drama behind the scenes on that show. Bet that fat old puppet master and bitter queen Marc Cherry loved stirring the pot with all those women-- whose lives and careers he controlled.

If you watch the Emmy Legends interview with Jane Curtain, Jane says it was basically true, but sort of defends Chase saying he WAS the biggest star and what did they expect the network to do, ignore that? She said, the public wanted him so they gave him more time, but she says it wasn't his doing, it's what the public wanted.
Curtain says all the guys were basically "jerks" and blames drugs for it. She said she and her was very close with John Belushi and his wife, then after John and her started SNL, John became rude and belligerent to her and a jerk. She says she can't think of why, except everyone but her, was on drugs constantly on that show.

[quote] Peter Sellers and Orson Welles hated each other so much when they were filming Casino Royale that they filmed some of their mutual scenes separately and then they were edited to make it look like they were in the room together.
That wasn't the end of it. Sellers pissed off everybody on the film to the point they fired him and deleted his remaining scenes.. Copying from IMDB:
According to interviews with director Val Guest, Peter Sellers became such a problem during the filming that the decision was made to fire him before he had finished all of his scenes. As a result, the end of the marching band torture scene was noticeably altered and Sellers' subsequent scenes were written out.
For the scene in which she was supposed to seduce James Bond wearing a nightgown and suggestively cradling a big bottle of champagne in her arms, Jacqueline Bisset was shocked when Peter Sellers suddenly turned on her and fired a gun directly into her face when she entered the room. Though the gun only had blanks, the stunt left her face coated in burning gunpowder and bleeding from where the shards tore her skin. "First I thought I had been actually shot and then when I realized it had been a blank, I thought I'd been blinded. My face looked like a shower spout of pinpricks leaking blood," said Bisset. The noise scared Bisset so much, she dropped the champagne bottle on her feet. After that, "I was panicked whenever I had a scene with Peter Sellers," said Bisset. "To get shot in your first scene with a big star, that is a nightmare."
Peter Sellers was unavailable for the filming of an ending and of linking footage to explain the details, leaving the filmmakers to devise a way to make the existing footage work without him. The framing device of a beginning and ending with David Niven was invented to salvage the footage. Val Guest indicated that he was given the task of creating a narrative thread which would link all segments of the film. He chose to use the original Bond and Vesper as linking characters to tie the story together. Guest states that in the originally released versions of the film, a cardboard cutout of Sellers in the background was used for the final scenes. In later versions, this cardboard cutout image was replaced by a sequence showing Sellers in highland dress, inserted by "trick photography".
After the film proceeded to become a flop at the box office, Joseph McGrath was approached by some of the producers of the movie, who told him that whilst they didn't blame him for all the tension and problems which occurred during filming, they made it clear that they never wanted to work with that b****** Sellers ever again.
