Stars or even d-listers believed to have been involved in crimes

The Michael Rooney thread inspired this as I'm now wondering if Mickey Rooney might have been involved in a crime. What other actors/ famous folk have been involved in crimes. Please briefly elaborate on the said crime so we have some context.

Andrew Prine was a suspect in the murder of starlet Karen Kupcinet in the early 60s. Evidence pointed to him, but it was not conclusive.

I think it was Suge Knight who did that to Vanilla Ice.

Phil Spector - convicted of murder

Jerry Lee Lewis had a bunch of wives who died mysteriously. Don't know if he was ever investigated.

I seem to recall suspicion around the death of William Shatner's third wife.

Pete Townsend was busted for kiddie porn but claimed he was only visiting sites to report them to authorities.

Supposedly Wallace Beery, Albert R. Broccoli (later producer of James Bond films), and notorious gangster (and Broccoli's cousin) Pat DiCicco were the perps.

For what it is worth, it has been verified that Wallace Beery immediately took off to Europe for four months.

Long rumored that Dean Marton when a boxer would throw matches, also rumored that he was mob muscle

Lots of C- d actors dealt/deal drugs in between a ting jobs.

The Joan Alen rumor has been around a long time, think it even got printed andshe didn't go after the publication, leading most people to believe it's true.

by Anonymousreply 51June 17, 2012 12:43 AM

Interesting, R43. It sounds like it's possible that the guy was trying to get into the apartment (to see Scott?) and may have slipped and fallen to his death. There was something more going on there than what they were saying, it's obvious, but I agree that you don't kill someone and then go back to sleep. And you don't watch your dad kill your lover and then go take a nap.

Robert Mitchum served some fifty days for marijuana possession in 1948. He described his week at the county jail "like Palm Springs, but without the riff-raff." Mitchum then spent 43 days on a California prison farm.

He got a bit of heat from the studio, but the guilty pleas was set aside and the case dismissed -- it was a set-up designed to catch Hollywood stars, but he and his date didn't catch the tip-off.

by Anonymousreply 64June 17, 2012 2:57 PM
James Caan discovered a guy fucking his then-17 year old son Scott, and threw him out an eight-story window to his death.

James Caan is gay or at least bi. Had a long-term relationship with a man before he became famous. The apartment was probably his love nest to hook up with guys and the dead guy was his lover.

by Anonymousreply 65June 17, 2012 3:02 PM

The delusion on this thread is excessive, even for DL. James Caan was/is famously a douchebag pussy hound. Hes also notoriously homophobic which may have closeted Scott.

FYI, people dont seem to be aware that Scott dated Kim Stewart in his 20s, before the Oceans 11 films (while he was focused on making it as a professional photographer). If hes closeted, its not for the acting career, its to make his dad happy.

R40, I have no trouble believing that Beery would be involved in such a thing. He routinely beat Gloria Swanson, and even tricked her into taking an abortifacient after she told him she was pregnant. A real charming fellow.

by Anonymousreply 69June 17, 2012 4:15 PM

Burt Reynolds supposedly beat his wife Judy Carne and it was bad enough to land her in the hospital. Rona Barrett had it in her book. Rona was a gossip reporter who wasn't known for making things up like so many alleged gossip writers do today. She was just willing to report on unsavory events about celebs which wasn't considered respectable back in the day.

Not sure if anyone posted this but Reynolds was also rumored to be involved in a death of his co-star's manager while they were in Arizona shooting The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing. The manager allegedly accosted Sarah Miles when she returned late from a birthday party for Reynolds and Reynolds was said to have whisked her away to safety in his room. The manager was found dead the next day. Though he was found with a gash to the back of his head his death was ruled a suicide. I suppose he could have cut his head while falling. Don't know any other details but it did cast a shadow over Reynold's career which was red hot at the time.

Brad Pitt's charge came from a prank when he mooned some passing cars on the highway. It's not listed as indecent exposure on the record though.

There were rumors that Michael Madsen did something or tried to do something to Jennifer Connelly during the filming of The Hot Spot. May have been coming on too strong & the rumors took off from there. I do seem to remember rumors of Madsen being a violent drunk.

The article I read about Mickey Rooney's ex-wife's death said that she had just come from visiting Rooney in the hospital. She came home where her friends and the guy involved were waiting and played them a tape she made of her conversation with Rooney in the hospital. On the tape she said she would stop seeing the guy even as a friend if it bothered Rooney. Rooney and she had 4 children together so Rooney may have felt uneasy about this guy for whatever reasons.

After they listened to the tape Rooney's ex-wife and this guy went into a bedroom and locked the door. The friends later called out to them asking to use her car and got no reply. They borrowed the car anyway and left and later returned. That's when the bodies were found. Three of the children were in the house at the time of the killings and had to be removed. I think it would have been noticed had Rooney left his hospital bed to go to her house (which he owned) to shoot them.

And, of course, we KNOW John Landis was involved in crimes.

by Anonymousreply 71June 17, 2012 4:28 PM

Robert Mitchum used to tell a story about being on a chain gang somewhere down south and escaping. I heard him tell it on Carson once.

He admitted it wasn't exactly Cool Hand Luke, more like picking up trash wearing an orange vest and he didn't escape so much as just wander off, but he made a big deal out of the fact that technically he was still a wanted man.

Was that bullshit?

Matthew Broderick hit someone with his car in Ireland.

Rex Reed - shoplifting

Rebecca Gayheart killed a child jaywalker, was sued by the parents and paid for the child's hospital expenses and funeral. Sentenced to probation, a fine, and 750 hours community service.

From the old days: actress Helen Walker (Nightmare Alley) picked up three servicemen hitchhiking on New Year's in 1946. There was an awful accident killing one of the soldiers and badly injuring the other two. The surviving soldiers said she was drunk and she was brought to trial. She was acquitted but it was just post-WW II and involved our fighting men so it wrecked her career.

Tom Neal of "Detour" - beat the hell out of Franchot Tone and was blackballed. He killed his wife Gale and went to trial, got ten years for involuntary manslaughter.

The Thomas Ince scandal - rumor that W. R. Hearst shot him, Luella Parsons saw him and got her column by blackmailing him.

Jeffrey Jones - arrested for child porn

Eddie Murphy and the unusual death of his tranny hooker.

Keanu Reeves and the convenient still birth of a baby he never wanted. Then the single car accident and death of the baby's mother about year and a half later, just two days after she had made a visit to Keanu, on location. They were not together so why the visit?

For some reason, Robert Wagner's odd actions after Natalie went missing.

Don Johnson. There's just something about him.

What happened to Courtney's bandmate? That woman is definitely dangerous.

by Anonymousreply 93June 17, 2012 7:37 PM

all I know was that Matthew Broderick's accident resulted in the death of one of his victims during the 1980's. The family own a holiday home in Donegal and visit regularly. So much so, that SJP actually was at a local agricultural show one year while they were on vacation, and presented a trophy. This was at the top of the Sex and the City era, when none of locals would have expected her to bother with the likes of them and the locals were very very surprised at the gesture! Besides, I know only too well the pain of car crashes since I was in one this year. Luckily I didn't have a passenger otherwise that person would have been killed. I crashed into a truck with the worst damage on the passenger side, so bad that hypothetically that person would have been either seriously injured or dead if present. I was lucky to have escaped without any injury whatsoever.

As for the ladies, at least a sizable percentage of them were hookers at some point.

by Anonymousreply 99June 17, 2012 8:04 PM

Busby Berkeley and Clark Gable: killed people in automobile accidents, were bailed out by the studio bosses.

I'm blanking on the name, but there was an actor in the 30s/40s who murdered his wife's lover, served time, and then returned to acting.

E!'s "Mysteries and Scandals" was a goldmine for this stuff.

Didn't Burt Reynolds also have a hand in Inger Stevens "suicide"? He also beat up his wives and other starlets.Someone asked Angie Dickinson about this once and she said nothing and left the room quickly.

by Anonymousreply 102June 17, 2012 8:30 PM
Didn't Burt Reynolds also have a hand in Inger Stevens "suicide"?

Inger Stevens just plainly had periodic bouts with depression.

What may or may not have lead to her passing by her own hand was that she was secretly married to Ike Jones. The reason why she was secretly married to Ike Jones was that he was an African American gentleman and her "handlers" told her it would not be in her best interest to publicly speak of being married.

Downright tragic tale with Inger Stevens, but I really do not think that Burt Reynolds killed her or anything. She was just a lady who was somewhat ahead of her time and who was also just not truly well mentally.

"For a while, Tilda Swinton made a living betting on horses."

I don't believe that, nobody makes a living betting on horses! If she didn't come from money I'd say she was trying to come up something rather shadier, but she come from money she did.

She did, R112, heard it out of her own mouth during an interview. She said she'd look at the horses before a race and get a sense of which one would win.

Dean Torrance of the Surfer Rock duo Jan & Dean financed the kidnapping of Frank Sinatra, Jr..

In his defense he pleaded ignorance of what the money was being used for. There was evidence that didn't support that.

At the trial, he perjured himself then came back before the judge after a break and recanted his testimony. Some believe his change of heart was prompted by his being approached and threatened with severe bodily harm during the recess. He was extremely lucky to avoid a lengthy prison sentence.

Christian Slater:

In 2000, Slater married Ryan Haddon, the daughter of '70s model Dayle Haddon. The couple have two children, Jaden Christopher (b. 1999) and Eliana Sophia (b. 2001).[4] In 2003, Haddon was arrested for assaulting Slater at a Hard Rock Cafe while on a trip to Las Vegas.[8] Haddon allegedly threw a glass bottle and gashed Slater’s neck open.[9] Haddon was charged with domestic battery, booked at Las Vegas’ Clark County Detention Center, and freed after posting a bond. Afterwards, Slater had to get 20 stitches on his neck.[9][10] They announced a separation over Christmas 2004 while Slater was performing in a stage version of the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in London's West End. They officially separated in 2005 and divorced in 2007.[11]

In 2007, Slater made news for stating that he is still in love with Heathers co-star Winona Ryder.[12] He was once quoted as saying "Work is my hobby, staying sober is my job."[13] [edit]Arrests and convictions In 1989, Slater was arrested for drunk driving and assault. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail.[4][14]

In 1994, he was arrested when he tried to board a commercial plane with a gun in his luggage.[14] He was sentenced to community service.[15]

In 1997, Slater was convicted of assaulting his then-girlfriend, Michelle Jonas, and a police officer while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.[4][14] He spent over 100 days in a rehabilitation facility while out on bail and then was sentenced to a three-month term in jail followed by three months in a residential rehab center.[3]

On May 24, 2005, Slater was arrested in Manhattan, New York, after he allegedly sexually harassed a woman on the street.[16] A video of Slater being arrested was recorded and shown on television. Slater was charged with third degree sexual abuse and was held at the 19th precinct in Manhattan.[16][17] However, Slater denied the charge.[17]

"Keanu Reeves and the convenient still birth of a baby he never wanted. Then the single car accident and death of the baby's mother about year and a half later, just two days after she had made a visit to Keanu, on location. They were not together so why the visit?"

The so-called girlfriend was batshit crazy. She was rocker Dave Navarro's assistant for a few years, this was while he was hopeless heroin addict. I met her a few times, she was whiny with a permanent sneer on her face. At that point in his life, Navarro surrounded himself with enablers, she was the worse choice he could have made for a PA.

This woman was supposed to help Navarro with emails, take care of the running of his house and also be the liason between Dave and a certain segment of Navarro's fans who he became close with. These were fans he would give his personal email address to. (Dave had given a lot of his fans his email and phone numbers before he got really messed up on heroin, he trusted these fans and many were musician like him, not groupies)

For absolutely no reason, other than her insanity, this young woman started harrassing Dave's fans through his email account. Dave was so messed up at that point, it was futile to try to contact him and besides she was intercepting all his emails, so she'd simply delete any email where a fan was explaining what was going on with her harassing them. She then started answering emails FOR Navarro, which was not part of her job. A great majority of the emails were harassing.

This young woman was clearly not professional in most of her dealings with Dave's fans and other showbiz people she dealt with. Whatever she claimed to be, she was nothing more than a PA.

I'm not saying this young woman deserved to be murdered, but the general public, who have followed this story of her involvement with Keanu Reeves, have absolutely no idea what this woman did behind the scenes, she was batshit crazy and vindictive to people she didn't even know. It stands to reason that she had a boatload of enemies, in and out of showbiz.

When I heard about her death, I wasn't surprised at all. If she wasn't going to die at the hands of someone she really pissed off or ripped off, she was going to die from her drugging or drinking. She was not as innocent as the casual observer might have assumed.

All I know is Keanu did not want a baby and in the end, Keanu didn't have, to have a baby. Of course he got a shitload of sympathy about a dead baby and a dead girlfriend, who was never his girlfriend. But you better believe he paid for her beautiful funeral, Keanu front and center in the tabloids.

In 1968, Alain Delon and his wife were implicated in a huge sex, drugs, and organized crime scandal surrounding the death of his bodyguard, who was found wrapped in a mattress in the woods. The scandal threatened to expose shady goings-on that somehow involved Mme. Pompidou. I don't remember any resolution to the scandal.
His career momentum was briefly halted with a two-year (1927–1929) forced hiatus when he served 25 months for manslaughter in California's San Quentin prison for the death of actor Ray Raymond, a few days after their fistfight.[5]
Raymond's widow, Dorothy MacKaye, later married Kelly. She was briefly imprisoned for being an accomplice in the killing; and, wrote about her experiences, titled, "Women in Prison," that became a 1933 film, Ladies They Talk About, with Barbara Stanwyck.

I own this thread, Bitches! - Robert Wagner

When William Desmond Taylor was shot in 1922, a huge scandal erupted. He was seeing so many lovers, both female and male, that police didn't know where to start in what they assumed was a crime of passion. The case went unsolved for the next 40 odd years until 1964 when a friend witnessed the deathbed confession of Margaret Gibson who starred with Taylor in a silent film called "The Kiss." Of Death, apparently.

In Ireland with girlfriend Jennifer Grey, Matthew Broderick turned right instead of left on a country road and collided head on with a car coming from the (correct) opposite direction. The crash claimed the lives of a young woman and her mother. Broderick and Grey suffered minor injuries.

Before he died, Andy Gibb confessed in two major print interviews that when he was younger he and his mates would enter a crowded sports stadium and throw claw hammers as hard as they could into the bleachers and run.

Instant Karma is a Bitch.

There was a rumor about John Lennon. Stu Sutcliffe's wife tells a different tale than the "official" version of the night her husband got his head bashed in outside a bar. He was a pretty boy, the creative genius behind the Beatles look and act, and he died young from injuries connected to that beating. He was very close to John, who professed his love for him. The official version is that John dragged Stu away from the thugs who were stomping him and actually saved him. If I recall correctly, Stu's wife, Ingrid, or someone close to her, claimed that it was John himself who kicked Stu repeatedly in the head outside that bar, in an alcoholic blackout, and she never forgave him.

Actually Spider Sabich was shot in the bathroom of his home in Starwood, Colorado--not on the ski slopes. Longet was arrested for the crime, but the jury believed her story the gun accidentally backfired when Sabich was showing her how to use it. Longet was convicted only of a misdemeanor of criminal negligence.

At the time, The Globe pinned it directly on Keanu.

by Anonymousreply 146June 28, 2012 3:53 AM

"Authorities in Los Angeles never took action against drug dealers operating out of The Viper Room, allowing them to operate with impunity as they had for decades. The only legal case that emerged by the end of the decade was Anthony Fox's lawsuit alleging that Johnny Depp had conspired to divert profits from The Viper Room. According to the Celebrity Justice section of the Warner Brothers website, the Judge in this case ruled that: "Defendant Depp . . . breached his fiduciary duties to the corporation and to Fox as a minority shareholder. The facts establish persistent and pervasive fraud and mismanagement and abuse of authority."

While lawyers for both sides were battling it out over the lawsuit, two things happened; Johnny Depp moved to France and Anthony Fox disappeared. It would seem odd to some that Fox, the single parent of a daughter to whom he was deeply devoted, would just vanish on his own, particularly given that it appeared he would win his legal battle with Depp. In Depp's case, he had met a woman with whom he wanted to start a family. Depp and his partner Vanessa Paradis settled into a new life in Paradis' home country, France..."

Robert Pastorelli from "Murphy Brown" had a similar situation -- his girlfriend supposedly shot herself to death in front of him in 1999. No note, no friends saying she'd been depressed, nothing.

The case was eventually ruled a homicide, not a suicide, and the cops reopened the case. Pastorelli was the main (if not the only) suspect. UPI reported he was "on the verge" of being charged in the case when he OD'd in 2004.

If her new book doesn't do it, then nothing will.
I wouldn't be surprised if Lori Loughlin and her fug husband have been involved in other crimes in addition to the college admission scam.

[italic]Full House[/italic] was a crime in and of itself.

Sadly, we will never find out what really happened to Depp's Viper Room business partner Anthony Fox. Depp looks awful these days and if he was to pass away in the next few years, I can see some renewed interest in the Anthony Fox disappearance.

R162: That was Brooke Hart, not Brett Hart.

It's an interesting story, because the entire country was aware of the mob baying for the kidnapers' lives outside the jail, yet very little was done to discourage them.

Wikipedia has a good precis of the case:

I wouldn't be surprised if some mini-series is made about Brooke Hart kidnapping/murder and the later lynching of the kidnappers. A movie that was loosely based on the story was made years ago and it wasn't that great.
