R71, calling him "out of the closet" is a bit of a stretch. He is quietly known in the community and in certain circles to be gay. But he never mentioned it in his run for state treasurer, nor did he mention it on the floor of the state senate during debate over the civil unions bill. He also was the lone Republican who voted for the bill, so his "challenging the system from the inside" was unable to convince a single member of his party of his position. Of course, if you won't say "gay" out loud and act ashamed of yourself, it's easy for them to consider you shameful.

But it also means that anybody Rutherford supports is going to be accused of being closeted, especially if it's a hot young guy R68. So I doubt he would get much involved in this little contest.

Well, maybe he was not out "forever," but sometime between 1983 and 1986.

Dan was sort of closeted in 1983 when I knew him, but not very (his 'fiancee' was safely stashed in far off Atlanta and his engagement did not prevent him from asking guys to room with him - he shared a 39th floor apt at Rush and Oak on a rental basis). By 1986 I saw him bellied up to the bar at the Loading Zone and making passes at men in the bathroom and he could not be said to be closeted. He had a condo in Edgewater then, long before he went downstate to go into State Assembly politics. But Dan couldn't get anywhere in government because Republican Governor Miss Jim Thompson notoriously preferred dumb blond men (Big Jim had the best looking bodyguards I'd ever seen- Janice Dickinson would have been jealous), so Dan tried the private sector for awhile. Much later he buried himself with the enemy downstate and made his own way to the legislature.

Dan was once smart and dynamic and I shudder to think of all the moral compromises he must have made over the years with horrible people who treated him like he smelled bad. I remember having a certain distaste when I read he voted against gay marriage once although I also think he was a lone republican to vote for civil unions another time. But it wasn't a question of secrets: some Christian nutjobs "outed" him years ago to try to derail his career, but it never worked.

If Dan weren't running the Evil Bigot Romney's campaign in Ill. I'd actually feel sorry for him. I can see him mentoring Schock - Dan remained in some young leaders group downstate until he was well past old enough to know better. But aside from gaining some weight, he is really not a hopeless troll - so I'd be very surprised if he were the BI subject and Marzullo couldn't really hope to ruin him anyway. The BI implies it is a Congressman.

If you look at the Republican delegation from Illinois, you have a boatload of gay faces. I'd say Dold, Walsh, and Johnson are too good looking and too young to be the hopeless troll mentor. Shimkus is probably not in a position to "mentor" anyone. Cantor is but I can't see either one of them turning him down since Cantor has real power and is definitely good looking. Hultgren and Schilling fit the gay face troll category; and Roskam doesn't look too gay but he is an older troll who probably thinks he's better looking than he is and well established so I'd lean towards him.

On the other hand Marzullo might have planted this BI because he presumes Cantor's support for Kinzinger is based on some type of lust and the negativity was just a little gratuitous bashing "you're ugly!"

I just reviewed Rutherford's floor statement from when he voted for the civil unions bill. He said it was about "fairness" and "the right thing to do". But not a word about the fact the he is gay and had been denied these same rights for so many years. It's a statement like that that could change minds and move votes. I'm not giving someone a 'profile in courage award' for being out if they won't do that.

People working in DC would not be aware of or talking about politicians working at a state or local level.

When I google Kinzinger and Kirk I see that they had a lot of time together last year doing town halls and such but I don't see where Kirk endorsed him this year.

But again, how can they ruin Kirk when the whole state was flooded with gay rumours about him during the whole of the last election cycle.

And the Dems hardly "control" the Senate in a meaningful way, as long as the GOP has more than 40 seats. The Repubs stop much meaningful change. But the GOP had held up his nomination for almost 2 years.

DADT was an attempt by Clinton and the Dems to at least allow gays in the military if they were quiet about it. The next chapter in Schock-Kinzinger-Cantor makes me think OP's BI may be halfway legit.

I too was just watching THIS WEEK and wanted to find out more about Kinzinger. The search autofilled the GAY after his name which led me here. The page also showed all his political stances to be "inferred".
