The Republicans Seem To Have Another Gay Scandal On Their Hands
Two Representatives from the same delegation took their "friendship" to the next level several months ago. Fellow GOP members were willing to ignore the obvious until Congressman Top sided with Congressman bottom in an intra-party battle (along with a lustful mentor they both share--who will never get in either's pants, no matter how hard he tries).
If Congressman Bottom's opponent--who enjoys the support of most of his colleagues--loses, the story will spread faster than the Great Chicago Fire. Sucks for the Republicans, but at least the Democrats would be guaranteed to win two seats in the process!
I swear. Hill staffers can be worse than a sewing circle sometimes. Especially when they've drank way too much green beer ;)

This is wonderful news!!! For the obvious reasons, true, but also, it's a demonstration of your resourcefulness OP, that you would take advantage of the drunken carousing of St. Patrick's day to mine and exploit careless friends for gossip. This is in the true spirit and tradition of DL, and I applaud you!
I wish more DLers would take advantage in such situations.I have only one question. Were you sober enough to accurately absorb the information? And if you were, why weren't you drunk?

R2, I would never exploit friends, only obnoxious douchebags with loose lips. Besides, I'll promise nothing more than a mere confirmation once all the relevant players have been correctly identified.

This just appeared on Dailykos.com
"This seems pretty remarkable: A week after personally endorsing Adam Kinzinger in the GOP primary, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's super PAC, the YG Action Fund, is spending $50K to air a last-minute radio ad ahead of Tuesday's election. I thought Cantor's involvement in the race was pretty unusual to begin with, but to fork out actual dollars to help knock off a veteran incumbent, Don Manzullo, seems doubly so. But it also feels like a fairly smart move: If Kinzinger wins this tight, ugly race, he'll owe total loyalty to Cantor for time immemorial."

Interesting: Dan Rutherford, the Illinois state treasurer, is an out-of-the-closet gay Republican who supports the gay agenda in Illinois.

maybe he's not the mentor in question
by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 19, 2012 6:59 PM

R71, calling him "out of the closet" is a bit of a stretch. He is quietly known in the community and in certain circles to be gay. But he never mentioned it in his run for state treasurer, nor did he mention it on the floor of the state senate during debate over the civil unions bill. He also was the lone Republican who voted for the bill, so his "challenging the system from the inside" was unable to convince a single member of his party of his position. Of course, if you won't say "gay" out loud and act ashamed of yourself, it's easy for them to consider you shameful.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | March 19, 2012 7:03 PM
|
But it also means that anybody Rutherford supports is going to be accused of being closeted, especially if it's a hot young guy R68. So I doubt he would get much involved in this little contest.
Dan didn't have to R69, Republican enemies outed him.
Well, maybe he was not out "forever," but sometime between 1983 and 1986.
Dan was sort of closeted in 1983 when I knew him, but not very (his 'fiancee' was safely stashed in far off Atlanta and his engagement did not prevent him from asking guys to room with him - he shared a 39th floor apt at Rush and Oak on a rental basis). By 1986 I saw him bellied up to the bar at the Loading Zone and making passes at men in the bathroom and he could not be said to be closeted. He had a condo in Edgewater then, long before he went downstate to go into State Assembly politics. But Dan couldn't get anywhere in government because Republican Governor Miss Jim Thompson notoriously preferred dumb blond men (Big Jim had the best looking bodyguards I'd ever seen- Janice Dickinson would have been jealous), so Dan tried the private sector for awhile. Much later he buried himself with the enemy downstate and made his own way to the legislature.
Dan was once smart and dynamic and I shudder to think of all the moral compromises he must have made over the years with horrible people who treated him like he smelled bad. I remember having a certain distaste when I read he voted against gay marriage once although I also think he was a lone republican to vote for civil unions another time. But it wasn't a question of secrets: some Christian nutjobs "outed" him years ago to try to derail his career, but it never worked.
If Dan weren't running the Evil Bigot Romney's campaign in Ill. I'd actually feel sorry for him. I can see him mentoring Schock - Dan remained in some young leaders group downstate until he was well past old enough to know better. But aside from gaining some weight, he is really not a hopeless troll - so I'd be very surprised if he were the BI subject and Marzullo couldn't really hope to ruin him anyway. The BI implies it is a Congressman.
If you look at the Republican delegation from Illinois, you have a boatload of gay faces. I'd say Dold, Walsh, and Johnson are too good looking and too young to be the hopeless troll mentor. Shimkus is probably not in a position to "mentor" anyone. Cantor is but I can't see either one of them turning him down since Cantor has real power and is definitely good looking. Hultgren and Schilling fit the gay face troll category; and Roskam doesn't look too gay but he is an older troll who probably thinks he's better looking than he is and well established so I'd lean towards him.
On the other hand Marzullo might have planted this BI because he presumes Cantor's support for Kinzinger is based on some type of lust and the negativity was just a little gratuitous bashing "you're ugly!"
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 19, 2012 7:22 PM

Cantor is good-looking only in a very dark & ugly deatheater way...
by Anonymous | reply 76 | March 19, 2012 7:26 PM

Very interesting, R75 - thanks for the long-term Illinois perspective. I think Rutherford isn't a bad guy (other than the moral compromises he has made by working for Romney, etc.)
But I just can't call someone "out" (despite them having been "outed" by the right wing) if they won't say they are gay publicly when it matters. I just reviewed Rutherford's floor statement from when he voted for the civil unions bill. He said it was about "fairness" and "the right thing to do". But not a word about the fact the he is gay and had been denied these same rights for so many years. It's a statement like that that could change minds and move votes. I'm not giving someone a 'profile in courage award' for being out if they won't do that.

Shimkus endorsed Kinzinger with Cantor.
Shock identified Shimkus as a "potential mentor"
Shimkus is from Collinsville, so we have to hit up the St. Louis gays to spy him out.
Shimkus was involved in the Foley Page scandal as not passing on info!
Shimkus also survived an attempt to gerrymander him out of a district, so he would be a good mento for Kinzinger.

R135, you're wrong on so many levels. For one thing, the Dems have advanced gay rights. Abolish Don't Ask Don't Tell anyone? The Repubs would have stopped that if they could. The GOP also tries to stop gay appointees, like the gay federal judge confirmed last week, only after Harry Reid forced the GOP to filibuster or get off the pot. And the Dems hardly "control" the Senate in a meaningful way, as long as the GOP has more than 40 seats. The Repubs stop much meaningful change. ENDA would pass if the GOP would stop its opposition, and DOMA would be done. So while the Dems aren't perfect, they are night and day compared to the hateful anti-gay GOP and its closet cases mentioned above.

Dems get the ball rolling, while the Republicans throw everything including their own grandmas in the way trying to stop it.
This will never see the light of day ... unless Schock and Kitzinger will have threesomes with blabby mouthed hustlers who *crossing fingers* secretly film the encounter(s) as proof.

Don't ask-Don't tell was a Clinton action. Judges blocked have more to do with their legislating from the bench, versus who they sleep with. I don't have to follow in lock step every gay politician just because he's gay. They can be wrong sometimes also.

DADT was a compromise Clinton managed to get through since his original idea for the brave gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military was shot down by the Republicans (otherwise how could they use gays as scapegoats for their numerous agendas when there are gay and lesbian military heroes known to the general public?).

"Judges blocked have more to do with their legislating from the bench, versus who they sleep with."
The recent round of judges blocked by Republicans actually had widespread support and were not opposed for "legislating from the bench" or any other substantive reason. When Reid finally forced a vote, the gay judge even received the votes of most Republicans - he was confirmed by a vote of something like 93 to 7, with only seven of the most virulent homophobes in the republican party voting against him. But the GOP had held up his nomination for almost 2 years.

And you are right that DADT was a Clinton action. But in context, the GOP just wanted to keep an outright ban on gays in the military. Clinton wanted to allow gays in. DADT was an attempt by Clinton and the Dems to at least allow gays in the military if they were quiet about it. It was a failed attempt and misguided, but you have to acknowledge that it came about only because hateful conservatives wanted to keep gays out.

[quote]Don't ask-Don't tell was a Clinton action.
Clinton wanted gays to be allowed to openly serve in the military. Democratic Senator Sam Nunn led the contingent that favored maintaining the absolute ban on gays. Congressional phone lines were flooded by organized anti-gay opposition.
Congress rushed to enact the existing total gay ban policy into federal law, outflanking Clinton's planned repeal effort. Clinton called for legislation to overturn the ban, but encountered intense opposition from members of Congress, and hate-mongering portions of the public. DADT emerged as a compromise policy so Clinton signed it. DADT was a step away from the total ban.
For those of us serving on active duty at that time, DADT was a positive move forward and we appreciate Clinton's attempt to eliminate the total ban. Having served under the old system as well as under DADT, the latter was a welcome change in that era.
Naturally, most Rethulicunts have always fought against gays in the military, but if all the Democrats in Congress had supported lifting the ban on gays in the military, it would have been gone two decades ago.
The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network was founded in 1993 to advocate an end to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the U.S. Armed Forces. SLDN's work is just as important today as it was when we started the job in '93.

Kinzinger Defeats Manzullo in Illinois's 16th Congressional District Primary

[quote]Kinzinger is all but assured of a return to Congress; no Democrats filed to run in the 16th District.
Wow, just wow. The district is so far right that the Dems don't even bother?
[quote]But the script flipped here, with 10-term veteran Manzullo garnering the bulk of the tea party and movement conservative support while Kinzinger, a freshman, lined up more establishment backing, including an endorsement from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor last week.
Like the players on Survior and The Amazing Race say: This was a total Game Change!
But it looks like Kinzinger didn't pander to the Tea Party crowd which makes him look like a more moderate Republican, right?
Cantor really threw himself into hot water for Kitzinger. Kitzinger should let Cantor at least suck his cock for that win.

This thread proves any legislative action can be rationalized if it fits your agenda. DADT was a comprimise for BOTH sides of the aisle. I worked on the hill from the late 90's thru 2006. If people think that all members of congress with a "D" behind their name, are for gay rights...they are sadly mistaken. I have been in the room during conversations about being able to put issues on the table that they know won't pass and blaming Republicans at the same time. This is fact, not "I've heard" etc. Both parties play this game. It's the same old song and dance...."don't judge us by our actions...just our intentions"
by Anonymous | reply 149 | March 21, 2012 1:57 PM

r149, do intentions and personal issues really matter when the end results benefit the Gay community? Can the Gay community really be that picky?
Is there really a point of cheering and supporting gay Republicans who throw the gay community under the bus with their anti gay voting records? Should they at least recieve a 'gold star' for not being too smug about it?

The next chapter in Schock-Kinzinger-Cantor makes me think OP's BI may be halfway legit.
"Ray Allen, Cantorâs political consultant, said in a written statement that Cantorâs donation to CPA had been earmarked expressly for use in the Illinois race and not in any other contests. Allen also said that Cantor had made the contribution after being approached by Rep. Aaron Schock, an Illinois Republican who also supported Kinzinger and who had asked Cantor to donate to CPA.
âOn Thursday, March 15, 2012, Leader Cantor was asked by Congressman Schock to contribute to an organization that was supporting Adam Kinzinger in the Illinois election of March 20,â Allen wrote. âEricPAC subsequently made a contribution with the understanding that those funds would be used only in the effort to support Congressman Kinzinger. Leader Cantor does not support the actions of this organization in any other election.â
Why was Cantor so concerned about Kinzinger losing his primary fight that he was willing to piss off all the other Republicans in Congress by supporting him to such an extent? And that he and Schock apparently conspired to hide his extra support through this other front group? Scandal!!!
