The studios put out a lot of shirtless photos of him in swimsuits.

R1, Brians Drive-in doesn't let you link pics for some reason. Here's a "famous" pic of Guy (on left) with Robert Mitchum.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 20, 2011 1:41 AM |
What I find interesting about these beefcake photos of Guy from the 1940s is the all the prominently featured body hair which had been considered fairly verboten in films of the 1920s and 1930s. %0D %0D Sadly, it is now as well.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 20, 2011 1:45 AM |
That photo of Guy with Robert Mitchum is HOT!! Weren't they both bi? You just know they banged each other.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 20, 2011 1:52 AM |
[quote]He was into being fucked by Rory Calhoun.%0D %0D Well, that was according to a book about their agent, Henry Wilson. There was a VERY hot passage in that book describing Calhoun pounding Guy's ripe ass in his car in the driveway of his home.%0D %0D Pic of Calhoun here.

Guy cries in bed, shirtless, in TIL THE END OF TIME.
High point of his career.

Honey, they sure don't have guys like that in Hollywood anymore! Oh man! Both Roy Calhoun and Guy Madison are two of the many studs that came out of that period in Hollywood that you just can't take your eyes off of.
BTW, I think I have heard that Roy Calhoun came out of the closet later in life. He said he was 100% gay.
I don't think Robert Mitchum was bisexual though. I never heard that one.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 20, 2011 1:28 PM |
Mitchum was a hobo in his teens--I imagine he got some homohobo sex when he was hopping freights...
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 20, 2011 1:30 PM |
Was that common in a life as a hobo to have sex with other hobos R26?
BTW, he read he ran always from home around at the age of 13 because his parents got a divorced. His mother was a suffragette, and had writers and intellectuals around her house. His father was a railroad worker who died when Mitchum was only 2 years old. Mitchum's stepfather was a British army major. Mitchm was an intellectual like his mother.

What a beautiful man.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 20, 2011 2:11 PM |
Robert Mitchum very much might have been bisexual, if not gay. There have been many stories over the years. Shirley MacLaine was in a relationship with him and alluded that he was "a sensitive man with many layers and secrets." I have read other accounts of his attraction to men, as well. NO specific stories of anyone who hooked up with him, though.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 20, 2011 3:05 PM |
Mr. Wilson apparently had sex with both Rory and Bob Conrad to see who would get the part of James West in the Wild Wild West. Bobby must have been better, since he got it. Guy was up for the part too, but maybe because Mr. WIlson already had him, he didn't even get a try-out.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 20, 2011 3:21 PM |
here to tell you Mitchum was a functional bi who preferred men
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 20, 2011 3:24 PM |
Willson never had Rory and Guy. They had each other and it broke his heart. "'Rory was fucking Guy. And they always told me they didn't like to do it with men,' [Willson said.] He confronted Guy, who insisted that his dalliance was a momentary lapse, the first and only time. 'But I knew it couldn't be true,' said Henry. 'Rory was so big, and Guy was taking him with no problem.' Rory later confessed that yes, their affair had been going on for months." [Well, we hear Hollywood always loves a big opening.]
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 20, 2011 3:28 PM |
Rory Calhoun was a jailhouse thug. Guy liked 'em rough.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 20, 2011 6:24 PM |
Guy and Rory were really past their prime at the time that Wild Wild West was being cast. They had each starred in long-popular 1950s Westerns of their own (Guy was Wild Bill Hickock; can't remember the name of Rory's series) but considered has-beens by the target audience (teen boys) for the new show. %0D %0D Even Bob Conrad was no spring chicken by the mid-60s but, of course, was still in amazing shape. I don't think Guy or Rory could have pulled off all those shirtless S&M scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 20, 2011 10:57 PM |
So effective in his short scene in SINCE YOU WENT AWAY.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 20, 2011 11:06 PM |
His dancing was okay in that clip, maybe a little slow for jitterbugging, but he still looked sexy doing it.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 21, 2011 2:58 AM |
Among the clips above is one that says it has Guy in 5 Against the House....but is that him talking to Brian Keith in the clip? It doesn't look like him to me, though I believe he is in that movie.%0D %0D And yes, he was a crappy dancer! That girl was practically dragging him through the jitterbug like he was a wooden mannequin.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 21, 2011 3:48 AM |
No, that's not Guy in that clip with Keith. There's another clip for the trailer for that flick and you can see Guy (who looks a lot older and has dark hair). Never seen that movie, but it looks like it is basically Oceans 11. By the way, the crew-cut guy in that clip is Green Acres' Hank Kimball!
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 21, 2011 4:33 AM |
And the waiter in the jitterbug clip is Harry Von Zell from Burns and Allen!
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 21, 2011 12:43 PM |
Sorry, the man was a lox and had two left feet. In the clip the only thing that made him look good was Jean Porter, who could dance. I still love Guy and have ever since I was a kid and saw Wild Bill Hickock.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 21, 2011 2:54 PM |
Man, that jitterbug music just reminded me of how thrilling MUSIC was at that time in history. The beat, the rhythm, the instruments all helped Madison's lackluster dancing to have some "heat," in addition to how gorgeous he was.%0D %0D Doesn't that music just make your pulse race in ways that music today does NOT? And men don't look like that, either. Sigh.

[quote]That girl was practically dragging him through the jitterbug like he was a wooden mannequin.%0D %0D To be fair, that was part of his character's storyline. He was supposed to have been somewhat reluctantly dragged out there by a younger enthusiastic teen-ager. In the film, his character has trouble fitting back in society and he's also dating a more sophisticated woman.

The Henry Wilson book was good. Henry had a thing for Guy and he saw Rory fucking Guy in the backseat of their car. He said Rory had a huge dick.
I believe it was the book or some website but even thought both Rory and Guy married women they stayed good friends throughout their lives.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 22, 2011 2:34 AM |
Rory and Guy were the first stars christened by Willson with unique names. %0D %0D The names got progressively wackier with the years; Rock and Tab gave way to Troy, culminating in Ty Hardin. I know I'm missing a few good ones in between.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 22, 2011 4:54 AM |
Are there any pics of Guy Madison in his later years? It would be interesting to see how he aged. He died in 1996.%0D %0D In his youth he was one of the most gorgeous men who ever worked in Hollywood. He was prettier than a lot of actresses.

Another beautiful actor from the fifties may have been the most beautiful of them all: Jeff Richards. Does anyone else remember him? He was the second oldest brother, after Howard Keel, in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It's funny, but Jeff, Guy, and Rory were all born in 1922. That fact should be in schoolbooks.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 22, 2011 5:39 AM |
R54, Guy Madison was still hot when he aged, Wow! R55, I agree with you. Jeff Richards was a major hunk! Also, Clint Walker and John Gavin were both extremely amazing! and gorgeous studs!

There are people on here who are not 70 years old and maybe they would like to participate in this thread. The whole point of coming to a gossip site like DL is to enagage in conversation. Of course, most of the questions that are posed here could be answered by researching the internet, but then why come here? It's about sharing opinions and answers.%0D %0D Jeff Richards also played Buck Winston in The Opposite Sex, MGM's less than successful musical of The Women. So between that and 7 Brides, MGM must have had a lot invested in him . He was the only 7 Brides brother who couldn't sing or dance at all and just sits out the numbers on the sidelines...but he sure looked the best in his long johns.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 22, 2011 1:33 PM |
That story of him getting pounded by Rory Calhoun in a car in the Wilson book was so damn hot! Especially the rocking car detail that Madison was a pro at bottoming because Calhoun was huge and Madison clearly had no problem getting pounded.

Guy's film debut in the 1944 epic tear jerker "Since You Went Away"...starring Claudette Colbert,Joseph Cotten,Robert Walker,Jennifer Jones,Shirley Temple and Hattie McDaniel....as "Fidelia"
Now I have no idea if the director was gay but SOMEBODY sure wanted to present Guy as a glamorous sex object....complete with angelic close-ups and Vaseline on the lens. His beauty shots rival those of Colbert's and Jones'!
Is it just me or does this scene not drip with bisexual subtext?
by Anonymous | reply 92 | January 16, 2014 3:34 AM |
R92, those scenes were written specifically to give film audiences an introductory sneak peek at Guy Madison.
Like the sailor he plays, he was on his way out of town to serve in the armed forces. When he returned to Hollywood after the war, he discovered that the film had made him a hot commodity, and that a movie career was awaiting him.

One of Rory's ex-wives was Lita Baron who you will remember for her guest appearance in an "I Love Lucy" episode. Fred plays a taxi driver who is taking her to the night club by way of "Piladelphia."

by Anonymous | reply 104 | September 7, 2016 9:06 PM |
MASSACRE RIVER is a good film. And it has a wonderful sequence early on where Guy and Rory are told that there's a bath of hot water waiting for whoever gets there first. Cue them both manhandling each other as they race to the tub, climbing over each other, pulling their clothes off as they go. Rory gets there first and then pulls Guy into the bath with him. Later on Guy is shown having his own bath, while Rory and another dude are chatting away with him. The camera does seem to linger on him as he soaps up his lush body...

Madison almost has a James Dean thing going on in that clip.. If he hd been born a bit later and had made his film debut in 1954 instead of 1944 he probably would have had quite a different career.
His son Roberto is an actor in Italy. He did not inherit his fathers looks.

I just watched TILL THE END OF TIME, which is pretty good. Guy is the star of the film, but his acting ability is, well... limited. Not that it matters. Robert Mitchum is the real star. There's a scene on a beach where Guy's just wearing trunks, but for some baffling reason it's filmed in near darkness. Johnny Sands is also in the film, in a small role. He's the actor who is in the scene posted upthread in MASSACRE RIVER. And, like Guy and Rory, he was another one of Henry Willson's discoveries.
I was trying to date the picture below, which I love. Also, who are the two actresses accompanying Guy and Rory there? Someone in the recent Gail Russell thread said the actress on the right is Deanna Durbin, but I think it looks more like Rhonda Fleming (another Willson discovery), who appeared alongside Rory in ADVENTURE ISLAND in 1947. The actress in the left is supposedly Cathy Downs, who starred alongside them both in MASSACRE RIVER, filmed in 1948. Anyway, it's a lovely picture....
by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 12, 2016 7:15 PM |
Only on DL could there be a thread about Guy Madison.
And only on DL could that thread about Guy Madison have a side-car about china.

Here's a photo of Rory and Cathy Downs at Ciro's in March 1946. I read that Guy Madison started seeing (or being seen with) Cathy on New Years Eve of that year. Apparently because Gail Russell was in New York at the time, but was he really seeing Gail as early as '46? I guess these photos and stories of young actors out with young actresses from the same agencies and studios was all obviously part of the business. It's interesting that here you have Rory with Cathy Downs in March 1946 and Guy is connected to her nine months later, and all three make a film together in 1948. I would place the photo above of Rory, Guy, Cathy and Rhonda Fleming at somewhere around 1947....

r130 That's incredible considering it was shot 70 years ago!
I just watched 5 AGAINST THE HOUSE (1955) with Guy and Kim Novak. It was apparently an influence on Scorsese's CASINO and it's a casino heist movie that predates OCEAN'S 11. His looks are just starting to mature at this point, but he's still gorgeous and his beautifully warm, shy smile remains intact. His acting is much improved in the 10 years since his first movie, too. Not a great film but enjoyable....
by Anonymous | reply 131 | September 15, 2016 5:26 PM |
Looking at the trailer for 5 AGAINST THE HOUSE, you can see why Madison's career fizzled as he got older. He's still young at 33 and still handsome but the boyishness that made him a standout is gone. He looks sort of slight, like a scrawny version of Bill Holden.

r132 I agree. It is surprising how early he began to lose his youthful luster. It's noteworthy that EAST OF EDEN came out in 1955. Guy was only 9 years older than James Dean but he looks like the old guard by this point. The one film of his I want to see more than any other is THE BEAST OF HOLLOW MOUNTAIN, which he made a year later. It's a "weird western" co-starring a dinosaur!

Rory was mainly a B-movie star, often out west, his best known now are those Fox Monroe vehicles RIVER OF NO RETURN (where Mitchum is the lead() and HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE where he is teamed with Betty Grable. Guy had a better career, HILDA CRANE with Jean Simmons is good in 1956, one of the first movies I saw as a kid was his 1954 western THE COMMAND. He is so hot in that clip from SINCE YOU WENT AWAY - presumably thats his whole role in the film. A sailor looking that that would have got lots of action,

r141 Wow, that's fantastic. I just found this entry in a book about Ciro's:
[quote]French cuisine by chef Rene Milesi was featured at Ciro’s. A full course meal at Ciro’s cost between $3.75 and $5, and most drinks were $1. Guests who had special food preferences include the following: Errol Flynn (octopus), Diana Lynn (fried chicken), Rory Calhoun (rare prime rib), Lana Turner (seafood). Lizabeth Scott (pheasant), and Peter Lawford (calf’s liver and bacon). Sonja Henie was known to make coffee with her personal formula of salt and eggshells; Jimmy Durante was known to prepare veal scallopini; and Keenan Wynn would sometimes prepare a whole meal.
Rare prime rib! I wonder what Guy's preferences were. In that photo of him and Gail there are three drinks on their table. I wonder who they were dining with.

From Rory Calhoun's bio: At age thirteen, he stole a revolver, for which he was sent to the California Youth Authority's Preston School of Industry reformatory at Ione, California. He escaped while in the adjustment center (jail within the jail). After robbing several jewelry stores, he stole a car and drove it across state lines. This made it a federal offense, and when he was recaptured, he was sentenced to three years in prison. He served his sentence at the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. After finishing his sentence, he was transferred to San Quentin prison on other charges. He remained there until he was paroled shortly before his twenty-first birthday.

Guy Madison was a completely manufactured Hollywood star. Robert Moseley (1922-1996) was a former California lifeguard working as a telephone lineman when he answered his nation’s call by enlisting in the Coast Guard at the onset of WWII. During a weekend leave in 1943 Moseley attended a broadcast of a Lux Radio Theater program, where he was spotted by Henry Willson, then a talent scout for David O. Selznick. Selznick was looking for an unknown to play a sailor in a cameo role in a new film, Since You Went Away. Willson spotted the spectacularly handsome soldier among the audience and thought he looked terrific in his uniform. Turns out he looked even better without it.
With no experience, training or ambition to be an actor, Moseley was signed as an extra. He completed his scene while on a weekend pass and returned to duty. When the big-budget war epic was released in 1944, Selznick’s studio received thousands of fan letters for the unknown actor. Three minutes of on-screen time had in fact elicited 43,000 pieces of fan mail. Willson thought Robert Moseley too lackluster a name, so he created the more tantalizing moniker Guy Madison, who thus joined Henry’s stable of male stars whose physical appeal transcended lack of talent.
So long as he kept his shirt off, Madison’s public was more than happy to buy tickets to his movies. His unselfconscious screen persona, shy smile and mind-altering good looks delivered him to the very peak of the 1950s beefcake craze. His wooden acting, however, sent him straight into the arms of television, where he became a household name as the star of The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, a startlingly successful TV series that ran from 1951 to 1958.
You might want to know that subsequent lack of work led Madison to Europe, where he starred in a string of spaghetti westerns and B-grade German adventure films for ten years.
Genetic evidence that beauty is inherited, as revealed in this photo of Madison's only son Roberto (born 1967 in Rome), who is today a major star of Italian television.

Even if they were just good friends did male stars like Guy and Rory spend so much time together ? of course they were in the same second tier level of stardom, and both clients of Henry and stable of boys, so would have mixed a lot, like frequent Fox co-stars Robert Wagner and Jeff Hunter. Other couples come to mind: Cary and Randolph, Tab and Tony Perkins. There was also Charles Farrell and Johnny Mack Brown back in the silent days, and Tyrone Power was great pals with Cesar Romero ...... so maybe there was more of this buddy stuff going on than we realised, in that very bisexual town.

It wouldn't have been fun being a gay client of Henry Willson. He would not allow two guys to even go to a restaurant together - there had to be a third one along, so they did not look like a couple; and he certainly wouldn't allow two guys to live together. Maybe thats why the likes of Guy and Rory had their marriages to pose with, in between their fishing trips. And of course even a big star like Rock Hudson had to go through that fake marriage for a year or so, with Willson's secretary, Phyllis - who was maybe a lesbian.
I presume the story of Guy and Rory in the car is true ....?
by Anonymous | reply 207 | September 19, 2016 9:59 AM |
Another interesting Willson story is he tried to get his hands on the young Alain Delon at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival. Delon was beyond cute then and eager to get into movies. Willson wanted to sign him and get him to Hollywood, but Delon wisely resisted and left Hollywood till later., when he was a big star in France. Rock Hudson though is quoted as saying Delon had a tiny dick - how did he know? Rock was in EUrope then, filming A Farewell To Arms in Italy, so may well have been present when Henry was "interviewing" Alain ....

Men like Madison and Calhoun weren't gay. If you want to call them Bi...fine.
Madison fathered 4 kids...the last one long after his Hollywood career was over. He had 2 marriages and then an affair with Italian actress Gia Scala.
The same with Calhoun. He had 5 kids.... and I'm sure he didn't have them to cover up anything.
From wikipedia:
"When Lita Baron sued Calhoun for divorce, she named Betty Grable as one of 79 women with whom he had adulterous relationships. Calhoun replied to her charge, "Heck, she didn't even include half of them".
"In 1966, Vitina Marcus filed a paternity suit against Calhoun. Both actors were married at the time. The suit was settled in Los Angeles Superior Court for an undisclosed sum."

r214 Have you seen the Coen brothers' HAIL CAESAR? George Clooney's character in that goes on and on about the multitudes of women he's slept with. It's later revealed that he had sex with Ralph Fiennes's character early in his career. The vast majority of people watching the film will recognize Clooney's claims of how many women he's slept with as classic over-compensation. The Coens knew the type of person they were writing about and the signals it sent to the audience.
One could equally roll ones eyes at the idea that because a man has had several wives and sired children he can't possibly be gay. How many gay men, particularly pre-Stonewall, went out of their way to convince themselves they must be straight or bisexual? It's probably very common even today...

Calhoun's wife obviously had to have evidence. And in divorce cases of that type, detectives are hired.

No, but are you seriously suggesting gay men have never had more than one child with a woman? Anthony Perkins had two children. So did Oscar Wilde, for God's sake. If a gay man can have two children with a woman, why not five?
[quote]Calhoun's wife obviously had to have evidence. And in divorce cases of that type, detectives are hired.
How does one get evidence of 79 sexual affairs? It's practically impossible. You need evidence if your claims are contested, but it's obvious that Rory never denied the affairs because he goes out of his way to let everyone know that he's slept with far more. Over-compensation. And if they were such pussyhounds how come the vast majority of photographs of them both on dates with women are with actresses that were represented by Henry Willson?
It's quite possible neither of these guys was straight or bisexual. Get over it. x

[quote]Sailor Guy Madison basks in the sunshine of the beach at Santa Monica and the sunny attention of Vanguard starlets Rhonda Fleming and Cindy Garner. Guy reports that this is a real sailor's leave. Rhonda will soon be seen in an important dramatic role in Alfred Hitchcock's "Spellbound," Guy won motion picture critic's praise for his portrayal of a sailor in David O. Selznick's "Since You Went Away," and Cindy was one of the glamorous and seductive "sugars" in the same picture.
There's a picture posted upthread of Guy attending the premiere of SPELLBOUND and another of Rory accompanying Lana Turner (another Henry Willson star) to same. Apparently, Hitchcock made a comment about Lana and Rory at that premiere which was reported in the papers the next day, turning Rory into a star. SPELLBOUND was produced by David O' Selznick.

While those high-waisted styles may look hideously unflattering to us now, they did appear to lengthen the leg and minimize the waist (as they're theoretically worn at the smallest part of the waist), which was particularly important in wide-legged trousers.
It's all about proportion, fellas!

There's no bigger fan of young Guy than me and yet there are so many beautiful shirtless photos of him on this thread I've never seen before. I could look at them all day.
My early childhood memory of him as Wild Bill Hickock was as a very ordinary person. Even as a young gayling he did nothing for me. It wasn't until I grew up and saw Guy as a male starlet in those post WWII movies that I realized how hot he once was.

Evidence that Guy was definitely into fish--an admittedly sketchy story in Confidential of Barbara Payton's memsahib Franchot Tone following her and Guy to a motel and crashing in on them in flagrante delicto. Barbara Payton has to be one of the more tragic stories in Hollywood history, her final few years not a million miles away from those of Gail Russell. The thing is, the story was incredibly damaging to all three. So who told Confidential the story?
by Anonymous | reply 256 | September 20, 2016 8:31 AM |
That was in 1951, by the way. The year Guy made DRUMS IN THE DEEP SOUTH with Barbara Payton. And he made HONEYMOON with Franchot Tone four years earlier.

You're right, I'm pretty sure it's from 1948. I'm not sure whether most of the photos in Physique Pictorial would have been new photos or a mix of old and new. Apropos of nothing, here's another "physique" magazine from 1960 that I came across (not Guy Madison)....

No leading man back then could be seen to be gay or would not be allowed to by the studios, agents etc. Even a big star like Rock Hudson had to toe the line and do that sham marriage to quell any gossip about him, so lesser stars like Guy and Rory if they were bisexual, would obviously marry, some more than once, to keep the fan magazines happy with speads on their happy family life.
How the writers came up with stories about them. Here is how one English fan magazine explained the failure of Rock and Phyllis in 1958 - she was TOO EXTRAVAGANT ! Lets quote some of this deathless prose: "But, unfortunately, harmony did not reign in their mountain-side home for long. Soon the rumours started - Rock and Phyllis were not hitting it off so well. The marriage was cracking. Hollywood know-alls said the trouble stemmed from Phyllis's extravagance. It was true that she loved to go shopping. And after all, why not, when Rock had so much money? One night, Rock came home tired and hungry, from an exhuasting day at the studio. He pushed open the door. No Phyllis. He went through the house calling for her and at last he found her in the bedroom, trying on a black chiffon evening dress. She turned to him with stars in her eyes. "Look at it Rock" she cried. "Isn't it just the most stunning gown you ever saw?" Rock raised a hand to his brow. "Wait a minute" he said, "you bought an evening gown last week. You haven't even worn it yet, and now this today". The stars faded from Phyllis's eyes ... "But honey, don't you understand, soon I shall wear both of them. When we go out in public again". "I've told you before", Rock stormed, "I don't want us to start dragging round to nightclubs and premieres". And so such a comparatively small thing as a new evening dress started off a first-class row. It sparked off the other major difference between them. Phyllis liked the do the Town occasionally. Rock preferred to stay at home. Perhaps he liked to have the chance because his film commitments so often took him away from home. When he went to Europe to make A FAREWELL TO ARMS it was understood that Phyllis would join him. They both looked forward to this immensely for it would mean a second honeymoon. And then a couple of weeks before Phyllis was due to leave for Italy, Rock received a letter. "Rock, darling, I've just rented a beautiful house at Malibu Beach for us both. You can swim all day long ...! Rock was furious. He rushed to the phone. As soon as he heard her voice, he started to storm. "Phyllis, its me, Rock. Now what do you mean by renting a house without even consulting me?" Phyllis's voice was cajoling at the other end of the line. "But, honey, its the loveliest house you ever saw. You'll adore it..." Rock's voice was grim. "I'm not taking any house I haven't seen. Why didn't you consult me? I am the man in this family." Phyllis's voice rose. "And I'm a grown woman. Why do I have to ask your permission for everything? A house is a woman's business. All I did was -" Finally, they hung up on each other. Rows at home were bad enough, but rowing with thousands of miles between them - this was disastrous. It was also the beginning of the end ......" There are pages more in in that vein. There was also a "vivacious" script girl named Betty Abbott whom Rock was captivated by, if Betty ever existed - they certainly deserve an award for artistic licence! Other stories in this fan mag are fictional accounts of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh at home, and Montgomery Clift's impossible love for Elizabeth Taylor, with lots of juicy dialogue scenes ! Its priceless.

Maybe he was attracted to the woman. Or maybe he wasn't, but he was horny and hadn't slept with a man in a while. So he made do. The world is full of men sleeping with partners they have zero sexual interest in, just to satisfy mounting sexual frustration. Especially so in an era where it was march harder for gay men to hook up with other men.

Guy flexing his muscles (aged 15, I think). Isn't it said that he didn't aspire to be an actor/star until he got his first role? Looking at the very earliest shots of him, where he's like the classic beefcake build, you get the impression that he was aiming for a life in that direction long before he met Henry Willson. Yes, That's what he's saying. The prison metaphor is a howler.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | September 21, 2016 9:28 AM |
r291 It wasn't a metaphor. It was an example of how men can and do screw around with members of a sex they wouldn't otherwise sleep with when there's little to no other choice. It happens. Guy would have had plenty of opportunities with women, but at that time and in a foreign country, opportunities with men would have been extremely limited if he was overly cautious. It's a perfectly reasonable hypothesis if you've had any experience of life. Grow up, love. x

The only howler in this thread is the continual suggestion that any man who - pre-Stonewall - had sex with multiple women, got married and sired several children - absolutely cannot have been gay. It's a fantasy world.

You know nothing about post war Italy. A middle class American with dollars would have been wealthy here. (yes, I'm actually writing from Italy where I live). And if you've ever read anything by Gore Vidal, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote...Italy was the place for easy man-on-man sex.
The idea that Guy Madison, who by then was practically a nobody in the US and only nominally known in Italy, would have problems finding opportunities for gay sex and have to turn to women is HILARIOUS.
[quote]And yet, here you are, bristling at the mere mention of such a possibility. Ho hum.
Of course it's a "possibility". But you are talking about it as if it's the truth. Warren Beatty, Paul Newman, Sean Connery, Jack Lemon, Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, Jerry Lewis... hey, they could have been gay too.

He was a household name in the US and in any country around the world that WILD BILL HICKOK was shown. You'll notice the gay men you mention were all fugly writers who most people didn't give a fuck about. If Guy was someone who was extremely cautious about hooking up with men and he was away from home, then it's entirely feasible even for today, let alone 60 years ago.

Anyway, as far as I can see, no one here is saying it's a fact that Guy was gay or even bisexual. We're just speculating about the very real possibility that he was, given what we know about the era in which he lived and Hollywood at that time, and what we've read about him and Rory and Henry Willson, etc.
Wasn't Gail Russell also rumored to have been at least bisexual herself?

It was understood by all that the star was gay but it wasn't discussed by anyone in the movie business. He was being protected at all costs.
There was speculation that it was about Rock, but now that we know how many stars were still in the closet, it could have been any one of them. maybe even a combination of some of them.

Talking of John Rechy--sad to say, but he says in his review of Hofler's book that the story of Guy and Rory in the back of a Jaguar is clearly fantasy. Still could be true, but it does seem unlikely. Anyway, it's a good review:

There's a big difference with Cruise: lot's of anecdotes from people who are alive, who can be held accountable for what they have to say. You can believe them or not, but there's lots out there.
Not so with Madison. No quotes directly from anybody. No one. Not one. Nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | September 23, 2016 1:31 PM |
r309 There's actually very little difference. Both have a history with women that is clearly largely for publicity. Most of the photos of Guy on dates with women are with other Henry Willson starlets or women he was promoting a film with. No one can seriously look at Tom Cruise's history with women and believe it's for real. Unless you're a frau who's obsessed with him. There isn't that much anecdotal evidence about Tom being gay--the suspicion comes mainly from his unconvincing history with women, which gives the odd rumor here and there substance. There's a story in the Robert Hofler book about Rory and Guy fucking. An insider third party is quoted in the book as saying they believe every word of it. As with Tom Cruise, you can choose to believe the story or not. Both of Guy's marriages were fairly brief. His first was to a woman who was allegedly bisexual, possibly lesbian. His second broke up because he was "too into outdoor sports" and his wife couldn't "join in". And so on and so on....
And both Guy and Tom seem to attract hysterical fraus whenever their possible/probable homosexuality is mentioned on here. If Rock Hudson didn't die of AIDS, I get the impression these women would be posting on here shrieking "THERE'S NO EVIDENCE THAT ROCK WAS GAY!!!"
by Anonymous | reply 310 | September 23, 2016 1:44 PM |
Madison's marriages lasted 5 and 9 years. And his son was born out of wedlock to an unknown woman at a time when his career was just about finished. Doesn't sound like someone doing it for the publicity.

I believe that the "evidence" that Guy was gay is in the dozens and dozens of posed beefcake shots of him.
While these were very unique to Hollywood in the 1940s, is it just our 2016 eyes that somehow convert them to proving he was gay?
All unmarried male stars were set up on dates with unmarried starlets, usually employed by the same studio. You can find many photos of straight and unmarried Jimmy Stewart at premieres and at other Hollywood functions with young actresses. Make of that what you will.

Incidentally, the source cited on Guy's wiki page for the claim that he had an affair with Gia Scala is the 2014 biography of Scala by Sterling Saint James. The blurb on the book begins:

After a brief search, it seems the claim on Guy Madison's wiki page of an affair between him and Gia Scala is completely bogus. The cited source, mentioned above, can be read on amazon and the beneficiary of "her portion of the Screen Actors Pension Fund" after her death wasn't Guy Madison, it was Guy WILLIAMS. Guy Madison isn't even mentioned in the book.

R329 There's no gossip in that book about Madison being gay. That he was pursued by gay men would of course be a natural. That he could have engaged in gay sex to advance a career, that's also certainly possible. Why not?
But was he gay? No evidence of that.

It's interesting that on Rory's wiki page and in some obituaries it's said that his wife, Lita Baron, sued him for divorce due to alleged extra-marital affairs with 70 "Jane Does" (note that no names were given; ie. no evidence)--yet in fact it was Rory who sued her for divorce on two separate occasions claiming she committed adultery with James Allan Trudeau.
We can't link to the Independent here, but this passage from their obituary of Rory is also interesting:
[quote]In 1947 Calhoun started a stormy relationship with the French actress Corinne Calvet. "Our romance was spontaneous and electric," wrote Calvet later, but she claimed that Calhoun's volatile temper cooled their ardour - on one occasion when she had a date with the mogul Harry Cohn, she returned to find that Calhoun had wrecked her apartment. Later, after proposing marriage, he abandoned her to spend the evening with his mentor Henry Willson and, when she demanded an explanation, took a shot at her with a pistol.
[quote]Yvonne De Carlo was another actress confused by Calhoun's relationship with Willson. Writing of a date with the actor planned by her studio, she said, "There was Rory, his agent Henry Willson, Marguerite Chapman and me. Ostensibly I was paired with Rory but it didn't turn out that way. After photographers stopped snapping pictures, Rory and Henry stood huddled deep in conversation. Marguerite and I weren't even tossed a dangling participle to chew on. After a while I said to Marguerite, 'Can you tell me what the hell is going on?' 'Don't look now, Yvonne,' she kidded, 'but I think I'm your date tonight.' "
Apropos of nothing, Lita Baron appeared in a stage show at Ciro's in 1952 with Billy Daniels, the boyfriend of the great Mitchell Leisen.

Why do gay men want everyone else to be gay? I am gay and think Guy Madison incredibly sexy. However, to me it wasn't just his looks, it was his voice too--deep and sexy! --BUT there doesn't seem to be any evidence that he was gay other than the comment in Wilson's book. And that book has often cited for being full of gossip and rumor. To me, it is not enough to justify his being gay. (But he still makes me drool!)

This is such an old canard that crops up every time gay men discuss any man who was quite possibly in the closet.

What do you expect a book about pre-Stonewall gay men in Hollywood to contain? Photographs of penetration?

[quote]Books are written to make money.
And Hollywood personas are created to make money.
[quote]any other people that mention anything about Madison being gay?
Yes, there's two people in the book on Henry Willson. And Henry himself presumably makes three, seeing as he's the one who told the story. But of course you don't believe them. We know that his first marriage was to a possible lesbian and it was very brief. We know that his second marriage lasted only four years and his wife said the only thing he seemed to love was going hunting... with Rory, presumably. We've established that the stuff on his wiki page about an affair with Gia Scala is completely bogus. There was a quote upthread from Yvonne Di Carlo stating that she went on a double date with Henry Willson and Rory and they were more interested in each other than the women.
Of course it's "possible" that these guys were heterosexual. But there's no proof that they were. Gay men all over the world and throughout history have gotten married and had children, so of course that isn't proof of heterosexuality. But if you choose to believe that, who's stopping you? x
by Anonymous | reply 343 | September 25, 2016 12:38 PM |
[quote]And Henry himself presumably makes three, seeing as he's the one who told the story.
There is ONLY Henry Wilson and his story is recounted to the author. Furthermore noted gay author (who was around and actually knew people) John Rechy explains that Wilson completely fabricated the story.
There's nothing on Madidon. Nothing. Zero.
by Anonymous | reply 344 | September 25, 2016 12:49 PM |
[quote]Furthermore noted gay author (who was around and actually knew people) John Rechy explains that Wilson completely fabricated the story.
No he doesn't. He says he finds it hard to believe, that's all. Why are you putting words in his mouth? He also says that someone else in the book who knew the people involved "believed every word of it". The fact that you or John Rechy don't believe the story doesn't mean it didn't happen. You asked for people who have said that Madison was gay and there they are. If you don't believe them, fine; but whether you do or not is irrelevant.
by Anonymous | reply 345 | September 25, 2016 1:00 PM |
Guy is unshaven in the first half of The Last Frontier. He does have some boyishly flirty scenes with Victor Mature, who is the same type of man as Rory, and he refuses to shoot him when ordered to by fort commander Robert Preston. Preston himself plays his role with a soft mellifluous voice so perhaps there is another reason for his lack of sexual interest in his wife, played by Anne Bancroft with a blonde dye job.
by Anonymous | reply 346 | September 25, 2016 2:38 PM |
Nope. NO real evidence he was gay. Why does everyone who is goodlooking and sexy have to be gay? Answer--they don't, and statistically they probably aren't.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | September 26, 2016 9:13 PM |
[quote]Why does everyone who is goodlooking and sexy have to be gay?
Not everyone. Just the ones who had somewhat unconvincing histories with women, very close relationships with men and were rumored by one or more people who knew them to be gay.
What you keep overlooking is that Hollywood stars are a fabrication. Everything that is officially presented about them is a fiction, either entirely false or truth carefully framed to build a particular persona. We know for a fact that gay men the world over and throughout history have gotten married to members of the opposite sex and had children, so that in itself is not evidence of heterosexuality. In this instance, you choose to believe that it is, but please don't mistake your position as being any less of a fantasy or more evidence-based than the idea that Guy may have been gay. Up to a couple of days ago you believed he had an affair with Gia Scala, purely because you had read it on wikipedia. You never sought evidence for the claim, because you wanted to believe it. Unfortunately for you, it's completely bogus. You don't believe the story in the Henry Willson book because you don't want to believe it, but whether you do or not is irrelevant.

Why do we not think Clark Gable was gay?
He had several very short marriages, including one to a wealthy woman years older than him and one to a beautiful actress rumored to be bisexual. He loved going on hunting and fishing trips with the boys. And he only fathered one child in his 50s, if we don't include Loretta Young's daughter, who was never officially confirmed as such.
Clark Gable was gay!!!!

I don't know if Guy Madison was gay but, clearly, the rumors abound because he was so fucking gprgeous, actually PRETTY in his youth.
And in the 1940s, he was often photographed like a female sex object. I can't believe the number of such photos that have appeared on this thread alone. Was any other actor publicized like that in the 1940s-1950s, including Rock and Tab?
And add to that, he was a Henry Willson client = GAY.

Hysterical that Guy is supposed to be sleeping in that pic at r357, but you can see that he is sucking in his stomach.
The car that is always mentioned as being used for the Rory/Guy tryst is a Jaguar. I would assume that most people would think of those little sports jobs and would think that no sex would happen between two big guys in that car. Jaguar also made huge sedans and their back seats would accommodate two or three strapping guys in flagrante delicto.
From the looks of Rory's crotch in that pic at r353, he needed the back seat all to himself.

While going through pictures of Guy online I always assumed these two pictures were the same, but the black and white one was just cropped. Looking at them now I see that they're two separate pictures. He has cuff links on in one but not the other. I can't imagine they were taking on separate occasions. Probably one shortly after the other. I'm guessing they were taken as part of a set that culminated in the photo of Guy and Rory with Cathy Downs and Rhonda Fleming.
I would love to know when and where they were printed and if there were more in the set. Maybe a whole series of photos of the four of them out on a "date":

Guy (and Rory) were not the only good looking guys then - Jeffrey Hunter was just as stunning, but less fortunate in dying young at 42 in 69. No gay or bi rumours about him though, despite the several films he made with Fox co-star and fellow contract player Robert Wagner, who probably swung both ways, despite his romance with Barbra Stanwyck, who must have been old enough to have played his mother. Wagner too knew and mixed with lots of gays, as did Natalie - Spencer Tracy, Clifton Webb and other oldsters were quite taken with him and put him in their pictures. His books are entertaining reads as he knew everyone (pals with Bette Davis too) but he hardly mentions Hunter, they did at least 5 films together so must have hung out on sets a lot, like that shot of them in the swimming pool.

The best director Guy worked with was probably Anthony Mann on THE LAST FRONTIER in 1955. Two classic westerns that Mann made with Jimmy Stewart--THE MAN FROM LARAMIE and THE FAR COUNTRY--were released the same year. Another notable director he worked with was William Cameron Menzies on 1951's DRUMS IN THE DEEP SOUTH. Not a great director, but obviously one of the all-time great production designers. TILL THE END OF TIME (1946) was directed by Edward Dmytryk. He worked with William Castle on1948's TEXAS, BROOKLYN AND HEAVEN. He made JET OVER THE ATLANTIC in 1959 which was directed by Byron Haskin. He was a great cinematographer in the silent days and probably the best interview subject in Kevin Brownlow's superb documentary series HOLLYWOOD about the silent era (Haskin directed the original WAR OF THE WORLDS).
His film choices weren't great, but he did work with a few good directors.

by Anonymous | reply 403 | December 5, 2016 1:44 PM |
That article is curious and ill-informed, although I believe it's true that Guy's cameo in Since You Went Away was a one-off and after shooting it he did return to the Navy without any particular anticipation of continuing an acting career. But once the fan letters started pouring in, he was offered a contract.....can't remember by which studio?
by Anonymous | reply 404 | December 5, 2016 1:53 PM |
I heard a rumor years ago, though I can't recall the source, that Madison hitched a ride back to his ship and hooked up with an "executive type," whose watch he ended up stealing. Upon discovering the engraved name of a notable, he got hold of the man, somehow, and apologized. The executive was magnanimous, and offered further contact, which is supposedly how Madison got into "Since You Went Away."
Even Gable in his early years was known to hustle here and there, supposedly the real reason for his firing of former contact George Cukor from "Gone With the Wind." And Aldo Ray, also reportedly straight, admitted he'd let Cukor "service" him early in his film career.
So there is certainly precedent.

I always thought Guy's voice sounded unnaturally deep, like he was straining to lower it somehow. It's interesting reading the Henry Willson biography that he made Rock Hudson change his voice, as it was naturally very high-pitched. Someone they hired advised Rock to wait till he had a cold/sore throat and then scream for hours. I wonder if Henry did the same with all of his starlets?

Would Guy Madison be considered a "twink" in gay culture 2018 or is he maybe a smidgen 1.slightly to old (say from his late teens to around 1960), 2.way to pretty, 3.slightly to much on the butch side of "twink". Years ago, I read a review of the story of Guy & Rory devastating Henry (who had a huge crush on Guy) with their affair, specifically the famous 'walking up to the car they were having sex in while the rain was pouring down on him standing outside the rocking car watching through the rear window', either Henry or the writer of the review I was reading, speculated that most especially Rory was SO smitten and into Guy and loved to ravish him so intensely, that 'he' (Henry or the review writer) believed them to be in love, deep love for each other but most heavily Rory toward Guy - make sense? Sorry if not. Thanks for replies! :)
