Is it because funny lines are being added so late in the process that the actors don’t have time to process them in rehearsal?
Breaking character on SNL seems really common lately

Some of the most hilarious moments in the past were when they broke.
However, that humor arose because the people rarely broke character. Now, it just seems a bit unprofessional.

They think it's cute.

I remember part of its original ethos was that the cast would never break character -- a passive-aggressive swipe to the cast of the Carol Burnett Show. Similar to Seinfeld's dog at The Golden Girls in that there was "no hugging, no learning."

Pot is legal in NY.

With Carol Burnett, you were on the floor with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman.
Not so much with SNL.

Yes. They have really good jolly-making edibles.

When actor break, the audience laughs as if they are seeing something funny. When you have a show that is not funny, use pre-planned breaking to elicit laughs.

I don't like that they're having more fun than we are.

I loved that Bill Haider could never make it through a Stefon episode without breaking.

I wouldn't mind them breaking character if the writing was, you know, funny.

The breaking replaces the actually funny.

I wish it was funnier

But Gosling has taken it too far. Get a grip.

Buck would never have broken.

Th only time they all broke character and it was really funny when they did was the first Debby Downer skit -- the performers hadn't been told exactly what was going to happen and they ended up all breaking down.

SNL is like the zombies in the last season of The Walking Dead — deceased for decades but still staggering around simulating life. SNL was last funny about 45 YEARS ago.

R17 and "SNL was last funny about xxx YEARS ago" was last fresh snark about 20 years ago.

It used to be exceedingly rare for cast members to break. It was really the Jimmy Fallon era when it became common. Now it’s just ridiculous.

It’s because they are shitty live actors. Imagine if you went to a stage show and that trash happened? It isn’t cute or funny.

R10
I feel as though I read (here?) that the writers would add jokes at the last minute to tease him/throw him off.
