She's had an unusual career in the number of resurgences she has had even though she's still fairly young: she was a popular actress as a child (Little Women, Interview with a Vampire), and then as a teen (Bring It On, Virgin Suicides, and the Spider-Man trilogy). Then she came back as an adult indie darling, with big roles in Al Good things and Melancholia. She got an Oscar nomination a few years ago for "Power of the Dog," and she's been seriously talked about as Best Actress for "Civil War."
So few child actors make it as adult actors, and when they do it's usually because they're genuinely beautiful as an adult as well as a child (like Natalie Wood or Elizabeth Taylor or Winona Ryder). Or in some cases they had to take time off to unlearn their child's bag of tricks and learn all over again how to be a serious adult actor, like Jodie Foster. But other than a year off to treat serious depression, she's really had a steady career, and she's been pretty much a critics' darling. And though she was a pretty girl as a child and a teenager, she was never truly beautiful--and usually gravitates as an adult to non-glamorous , plain Jane roles.
