TWIRL (1981)

Anyone see it? If this isn't DL catnip then I don't know what is.

Starring Lisa Whelchel, Heather Locklear, Missy Gold, and the Late Erin Moran.

Best friends compete for the title of "Miss Twirl" (similar to a Miss America contest with the primary category of competition being (what else?) twirling!).

The real test, however, is whether their friendship will survive through the contest with the pressure and interference from their parents to win.

I saw your thread title, OP, and automatically started to twirl. For 15 minutes.

Which network aired this?

It was no Flat-Bed Annie & Sweetie-Pie: Lady Truckers.

So did we.

I remember liking it as a kid....sort of a spiritual sequel to Smile.

Smile is a movie I wish got more respect as the American classic it really is.

I think because it is about young women, it's easy to dismiss. However, it's an amazing, bittersweet movie.

Thanks for the answer R9.

You forgot Missy Gold!

by Anonymousreply 12December 17, 2019 8:21 PM

R12 Who could forget that undeniable smirk every time she said a line she thought would get laughs? Usually those lines on "Benson" did not get laughs because she was so smug about that smirk.

The theme song is an anthem for the ages: “Just a small-town girl ‘til she learned to twirl...”

by Anonymousreply 14December 17, 2019 8:24 PM

Oh yeah you didn't forget her. Thank God!!

Christopher McDonald also has a small role as Erin Moran's boyfriend (who resents the amount of time she dedicates to twirling).

There is so much to love about TWIRL!

This is my favorite sequence! They don't really know the words....which is so perfect!
