R2, people who are huge fans can buy the actual jersey that the player used in a game for a large sum of money, directly from the team site. It was worn by the player while playing the game, and has his BO on it. People buy them and they are popular with fans.
This particular commercial went where no person has gone before and had a guy smell the jersey he purchased. This action is assumed to happen in some cases, and in private after purchasing, but never mentioned, as straight, sports loving guys would never admit to doing it.
