A perspective on Vivien Leigh 's career

I just realized an hour or so ago something really odd, that I had never seen before. There's always another woman. She's almost always, in fact, sharing the lead. In fire over england and cleopatra, it's Flora Robson, in a yank at oxford, it's Ronan's grandma Maureen, in GWTW it's, of course, O de H and Hatty McDaniel, in Lady Hamilton it's her mother, in waterloo bridge, it's her sidekick , in Streetcar, Kim Hunter, in Roman spring of mrs Stone it's Lotte Lenya, in ship of fools it's Elizabeth Ashley. The only pictures where she' s the sole female lead tanked (anna karenina, sidewalks of London, 21 days, dark journey, The deep blue sea) she interracts with female partners more than any other female superstar of old Hollywood. Thoughts ?

It may have had something to do with her well-known mental instability, OP. She always had her understudy, just in case she unexpectedly found some wire hangers in her closet.

But in fact, we mostly watch her interract with females. Isn't that odd. Considering that she's the biggest box office of all time ? And one of the greatest beauties ever ? She has great chemistry with women, just like Dustin Hoffman has more chemistry with men. Not to say that she was a lezbo, she's great with Gable, Olivier, Brando, Taylor etc. But it's interesting that she chose projects where she would share the screen with other actresses more than with actors. Also it's interesting that she wasn't competitive.

I would have loved to see her play in a romantic comedy film. She showed comic talent in "A Yank at Oxford".
