How's the mood in the UK?

Are people fighting? Is there slapping in the streets? Are you packing for your exit?

by Anonymousreply 60December 17, 2019 2:19 PM

No but the pound and stock market are soaring.

by Anonymousreply 1December 16, 2019 7:04 AM

The Left is still making excuses and screaming about how much they hate the country.

by Anonymousreply 2December 16, 2019 7:57 AM

Is Owen Jones on suicide watch?

by Anonymousreply 3December 16, 2019 8:10 AM

The mood amongst everyone I know is pretty bleak to be honest. We honestly think this country is fucked up beyond repair now. I would love to be proved wrong, but I actually do feel hopeless about the future now.

by Anonymousreply 4December 16, 2019 8:39 AM

Oh and in terms of exit, yes I would love to leave this country forever, but it's not as easy as some people seem to think.

by Anonymousreply 5December 16, 2019 8:40 AM

The Left needs to get out of their echo chambers.

by Anonymousreply 6December 16, 2019 9:01 AM

Marry me. I am Canadian

by Anonymousreply 7December 16, 2019 9:43 AM

In my head, this is all the fault of AYB.

by Anonymousreply 8December 16, 2019 11:04 AM

Owen Jones got very upset when a Labour MP unfollowed him on Twitter.

He's such a sensitive soul.

by Anonymousreply 9December 16, 2019 11:14 AM

who's owen jones?

by Anonymousreply 10December 16, 2019 11:16 AM

Well in Glasgow riots have kicked off this morning, fucking Scots and their independence!

by Anonymousreply 11December 16, 2019 11:20 AM

OP overreacting as if the sky is falling as per usual...

by Anonymousreply 12December 16, 2019 11:23 AM

So basically all the UK Dataloungers are Boris-loving, Trump-loving rightwingers?

Nice to know that the UK is filled with as many self-loathing homos as America.

Sigh.

by Anonymousreply 13December 16, 2019 11:24 AM

We are estatic that Boris is in charge. The only people who are upset are those sore lefty losers.

by Anonymousreply 14December 16, 2019 12:13 PM

The EU are suspiciously quiet about the whole election, I guess they really are scared of losing the UK!

by Anonymousreply 15December 16, 2019 12:20 PM

So let me get this straight. Boris won hugely. Labour lost the working class for good. The libDems posted losses and their leader herself lost. Never known where they are on the political spectrum. The Scottish gained dramatically leading to louder calls for a referendum.

Right? What's it all mean?

by Anonymousreply 16December 16, 2019 1:26 PM

Blocking every right-wing troll I see on this site. I'm sure it's just a few of the same no-life shills bashing their keyboards over and over, but they have no place here. I'm all for a reasoned debate and everyone has a different point of view, but this left vs. right shit is fucking up the planet. Sad! x

by Anonymousreply 17December 16, 2019 1:32 PM

R15, the EU welcomed the election results because they bring clarity and mean that parliament can now pass the Withdrawal Agreement.

by Anonymousreply 18December 16, 2019 1:39 PM

R7 are you hot, rich and hung?

by Anonymousreply 19December 16, 2019 1:41 PM

R16, Boris didn't win hugely but we have an electoral system that rewards the party with the largest number of votes a huge and unrepresentative number of seats in parliament while the number of seats other parties get can be tiny in comparison to their share of the vote.

by Anonymousreply 20December 16, 2019 1:41 PM

R13 I do not love Boris, I think he's an incompetent, lying, bigoted, pompous sly little arsehole and I cannot fucking stand him. I didn't want Corbyn to be PM either really but I REALLY didn't want Boris to, especially with a large majority which means they can do pretty much whatever they want.

What I don't think a lot of people have seemed to grasp is that a huge proportion of the Conversative party are legtimately evil people who are only serving their own interests. This country had the chance to stand up to that, to choose a more fair and progressive society, to look after people in need even if it means a little more personal sacrifice, and they blew it. I don't relate to that mentality at all, I feel like I have nothing in common with that sort of person.

by Anonymousreply 21December 16, 2019 1:45 PM

Voting is bad for "progressivism". Only "smart" people should be allowed to vote.

by Anonymousreply 22December 16, 2019 1:49 PM

[Quote] The EU are suspiciously quiet about the whole election, I guess they really are scared of losing the UK!

You're funny. The EU is like, le sigh. After all, what can Boris suggest as a way out for UK that's anything better or new.

by Anonymousreply 23December 16, 2019 2:24 PM

My prediction is this will ultimately be regretted.

Scotland will leave. I have no idea with Northern Ireland will do but it is likely to be a shitshow? The result will be EU freeflow to the north and south of England which will grow rather dreary and fourth rate...

by Anonymousreply 24December 16, 2019 3:04 PM

"No but the pound and stock market are soaring."

Corporations and Conservatives go together like milk 'n cookies!

by Anonymousreply 25December 16, 2019 4:55 PM

Anyone who thinks Boris Johnson is anything but a crazed fool is as dumb as those who think Donald Trump is a good POTUS. There's no help for people that stupid.

by Anonymousreply 26December 16, 2019 5:35 PM

We're all just waiting for Boris's next fuck up, he lies about everything and frequently gets caught out.

Not such a big deal when he was Mayor of London or Foreign Secretary, but as Prime Minister it will be a whole new ball game.

by Anonymousreply 27December 16, 2019 5:43 PM

OT, but I'm surprised there is not one thread about the mood in France. Usually there are multiple threads about every single riot, and now, nothing...

by Anonymousreply 28December 16, 2019 5:44 PM

A liberal American Dem - but I think it’s proving what a myth the “sky is falling” storyline is. I predicted that all the fear-mongering stories about the crash of the British economy due to Brexit were overblown. The markets response - and the skyrocketing pound - seem to be affirming that view. Will see how it plays out - but I think the screeching of the Left has resulted in lost credibility. “Just get on with it” was a pragmatic, logical response.

by Anonymousreply 29December 16, 2019 5:59 PM

We are so happys that the good Boris (such a good name) is the patriot leader of U.K. now defeating the unpatriot person who is not a good supporter of Donald Trump the way that Boris is. We are so happy too that so many people on this wonderful homosexualist site are from the UK. are supporters of the conservatives who love Russia as all good Englanders should. All hail people named Boris!

by Anonymousreply 30December 16, 2019 6:22 PM

Scotland and N. Ireland will leave. Good luck U.K.

by Anonymousreply 31December 16, 2019 6:33 PM

If Boris is so stupid, why did he win so overwhelmingly? Labour and the Liberal Dems lose and those in their bubble talk about stupid Boris.

by Anonymousreply 32December 16, 2019 7:37 PM

They're going to be fine. It's like the Nazis just bombed them.

They got on with it then too. They're fine.

by Anonymousreply 33December 16, 2019 7:40 PM

As an American I have no dog in this fight, but from what I can tell from afar Boris Johnson might be evil but he is not a fool. I think he pretends to be a fool. I think he's reasonably intelligent and hiding it because let's face it, the unwashed masses hate intellectuals. Maybe that's not true in England but Lord knows it's overwhelmingly true here.

In our country, we have a history of electing idiots who pretend to be intelligent. We also elect people who say they are for the teeming masses but are themselves well-off and (surprise!) their policies primarily benefit wealthy people and large corporations.

Trump is kind of a landmark in that we've had a lot of presidents who are wealthy but try to hide or minimize that fact. In this case we've got a demented liar who's not nearly as wealthy as people thought but he constantly brags about how rich he is. Make of that what you will.

As to Brexit, neither Norway and Switzerland are in the EU and they seem to be doing okay. There will be problems to work out but it's probably not Brexigeddon.

by Anonymousreply 34December 16, 2019 8:46 PM

For the people saying the tories overwhelmingly won, Boris and his other fellow shower of shites only received 48% of the vote.

by Anonymousreply 35December 16, 2019 9:01 PM

Everyone I know is ranging from Gallows humour to indifference. No one seems to think him winning is an improvement, but no ones leading calls for a revolution. I dunno maybe it's that it's Northern England in December and everyone's to drunk and miserable to care right now. Though one of my friends joked that at least in a few years the war with Scotland should boost the local economy.

by Anonymousreply 36December 16, 2019 9:14 PM

What will happen when the economy tanks? To me, that's the real question.

by Anonymousreply 37December 16, 2019 9:21 PM

"The problem with practical jokes is that they get elected"

by Anonymousreply 38December 16, 2019 9:57 PM

Why is the left so invested in importing impoverished immigrants? Havent the voters in Britain and US shown that these countries are angry about immigration? Does the left care about its countrymen? The left would win if they agreed with minimizing immigration, particularly from places that are impoverished and/or do not share western values

by Anonymousreply 39December 16, 2019 10:16 PM

The British election is yet one more example of a large number of people who should not enjoy the right to vote, because they're not intelligent enough to make a decision on rationality rather than emotion.

by Anonymousreply 40December 16, 2019 10:23 PM

Very sad about UK.

by Anonymousreply 41December 16, 2019 10:28 PM

R9, Owen Jones's reaction to Labour's loss just shows how incapable he is of taking responsibility for his actions. Once "trans" children grow up and talk to the media about the damage that's been done to their bodies, he'll just say, "If the TERFs hadn't been so venomous, we could have had a civilised conversation about this much earlier and the whole thing would have been avoided..." It's all about his ego.

by Anonymousreply 42December 16, 2019 10:39 PM

I think the postwar flailing to adjust to a post imperial, post colonial, new global order has ended. Britain has settled into what it is: a small, nationalist, xenophobic, Small Power. It is what it is.

by Anonymousreply 43December 16, 2019 10:39 PM

Marry me, r14

by Anonymousreply 44December 16, 2019 10:43 PM

As an American outsider can I just say that - although I don't like Boris's agenda or platform - I can see why he won. Corbyn just came across as so unlikable, preachy, and damn uncharismatic. He seemed like a crotchety old biology professor at a medical school in Vermont. If this was an election based on personalities and presentation, I can see why Boris took it away.

What's happened to the Labour party? This used to be the party of "Cool Britannia" and Tony Blair. It now seems to be the home of every virulent Socialist anti-capitalist hippies left over from the 70s.

by Anonymousreply 45December 16, 2019 10:44 PM

Their economy won't crash but sure there will be problems with trade and such with the EU, at least when the exit truly happens. Brits will then negotiate new deals and they'll be just fine, although I assume prices for various items will fluctuate quite a bit for a while there. However they'll probably find out soon enough Brexit won't fix their own problems with immigrants and such since they'll most probably keep going there. BTW, I have two nieces living in the UK currently. They are probably weirded out by the whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 46December 16, 2019 10:49 PM

People are so horny they've resorted to having sex with animals. My poodle has been violated twice this week. It's gotten so bad I can't take her on a walk. No dog is safe, although people are also targeting horses.

by Anonymousreply 47December 16, 2019 10:50 PM

Is that because of Brexit r47? or Boris's big win.

by Anonymousreply 48December 16, 2019 10:59 PM

Brexit is making people horny.

by Anonymousreply 49December 16, 2019 11:02 PM

The Civil Service run the UK, Politicians are just given enough rope to hang themselves. It makes very little difference over say 20 years which party is in power.

by Anonymousreply 50December 16, 2019 11:42 PM

The majority of PMs the UK has had wee conservative. It’s not a liberal country. You had an entire generation grow up under Blair and Brown. They have no concept of British government which has been conservative led for centuries. Labour getting in was abnormal to begin with. They had to go neoliberal to win (ie New Labour). This idea that Britain was some socialist haven was absurd. Boris fits the history of British politics to a t.

by Anonymousreply 51December 17, 2019 12:14 AM

The last Labour government(s) were almost indistinguishable from the John Major Tory government that they replaced. Jeremy Corbyn tried to revive 'old Labour' and failed.

The most successful (and well regarded) Prime Minster's change very little.

by Anonymousreply 52December 17, 2019 12:22 AM

[quote]The last Labour government(s) were almost indistinguishable from the John Major Tory government that they replaced. Jeremy Corbyn tried to revive 'old Labour' and failed.

That's complete and utter bullshit.

The Blair/Brown Labour government transformed public services and the lives of the poorest during the 13 years in government. They were far from perfect but their achievements on NHS and education funding and tax reforms that benefited the poorest and most vulnerable are completely at odds with what Tory governments have done.

In 2001, 4 years after Labour came into government, I had to attend the haematology department at my local hospital. I waited 2 hours for my appointment, sitting in the waiting room on a broken office chair next to a bucket catching drips from the ceiling while a woman had chemotherapy in the corner of the room.

I had to go back for blood tests every 3 months for the last 5 years and the service was transformed - it was moved to a newly renovated part of the hospital, fit for purpose where patients could have chemo away from a waiting room with comfortable chairs, where patients only had to wait 10-15 minutes max because the unit was staffed to safe levels.

It took 8 years for Labour to repair the damage done by 18 years of Tory government.

When anyone says "Blair was just a Tory" they're talking out their shitty arsehole and need a good wipe clean.

by Anonymousreply 53December 17, 2019 9:00 AM

Sad news darlings. The point — the very POINT — of fat bottomed gobby- vowelled DL luvvie Owen Jones was questioned today. I know: heart wrenching!

A journalist — I employ the term loosely — published a piece at Unherd which deigned to suggest that Owen’s propandeese on behalf of The Light On The Hill was not in the best interests of the Nation — neither Right nor the Left. They argued that it didn’t allow for serious self examination by the Left, and that this was one of the reasons for its failure at the ballot box. It also stated that a number of Left journos were part of a WhatsApp group connected to Corbyns office, and they all coordinated their talking points with the office in a rather Kim Il Jong manner. Has anyone called on Owen to see if she’s holding up and the cats are fed?

by Anonymousreply 54December 17, 2019 9:24 AM

How are things in ’Tomorrowland Will Be Better’ Scotland? The crazed tartan bint has promised some new referendum bullshit to keep the porridge eaters distracted from the fact nothing has actually improved under her reign.

by Anonymousreply 55December 17, 2019 9:30 AM

There is no more UK. Scotland, Wales, and N. Ireland will cleave off and England's loss of empire will be complete.

by Anonymousreply 56December 17, 2019 9:40 AM

In my new quest to lower/eliminate my use of foul language, I’m putting “cleave off” in my repertoire, R56. Yours is literal, but it will make for suitable lowfanity.

by Anonymousreply 57December 17, 2019 12:14 PM

I have brittish friends, they put it to me like this. Brexit, people are tired of it and it is either shit or get off the pot. Boris was willing to shit.

by Anonymousreply 58December 17, 2019 12:59 PM

As happened with Trump's election, assholes are being emboldened.
