What do people think of San Juan as a winter get-away spot? Old San Juan looks charming and it's affordable. How are things since the hurricane a few years ago?
San Juan - vacation spot?

The beaches in PR just aren't that nice.

In San Juan all seems to breathe freedom and peace, and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.

Always the hurricanes blowing
Always the population growing
And the money owing
And the babies crying
And the bullets flying

Vieques beaches are divine!

PR's don't like Yankees and give them 30 seconds and they'll hit you over the head with why they blame the USA for all their problems. Snotty, entitled, lazy and oblivious to the fact that the rest of the 3rd world would give their eye-teeth for the very thing that these people begrudge....US citizenship.
Oh yeah, their beaches blow and their food is greasy.

I was once on a cruise that stopped there. I was looking at tours with the concierge and she couldn't have been less enthusiastic. She said it's just a city. A big old city.
Her advice seemed to be just stay on the ship and enjoy that. It is much nicer than the port.

Hissers aside OP, it's a great quick vacation spot.
You can fly directly from NYC in about 3.5 hours and the airport is close to the city--no 2 hour drive afterwards.
The beaches are fine and you can be assured of warm weather all year round.
Old San Juan is charming though quite touristy
You can also stay at a resort hotel that's not in San Juan like the El Dorado or Rio Mar. That will be quieter and much nicer beaches and you can rent a car and drive to San Juan at night in about an hour.
The El Yunque Rain Forest is also a great day trip (or it was, pre-Maria)
If you're looking to go for three or four days just to get out of the cold and sit on a beach, it's a great spot.
And I've always found Puerto Ricans to be very friendly and welcoming.

^^but the big resort hotels in San Juan are nice -- the old school El San Juan and the Ritz Carlton. There's a newer one too that's happening, the Condado Vanderbilt. And if you want to stay in Viejo San Juan, check the El Convento .

The El San Juan is a fantastic hotel and reasonably priced.

Puerto Rico is fucking fabulous. Old San Juan is the biggest and best preserved example of spanish colonial and Vieques is a true paradise. You're gonna love it.

+1 on Vieques and Culebra -- islands off the coast of PR but quick 45 minute flights from SJ
The other great thing about PR is that it's the US.
No need to change money and all our familiar chain stores and brands, useful if you forget toothpaste (easy to find Walgreens and CVS) or a charger (BestBuy is there too)
Also lots of good restaurants, esp in VSJ

US Virgin Islands instead.
It's sad that just a few hundred miles away from PR you have some of the best beaches in the VI. PR is a rocky island with bad beaches by comparison.

It’s a great getaway from NYC. Cheap and easy. Though I prefer getting away from the city to the west coast of PR or East to Vieques, it’s the only place with gay nightlife in the Caribbean - though that is fading. But lots to do and good food. Old San Juan is interesting - classic old colonial village. But it’s definitely more of a city experience than a beachy vacation. El San Juan and Ritz allow you to have a pseudo-resort/beach vacation but still have access to the San Juan nightlife.
Went every year for 20 years. But the closing of the gay beach bar and the complications from the hurricane reduced the appeal. Lately I’ve just been going to Tampa/St Pete or Fort Lauderdale. Not as exotic but I’m getting lazy and self-Indulgent in my old age - just want a nice hotel, good service, Uber to a bunch of gay bars and restaurants and easy quick flight.

R6 yes, totally agree. Some of the best uncut cocks around. Big and thick and juicy.

R9 The Condado Vanderbilt is an amazing hotel with access to a nice beach next door. The water is turbulent, however, and you should know your abilities. I like San Juan a lot, but it's that weirdly depressing type of city where you walk down the street and one building is amazing, and next to it is a hollowed-out, unfinished cinder block shell. The people are very nice, though the women wear too-tight clothing that looks like it's strangling them.

Take along some rolls of paper towels to throw at the locals. They'll love you forever.

DLers are always such Debbie Downers when it comes to vacation spots.
It's a wonder any of you get past the corner.
