OK DL, bear with me, it's a long story. My great uncle and his wife had disappeared for decades, it was a family mystery. My mother, who lives in the South, finally located the widow, in a small town way up North, were the poor old thing was basically dying, in complete poverty, with a part-time help/nurse as only human contact. Turns out they never had children because my uncle didn't like pussy. That explaining the other. The tiny appartement was FILLED with antiques, that were stolen one by one, by the nurses, so my great aunt, before she was sent to a home by the doctor, begged my mother to hide her jewellry. Her most treasured ring, a huge sapphire set in gold and diamonds, was already gone. My mother came back with ropes of pearls, gold and diamonds, that turned out to be real, (strange given that the old Lady seems destitute), bronzes, and silk scarves that belonged to my great uncle. She gave me the scarves. They are quite beautiful and elegant, but I don't know how to wear them. There is a gold pin (with a tiny diamond ) that seems to go with it. Can I wear them ? Is there a way to tie the knot ? Will I be ridiculous ?
Silk scarf, who wear them nowadays ?

Wear it all, channel Liz Taylor in a caftan, the Burton jewels, dripping.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 15, 2019 9:16 AM |
Talking about la Liz, one of the rings was so big, I was convinced it was fake, it litterally is quail egg size. Took it to the jeweller, was a genuine topaz set in gold. My sister is wearing it around town like she's the Queen of the parade. It's so tacky RMAOTFLOL.

Frame them or have them made up as a luxurious bed throw.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 15, 2019 9:21 AM |
In answer to the last but most important question: Yes.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 15, 2019 9:24 AM |
What R1 said.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 15, 2019 9:27 AM |
Frame them ? Really ? Is that a thing ?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 15, 2019 9:28 AM |
Yes, OP, framing is a thing - as a single or in themed group of three or five. Professional framing is expensive but you can do it yourself by fixing them onto ready made blanks. They make large and unique statement pieces for a fraction of the price of an original or even a print.

Wow R9 OK, thanks for the advice

Hermes still does printed silk scarves for men.
Here is an example of framed ones.

Nice ! Thanks. But mine are much bigger and darker. It's really the old fashioned underrated elder gentleman chic type.

Here is a video how how to wear silk scarves.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 15, 2019 11:35 AM |
Can they be worn as ascots, or are they too large? Or was he wearing them draped inside his coat, the way you would wear a knit scarf?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 15, 2019 11:58 AM |
This company has some good ideas. They suggest you look at their Instagram account for more pictures.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 15, 2019 12:27 PM |
Wow, one of the things they do is make bespoke linings out of silk scarves for jackets and coats. There’s some really beautiful pictures there.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 15, 2019 12:31 PM |
Sorry, the link won’t work. Their Instagram account is rampleyandco.
They also use them as the backs of waistcoats, and the squares are shown frames. I wonder if OP could have some of them made into tie and pocket handkerchief sets, depending on the style.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 15, 2019 12:36 PM |
Clean your iron cast skillet with them as the silk is gentle enough not destroy the seasoning of the pan.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 15, 2019 12:53 PM |
OP, are they all-over patterns, or are they some sort of scenic pattern? If you can’t post them, can you google around and post a picture of something similar?

I have TONS of silk scarves, and wear them whenever I want to polish up an ensemble, in a offbeat, yet tasteful manner.
There are various weights of silk, as well as different textures, sheens, mattes, and fiber tightness, and weave patterns. Also, borders can be expertly stitched, appearing seamless, or non defined, resulting in the border fraying. I choose which one, to wear, depending on the outfit, temperature outdoors, and the event I’m attending. Sometimes I mix and match, wearing multiples as scarves, or I do the classic flapper look around my hair, or sun hat. If I feel like snazzing up a handbag, I will sometime tie on around the straps or the handbag’s handles, so that I have it to wear on a spring outing, when the weather might cool into the evening.
Silk scarves look fantastic on men, straight, gay bi, whatever. Doesn’t matter. Wearing one isn’t femme or masc. what matters is knowing how to dress well, and appropriately, depending on the event, weather, and most importantly, your mood.
OP, don’t be timid about accessorizing with silk scarves! As long as it’s done tastefully, it works!

OP, learn the draping and tying basics, then experiment.

Here’s an article that isn’t about silk scarves, but it’s about dressing in classic style and buying investment pieces to build up your wardrobe. He makes a good point. Trending pieces will be worn for a season at best, while classic well made pieces will last for many years. He describes a lot of the trendier pieces as being dumped in the ocean to choke fish in a short time, while classic tailoring doesn’t have to be replaced over and over.
OP, Since you’ve inherited these scarves, maybe you should look into buying a few classic pieces like jackets or suits that will go with them.
When my grandparents died, a year apart, I ended up inheriting some antiques. My parents cared nothing for old things, but my grandparents had a house full of high quality antiques. Inheriting those few pieces led me to learn about antiques and appreciate them. Many years later, I have learned a lot and collect a completely different style I’ve learned about since.
Maybe you could use these scarfs as an opportunity to inspire you to dress up to their standard, as it were.

They are all-over patterns, in dark shades of blue, crimson and grey . One is a very large square in purple/crimson and grey tones, with indianish patterns, another is (actually very nice) , a double scarf-like tube with fringues, in a dark violet tone. I'll wear that one easily like a scarf. I never met the man himself. The family thought he was on a witness protection program or something. Because they had vanished into thin air. In fact they were hiding out of shame (him being gay). He had left behind a tailormade cashmere coat that I wore until I couldn't pay my rent on London and left it behind for the landloard when I went back home.

Scarves can help hide wrinkled necks that don’t match your face work.

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, R35. Pilots wore silk scarves in WWII, often white silk.

I always forger how stunning Cary was, until I see him again. Now that's a good looking man, mr Hammer. Not an overgrown boy. Wearing the silk scarf like he was born to.

OP, the OP sold as many of the jewels as necessary to give the old lady the best possible care, right? Because as long as she is or was alive, the jewels still belong to her and not your family, RIGHT?
As for the scarves, well, I assume they have no resale value. You could make them into throw pillow covers for all anyone cares, and brighten up your living room with silk of the best quality!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 17, 2019 7:26 AM |
No R41 nothing is to be sold as long as she's alive, she says she lives for her jewels, and she wants to go home someday. The hospital people came to the flat and took EVERYTHING she had, except what my mother had hidden from them. It's heartbreaking, but she doesn't even have a private insurance.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 17, 2019 9:41 AM |
Update for R41, the hospital sold everything for a hefty sum.. More than they thought. So she'll be fine
