White people who post a gif of a black person doing a caricature-like double take or over-the-top reaction?

I see it from white people all the time, especially from people who think they are liberal non-racists.

If I remember correctly, it started being a trend with a clip of that woman who said, "Ain't nobody got time for that," and white people were sharing it all over the place. Now it's turned into a thing they do all the time.

It's always some cartoony 2 seconds of video like an old Jimmie Walker clip or the like.

Sure, those clips were funny in their original context, but it feels like the gif-sharers are making fun of them now. Laughing at them, not with them, like they're in some kind of minstrel show.

I'm white, and it always makes me want to turn away in disgust. It seems like a form of patronization or cultural appropriation or something equally inappropriate and icky. It makes me lose respect for the people who do it.

None of the above, grow up snowflake.

by Anonymousreply 1December 15, 2019 7:49 AM

1. Generally, GIF sharers aren't sharing the images to be made fun of, they're sharing the images because that is how [bold]they[/bold] feel.

2. This is a race baiting thread that you're trying to start about "digital blackface." Yes, that is the term. If you genuinely cared about that particular issue you wouldn't start this kind of thread "HERE."

by Anonymousreply 2December 15, 2019 7:59 AM

OK, R2, where should I have started it? This is the only message board I post on. I just wondered if it is as off-putting to other people as it is to me. And I wonder what people of color think about it.

by Anonymousreply 3December 15, 2019 8:19 AM

Yawn.

Gifs convey my feelings about someone or something. The actors in said gif don’t need to match my pale skin - that’s the beauty of feelings; they‘re universal.

WTF is wrong with OP?

by Anonymousreply 9December 15, 2019 8:52 AM

R2, Reddit, Twitter or run a google search for "Digital Blackface."

If this is the only place you post on then you already know what's going to happen with this discussion.

I suppose there wouldn't be such gifs if there wasn't scenes of black actors doing said caricature-like double take or over-the-top reactions.

I agree OP. There's something off-putting about it because of the history of the way whites have treated blacks.

by Anonymousreply 16December 15, 2019 11:21 AM

Thanks for reminding me OP. You got to admit, with 66 million views, it's a catchy tune.

Sigh. Those of you so worried about cultural appropriation, could you please stop “celebrating” St Patrick’s Day with green wigs, binge drinking and claiming a cultural identity because your great-great-great grandmother may have come from Ireland.

by Anonymousreply 19December 15, 2019 11:53 AM

In spite of the Orange Shit Ass, it is time to stop the tribalism. We are not black, white, red, yellow, green. We are all just humans!

by Anonymousreply 20December 15, 2019 11:53 AM

OK, snowflake.

by Anonymousreply 21December 15, 2019 12:02 PM

Grow up, people use gifs to show how they are feeling. The race of the people on the gif is totally irrelevant

Gaaah. That's the odor of shit being stirred, isn't it, OP?

by Anonymousreply 29December 15, 2019 12:42 PM

To the people dismissing OP's VERY VALID argument I ask you this question: How many of you are actually minorities? I'm one, and I agree with OP.

OP, i agree with you. Unfortunately most people ares not intelligent enough to come up with a good reply or response so they go to the cheap and easy gif.

by Anonymousreply 34December 15, 2019 1:04 PM

Hm. I really think there's an important point to be made here about how flippant white people are at slipping into "Ebonics" or the "sassy black woman/gay" trope when they want to be funny or make a point.

It is especially suspect when people use GIFs of a black person and you comment on the individual/content from which the GIF is sourced and they don't know who they are. At least pretend you're using the GIF because you're a fan of the individual/content of its source!

by Anonymousreply 35December 15, 2019 1:08 PM

These images make me cringe in the same way that I cringe when some elderly person trots out old racial or ethnic stereotypes as "funny.". Funny how they are aware enough to know that it will offend, and aware enough to know that a lot of people will give them a pass because they have two feet and one hand already in their grave. And yet that stuff hasn't been accepted as "funny" in decades.

Gifs of Antoine Dodson and Rodney King and neck-rolling by Atlanta housewives really isn't colorblind at all - and everyone knows it.

by Anonymousreply 36December 15, 2019 1:09 PM

R33: and those with common sense and an understanding of intersectionality are an even larger minority!

Way to derail the conversation. As if nonwhite gays don't exist. Did you forget they built most of the culture?

by Anonymousreply 37December 15, 2019 1:09 PM

My BF is black, and isn't the least bit offended by them. If he were, I'd shift my response accordingly.

Every once in a while I see one that's been edited to make black people look like old racist stereotypes but that's pretty rare. Otherwise it's just people typing in "lol" on the Twitter gif search and posting what they like.

As you've already been told, posting this kind of question on Datalounge is basically trolling.
