I fucking despise Santa Con in NYC ... I mean really?
A bunch of grown ass men and women running around the city dressed as Santa and so on? It is fucking ridiculous. My friend posted a video of her coming in from Stony Brook, LI, and the entire train was filled with all young white people. White people have the best ways to waste time and money. The lines to get into bars were wrapped around blocks... it is pathetic.
Maybe because they have so much of it with doing so little work....

It’s one day, get over it.
It’s actually fun see to see everyone in costumes having a great time. The mood is always so positive.
I look forward to it every year

It’s lame r1. Not OP, but I too find it ridiculous and a Waste of time. They are why NYC is the sanitized boring dump it has become.

OP here r1. It is nonsense and these people have helped destroy NYC and turn it into a suburban city that feels like every other city now.
Its energy is draining away.

Fuck SantaCon and all those fucking TRANSPLANTS

Yup, but not NYC natives. Most people from LI do not ever wanna live in NYC.

They do this in San Francisco, too. Straight bridge and tunnel types getting drunk and puking all over the city. It's not fun, funny, or positive. It's fucking gross. And so is Bay to Breakers.

All of r10 NYC and Brooklyn friends must be transplants. Because I don’t know any Natives that participate.

This.
Not anymore--at 35 they've mostly outgrown it--but ten years ago all the former frat types I knew who lived in Murray Hill were all in, as were a lot of the Williamsburg hipster crew.

And for about a year after college it would bug me when friends who'd recently moved to New York started to refer to themselves as "New Yorkers"

well a few years ago we had a "Santa" incident in the local high school, a young kid who is black dressed as Santa, guess what the teacher said to him in the class? "You can't be Santa, Santa is white!" So R11, unfortunately for some people, Santa is indeed has a race "factor" in it, and OP's observation of "all white" is very accurate here.

I’m a native NYer and agree that this seems to have come in with the recent (last 20 years) wave of new residents. One thing that’s great about this city is that few people are “from here” but everyone can get into the spirit, and part of what makes it great is the energy new people bring. But yeah...this is not a “NY tradition,” per se. It has come here, like pub crawls, from elsewhere.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 14, 2019 10:52 PM

What energy do new people bring to NYC? Racism? Homophobia? Ignorance?

Some of them, R24, but even a diehard like me knows not all of that comes from outside the city.
They also bring new traditions, ideas and perspectives which is something that benefits any place. And not every transplant from elsewhere is a white trustafarian from Flyoverstan.

How is it any different from Mardi Gras? Times Square on New Years Eve? St. Pats Day? Some people hate the noise and revelry at those events---but it's all been a long tradition.
Santa Con is just one fucking day a year--so get over it. The only thing I would like is maybe more police presence to fine the drunken bros and hos who puke/piss on the sidewalks.
I think most "real New Yorkers" know to stay inside or minimize errand-running during Santa Con.

It is similar to St Patrick’s Day. Similar - if more diverse- crowd. A day for bar hopping in the city. It’s fine, whatever. I also leave the city for Gay Pride for similar reasons - crowds of bridge and tunnel kids getting drunk even if they are gay.

From these descriptions, it sounds like the Daily Mail should be covering this.
R11 is correct. R23 needs to learn to grasp abstract thought. If it's "necessary" to highlight the race of these people to understand this event, then I'm sure he won't call "racist!" when we underscore the races of others in certain places and pursuits. Right?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 14, 2019 11:31 PM

Huh, R31? I didn’t bring up race. My second post was in response to the next poster challenging my remark that racism, homophobia etc. wasn’t the only thing people bring here from elsewhere. I assumed they were referring to white racism from all these folks from middle America (or the suburbs) they seemed to think were taking over. My point was that NY attracts people from all over the world and they do contribute positive things to our city as well. Oh, and that we have racism here to begin with, just like everywhere else on the planet.
Have a great day!!! 😂😂😂

SantaCon is literally an accumulation of all the frat bros and sorority girls of present and yesteryear who gather in a shocking display of white belligerence (for the most part.)
It is only second to St. Patrick's Day in the list of days to not leave your apartment.

r11 those who are minorities are used to having their color be a point of issue. So the only people I find ask this question are white people who are not used to be called out for their color. Instead of calling it out why not watch it happen and see what it feels like to have your color precede your humanity?

by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 15, 2019 10:38 PM

R64: no, but the statistical evidence and disproportionate amount of citations given to black and brown people would hold up in court. As well as the fact that there's cameras recording, which could ostensibly hold footage of white people jumping with no consequences.
In any case, why would that be your standard of measure? Not all racism can be proven in a court of law because the justice system is not perfect, nor does it allow for the reading of minds. While nonwhites know whites are racist based on their own experiences, it only takes a white victim to shout "racist is an INSULT" to turn the tide.
