Many callbacks to the original.
Tammy looks old

It’s going to be less of a sequel and more of a THE FORCES AWAKENS style remake.
Miles Teller doesn’t seem to be in the trailer. Too fug, I guess - and I like him. TBH Glen Powell looks more the the spawn of Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan.

Teller's in the trailer in at least two shots. One where he's at the piano and another where he's angrily pointing at someone. That also might be his silhouette twirling the football.

Other "off limit" spots in the NV general area have a "shoot 1st, ask questions later" policy. I'm sure that the diners and hotels in the surrounding areas will appreciate the boon in tourist dollars. So will the gas stations.

I generally think he has aged well, but probably not a smart idea on his part to wear the same clothes and redo some of the same scenes that he did when he was in his early 20's thirty years ago. It really emphasizes how much time has gone by.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 19, 2019 12:41 AM |
The preview opens with a ghoulish shot of Ed Harris looking like he’s oh, I don’t know, say a MILLION years old. But he’s been thrown under the bus because when they cut to TC, the 60 year needs to look - relatively - dewy.
The whole thing feels like they wrote the trailer first and the screenplay later. Creepy.

Top gun flight scenes were often reuse inside the movie, they at least seems to have invest and filmed some original scenes. The take off from the boat or the plane disapearing behind the mountain look impressive. Apparently they ask the director of the last Mission Impossible to come and help for the script, just like the last MI, they started to shoot before they had the script finished, and were more focused at first on the stunt scenes than on the story...

Face it, most people are gonna want to see the action scenes, you don't see that in many movies. I can't wait to see it.

But Tammy's EGO is all over it. He can't play someone who is not the hero. So far it doesn't look like it will have a big focus on Teller's character, but it's only a trailer.

No. I never had any desire to see it back in '86, or since, no matter how popular it has become.
That whole macho/military thing is so overrated and ridiculous.
"Look at me! I'm a REAL MAN because I fly jets for the Air Force!" (Or whatever branch of the military this movie represents. Does it really fucking matter?)

The aging of these two characters is on purpose. A lot of time has passed and Naval Aviation has changed tremendously. The glory days of fighter pilots are over. The character of Maverick is not willing to bow to that. Everything is about drones. So he keeps trying to prove that fighter pilots are still essential to the Navy. He won't quit! The Admiral is telling him his time is done. This the story that keeps him a Maverick.

What about the Kelly McGillis character? I think I saw a picture of her a couple of years ago and she looks more like Cruises' grandmother now (is she older than him?), but still unfair that all the washed up/botoxed men (hello Val Kilmer) are in the sequel but not the women. Of course Cruise gets a younger and hotter love interest now.
I wish they had done this sequel 15 or 20 years ago when all the men were still remotely hot. I'm not really into grandpa beach volleyball.

by Anonymous | reply 79 | July 19, 2019 4:21 PM |
I think Val even campaigned for a role just as the movie was getting off the ground in the planning stages. He appeared all over LA in his old flight jacket or something. He was trying to show that he was alive and had overcome his cancer to the level of being able to work.
I'm sure his part is tiny in the sequel.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | July 19, 2019 4:27 PM |
Kelly McGillis is also a homosexual. Tammy would probably set up Scientology tents on set and try to cure her with vitamins, massages and saunas.

Tom has never tried to convert either. He hires beards who know exactly what they are getting into.

by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 19, 2019 4:37 PM |
I remember in early 1988, I was living in Austin and a friend of mine was living in Los Angeles and worked in movie sets (yes, she's a lesbian).
She called me up one night to tell me how on the set of a new movie that the two women were having an affair, of course, being Jodie Foster and Kelly McGillis. But the shocker, she said, was the hottest star in music at the time, Whitney Houston herself, had barged into the studio all drunk and yelling at everyone. SHE was having an affair with either Kelly or Jodie and was pissed off to find out about being "cheated" on with the third woman.
It was so shocking! Of course, no one believed in 1988 that Jodie was straight but the other two were supposedly straight.
When the story about the triangle affair leaked out later, so many people refused to believe it.
I believed it, though. And when Kelly came out and Jodie finally came out, added in with the confirmed rumors about Whitney, of course the 1988 story was true.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 19, 2019 4:41 PM |
Scientologists hate homosexuals. So whatever Tammy does in his bedroom behind closed doors, is not something his religion supports. He had Scientology tents on the set of War of the Worlds and Spielberg was not amused. Their "friendship" cooled down after that.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | July 19, 2019 4:48 PM |
And yet, Miss Cabbage KNOWS what Tom does behind closed does and doesn't give a fuck. NO ONE at Scientology gives a fuck what ANY of their celebrity gay members do at all.
It's all about MONEY. These aren't people with religious "morals" condemning gay people. It's just a script to keep the illusion of a real religion with tax-exempt status going.
Scientology's leaders/whatever don't give a fuck that Tom is gay and he knows it.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | July 19, 2019 4:51 PM |
It's odd that Cruise hasn't publicly "dated" a woman since his divorce from Katie Holmes, which was seven years ago. That's a very long time for a guy who's so obsessed with his image to go without being in a "relationship" for PR purposes.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | July 19, 2019 4:54 PM |

Actually most fighter pilots are on the short side. The cockpits are very cramped.
Funny how in the trailer he's flying an F18 Super Hornet, a variation of an aircraft that first went into service in 1978. Shows you just how long it takes to bring a new fighter aircraft into service and how long they continue flying them.

I don't like Tom personally but I do like his movies. They deliver. The last Mission Imossible was absolutely fantastic, a really solid action film that was a nice diversion from all the comic book movies.
Interesting though that Cruise no longer seems to do those meaty dramas like Rain Man, Born on the 4th of July or Magnolia anymore. It seems to be strictly action nowadays. Did the Botox take the ability to emote away?

He was excellent in Rain Man, Risky Business and The Firm.
You would think he would be doing more dramas at his age. But his ego doesn't seem to let him do character or supporting roles, and yet in films like Tropic Thunder or Magnolia, he gave some strong supporting performances.

Tom's skin (forehead) looked dappled with divots in that scene with Ed Harris (whom wardrobe needed to give a turtleneck for such close ups).
I hate that Jon Hamm is in this--in ANY capacity, let alone Miles Fucking Teller. Arrogant and fug. Not a bad actor overall, though. I see the love interest is going to be ACADEMY AWARD WINNER JENNIFER CONNELLY.
It's funny because I just don't give much of a shit about the planes and the flying and all that shit; I liked all the buddy stuff with Goose and the ridiculously homoerotic shit with Ice (and of course the volleyball game). But while that fast-paced jet action was exciting in 1986, that kind of extreme stuff just feels like very beautifully-filmed retread from Air Force vids on YouTube. Think I'm gonna skip this.

I’ll watch it on demand when it’s available. I want to see it - but not enough to go to the cinema for it. Especially now that on demand tends to get movies so quickly. Back when you had to wait 6-8 months for the dvd/Blu-ray to come out and up to a year for cable - i’d go see this during it’s theatre run....but now between having a 4K tv and short wait times, a movie damn near has to be an Oscar contender for me to go see it when released.
It does look interesting though - I just wish I could tell more of what the plot is other than Maverick being old and attempts to push him out of active flight service by younger pilots/commanders. Age discrimination sucks, but as the plot for a blockbuster movie?

What happened with Spielberg r114?
by Anonymous | reply 122 | July 21, 2019 5:48 PM |
Not R114, I think Cruise's issues with Spielberg have to do with Cruise's past attempt to get Spielberg and his wife into Scientology. I can't remember the story that well. Other DL posters probably remember it more.

I think Cruises' Scientology friends harrassed a psychiatrist after Cruise overheard a conversation Spielberg had with a friend. The psychiatrist was a family friend and Spielbergs wife was not amused. Cruise also did not like that Spielberg's wife invited Katie for lunch and did not ask his permission or let him know where they went first. Cruise told Capshaw she should also always give Spielberg a copy of her daily schedule vor something and get his approval for her activities. Spielberg and Capshaw were both irritated and told Cruise to fuck off repeatedly but Cruise wouldn't let it go till they finally had a very public fight at a party.

R124, What was the deal with Daphne Zuniga?
by Anonymous | reply 125 | July 21, 2019 7:15 PM |
r125 I think they (the Scientologists) used her to get close to Spielberg and influence him bc Cruise thought his wife was ruining his friendship with Spielberg. They also tried to blackmail Capshaw and hired PIs who offered information to several newspapers.

Also Cruise wanted a $cieno recruitment tent or something similar on the set of War of the Worlds. Spielberg wasn’t having it.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | July 21, 2019 7:36 PM |
He HAD Scieno tents on the WotW set. Spielberg was not amused after journalists asked him if he thought it was appropriate to have a cult offering weird services at people's workplace. Cruise also talked more about his cult than the movie during promotion which pissed Spielberg off.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | July 21, 2019 7:47 PM |
Cruise's crazy ass interview with Matt Lauer was also during War of the Worlds promotions.

How does Zuniga know Spielberg or is she friends with Kate?
I don't think Zuniga has ever worked with Spielberg? I could be wrong.

War of the Worlds wasn't a very good movie. It was kind of embarrassing.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | July 21, 2019 7:57 PM |
Yeah, it seems that the working relationship was better on Minority Report than War of the Worlds.
Cruise really descended into madness during 2004-05. What happened? Was that when his sister was his publicist?
by Anonymous | reply 132 | July 21, 2019 8:01 PM |
Yes, r132. Cruise's long-time publicist Pat Kingsley was able to keep the lid on Tom's crazy for years, but then she retired and his sister took over. That's when the shit hit the fan.

Something tells me that Tom, even now, doesn't regret getting rid of Pat 😕

Tom wasn't wrong...Matt was glib. He probably heard about all the nasty shit about him too.

I saw it in theaters because a friend had won tickets through a contest and invited me. We both disliked the movie.

i didn't like War of the Worlds either. The characters were obnoxious (Dakota Fanning was obnoixous and irritating), and the cinematography looked ugly.

Haters fall back. Tom is the GOAT of blockbuster pics. This film is gna be amazing. And please stop calling him Tammy; its rather homophobic.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | July 22, 2019 5:47 AM |
How about Tomi?
Also, I'm a fan of War of the Worlds. It's got its issues, but it's a more interesting and compelling watch than most run of the mill blockbusters. There's at least some semblance of craft involved.

I liked the first 30 minutes of WotW, the rest was just mediocre and boring, especially the part with Tim Robbins in the basement.
I think Nicole Kidman was also a huge influence and kept him away from Scientology as much as possible. His friend David M did not like this and apparently told Tommy to dump his wife. Pat Kingsley never allowed journalists to ask any controversial questions about bis religion. Why did he dump her? Too much money or did the church wanted him to talk more about Scientology in public and Kingsley did not approve?

R138 Fuck you lil bitch, we will call him Tammy or any other name we feel like calling him.

Does he really live in the penthouse of that weird condo building in Clearwater, Florida? He has/had beautiful homes elsewhere?
by Anonymous | reply 142 | July 22, 2019 4:45 PM |
Sometimes you should let sleeping dogs lie. There better be a hell of a story in this movie. Tom Cruise looks OLD
by Anonymous | reply 143 | July 22, 2019 4:51 PM |
He was trying to sell his beautiful Co. home a few years back, wonder if anyone bought it.

Hamm recently teased the film in an interview with Collider in which he said, “They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen.
“We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K,” Hamm added. “So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”
Top Gun: Maverick is set for a June 26, 2020 release.
I can't wait to see it!

I'd rather see Hamm's cock flying around in 6K.

[quote] Scientologists hate homosexuals.
No, they don't. They love the self loathing gays who beg them for their snake oil cure for homosexuality which they claim to have. They exploit homophobia and self loathing for their own financial gain and also gain of power over closet cases (to blackmail them). Their "gay cure" is probably their biggest money maker and recruitment tool (and kids being born into the cult).

Grounded. At least until summer of 2021.
I understand the producers' wanting this to be seen in theatres: this is the kind of project that could get lost in a straight-to-streaming release. OTOH, by the time this finally gets seen, it will already be 2 years old.
Here's hoping movie theatres are back by then.

Tom Cruise is now older than Tom Skerritt was when he played Viper in the original Top Gun (1986).
During a July 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Kelly McGillis said that she was not asked to appear in this movie. When asked why she thought she wasn't contacted, she said, it was likely because "I'm old and I'm fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about. I'd much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff."
Jennifer Connelly has been cast as Penny Benjamin. In the original Top Gun (1986), that character is referenced by Goose as being the daughter of an Admiral that Maverick had dated. As of the 1986 version, Connelly was a minor aged 16. Connelly is 8 years younger than Tom Cruise.
