Not best or worse but most overrated: Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. 3 movies and not ONCE was I convinced that he wanted to fuck her. They could have good chemistry as friends or siblings (they had some decent moments in Crazy, Stupid, Love.) but they keep getting miscast as lovers.

Most of the examples I can think of in terms of worst onscreen chemistry all involve Audrey Hepburn. I don't think there was ever an actress who was more poorly matched as she. For example, George Peppard in Breakfast at Tiffanys, Fred Astaire in Funny Face, Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady and Humphrey Bogart in Sabrina.
Best onscreen chemistry:
Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy
Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart in the African Queen

Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint (On the Waterfront) were so fuckin hot together to me as a child watching them on the afternoon movies of the 60s and 70s. When he busts in her apartment door as she screams at him to leave, and kisses her, argh, so inappropriate and wrong but so sexay! MB has this shadowed hollow in his cheek during the second kiss when Edie is no longer fighting back that just indicated passionate tongue action to me as a know nuttin pre-tween. It made me tingle in my bathing suit area!

Rupert Everett had surprisingly good chemistry with Julianne Moore in An Ideal Husband.
Despite the later tabloid trashfest, Jolie and Pitt did smoke up the screen in Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
As far as TV goes, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer really were perfect as Jim and Pam on The Office. On Parks and Rec, Amy Poehler had excellent chemistry with both Adam Scott and Rashida Jones.
I also thought Jones had better chemistry with Fischer than with Krasinski on The Office. Has Jones ever 'clicked' with a male co-star? If so, I haven't seen it.
While we're in Michael Schur's world, everybody on The Good Place has excellent chemistry with everybody else.
For all his reputation as a stud, Fiennes doesn't click with many leading ladies.
Agreed. He can seduce women easily but can’t connect with them as complete human beings and it shows on screen. He was perfectly cast in The Grand Budapest Hotel because Wes Anderson’s films are completely male-centric and make no attempts at real romance between men and women at all (I suspect WA is on the spectrum).
His turn opposite JLo in Maid in Manhattan has got to be near the top of the Worst Chemistry list but in his defense, that movie had the world’s shittiest script and would have been better if they’d just gone ahead and made a shot-for-shot remake of Pretty Woman. His American accent was passable but takes away half his charm so they should have cast someone else or changed the role to something other than an American senator so he could’ve remained English. I can’t believe Fiennes and JLo signed on to what by all rights should have been a Hallmark channel TV flick. You can just see the producers pitching it as “Pretty Woman but with a sexy Latina chick and her saccharine little boy...and a dog!”

Three times I've seen so-called straight actors have enough "chemistry" that their kissing scenes don't look forced and all closed mouth and unsexy:
Thomas Jane & Vincent D'onofrio in The Velocity of Gary - hot French kissing and they both look 100% into it
Ewan McGregor & Jonathan Rhys Myers in The Velvet Goldmine
Lee Pace & Troy Garity in Soldiers Girl - Lee plays a transvestite but under the wig, he's still a guy. Troy did not hold back.

R41, I like Audrey Hepburn in [italic]The Nun's Story.[/italic] I find her dull and sexless most of the time but in that film she has some interesting sexual tension in her scenes with Peter Finch.
More good onscreen chemistry:
Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr in [italic]Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison[/italic]

Claire Bloom and Richard Burton in [italic]Look Back in Anger[/italic]
Claire Bloom and Laurence Olivier in [italic]Richard III[/italic]

This is one of those “one actor is doing all the work” scenarios for me. Phoenix, like Ledger after him, was charisma personified onscreen. Reeves has always been way too detached as an actor to have chemistry with his costars.

John Travolta and Lily Tomlin OWN THIS THREAD.
Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway come close (take that Three Days of the Condor troll).
Robert Redford has great difficultly connecting to anyone, especially women, in any movie. He's too smug and detached. In love scenes he's brutal or not interested. Everyone points to Streisand, but there would be nothing if she wasn't working so hard. Fonda is better, though there's not a lot of sex there - Redford is handsome, but he's not sexy. For me, Redford's best chemistry with a female co-star was Natalie Wood. They were having an affair, so that helped.

I was never a huge fan of either Faye Dunaway or Steve McQueen, but the chemistry between them in "The Thomas Crown Affair" was off the charts.
I loved the interaction between Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in " Notting Hill". Not passionate, but very, very sweet.
On the non-romantic front, two sets of on-screen brothers had the best chemistry on the small screen: Jerry Mathers and Tony Dow, and Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce.

Shelley Long and Ted Danson on Cheers
Worst:
Courtenay Cox and Matthew Perry on Friends. Monica and Chandler were fine as friends, but once the storyline had them become a couple, it was never convincing.
Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Match Point. It was most likely due to the fact that Johansson can't really act, but the actors' chemistry was really bad and disappointing. (And I think I'm the only person who saw that movie.)

I thought the main cast of Hazel had amazing chemistry. The show completely lost all warmth after they ditched Whitney Blake and Don Defore because the new actors felt so cold interacting with Shirley Booth. Before, you could really feel the bond between Hazel and the other characters because of how well the cast gelled together.
Other shows in this vein, where it felt as if the cast really gelled were Alice and Barney Miller. I've been watching Barney Miller again for the first time in years and it's so crazy how well all the actors work off each other.
Lastly, Jay North and Joseph Kearns for Dennis the Menace. Gail Gordon played the new Mr. Wilson well enough but it didn't feel as if there was any real connection between him and Dennis because something about the two actors didn't click the way it did when Kearns was there.

Best? Hepburn and Stewart in The Philadelphia Story. Love the scene where a tipsy Tracey is teasing Mike about being so uptight. Loy and Powell, Bogart and Bacall, Bergman and Grant in Notorious,Streisand and O Neal in Doc, McQueen and Dunaway in Thomas Crown. Fabulous!
The worst? Lena Dunham and any of her leading men In Girls. Jesus Christ, the chick couldn’t grab the attention of any one of them in real life. Talk about vanity casting.
Maid in Manhattan has got to be near the top of the Worst Chemistry list but in his defense, that movie had the world’s shittiest script and would have been better if they’d just gone ahead and made a shot-for-shot remake of Pretty Woman.
Yeah, but we wouldn’t have had the charming Tyler Posey in Teen Wolf, if it wasn’t for “Maid In Manhattan”.
Not impressed with the "chemistry" between Heath and Jake in Brokeback Mountain. Heath gave the performance of his career. But the "love scenes" between Heath and Jake had no chemistry and were all acting.
Yeah. Great movie but zero romantic chemistry. Just like Hammer and Chalamet which is the problem with most straight actors playing gay roles. They only see gays as two extremes: Like a stereotypical straight guy--slob, watches sports, hates disco, misogynist, hangs around guys BECAUSE HE’S BUTCH--but just so happens to like cock (Adam Pally) or the overtly effeminate cartoon character--essentially straight guys thinking effeminate gay men act like either teenage high school girls or sassy Black women (And of course, I can’t think of any examples, I just woke up).
But the point is no nuance. And many of the sex scenes begin with a wrestling match or throwing each other up against walls to show who’s the top.
Not every straight actor playing a gay...but a lot of them.

I agree with some of the earlier posters who didn't really feel the on-screen chemistry in Brokeback Mountain. I could name several of Sidney Poitier's, but how about this:
The Slender Thread (1965), an totally fun and implausible melodrama co-starring Anne Bancroft. Awesome connection and chemistry between Sidney and Anne, and their characters only communicate over the phone. He also has great chemistry with Telly Savalas in a small supporting part.

Robert DiNiro, John Savage, Chuck Aspergen, John Cazale and Christopher Walken in The Deer Hunter. The chemistry between all of them was so authentic. They reminded me of the group of guys I hung out with when growing up.

by Anonymous | reply 243 | July 30, 2018 3:53 AM |
Cameron Diaz had a better connection with Drew Barrymore, as far as chemistry goes, than she ever did with any leading man.
Catherine Zeta Jones had wicked chemistry with Sean Connery in that movie about the thieves, Entrapment. She had great chemistry with Antonio Banderas in the two Zorro movies as well.
Gwyneth Paltrow has no chemistry with anyone.
The interaction between Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in " Notting Hill". Not passionate, but very, very sweet.
Shitty: Hugh Grant and Julianne Moore in Nine Months.
I came here to say just that. Hugh Grant has the most baffling filmography when it comes to his leads.
Opposite women his performances always come out "sweet" and courteous, and nothing more...and how strange for a man with a reputation as a lothario. Opposite men (or boys, as in ABOUT A BOY) he just comes across nervy and at one remove, which is a wonderful boon for a film like MAURICE or CLOUD ATLAS.
His acting isn't even necessarily poorer for this, just limited in odd ways. He is a good hire if you want a very specifically detached, distracted & introverted effect in your leading man. He's not one for intensity.

“The Eagle” came and went, but it’s really a good movie. And the two guys end up together, making plans to get a farm. Great chemistry between Tatum and Bell.
And there’s good chemistry between Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis in “Spartacus,” and between Curtis and Sydney Poitier in “The Defiant Ones,” and between Poitier and Rock Hudson, in “Something of Value,” one of the only films he made where Hudson’s chief interest was his relationship with another man.

Thank you, r259. I’m not even sure I want to watch it because I read about that “delicacy” in an Anthony Bourdain thread (he was invited to a private dinner with about a dozen people who ate those poor little tortured birds whole, even though their species is endangered and it’s illegal to kill them now). Just reading about it made me sad and angry. I hate humans. It shouldn’t surprise me that Hannibal would be eating something like that but ...ugh...any joy I’d get from seeing Mads Mikkleson in a sexually suggestive scene with another man is going to be canceled out by the thought of what they’re supposed to be eating.

Not always. For instance, Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe's chemistry in "Proof of Life" was non-existent; it was as if they were making an effort to not show any connection.

Claire Danes & Nick Stahl in TERMINATOR: RISE OF THE MACHINES.
Unlike most I bought Stahl as John Connor entirely, and in fact felt he did a beautiful job of crafting a tortured heartbroken young man forced into an unthinkable position. I also thought Danes was a clear sharp presence on her own. The problem was their lack of connection when in the same scenes, like they were acting either side of a screen. It's so strange how in a single film two talented actors perform well alone, but not together.
Perhaps that was the point here, though, given the way John Connor and Kate Brewster, total strangers, are forced to cleave together by colossal events without their volition and in a very short space of time.

Michael B Jordan and Amanda Seyfried - All My Children (weird I know but they had chemistry too)
In contrast to the modern Ocean's movies, where some members had chemistry and others didn't, in the film Kelley's Heroes with Clint Eastwood everyone's chemistry was popping with everyone else and it makes that silly film really fun to watch.

Way back in the day, on ‘Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman’, there was a lot of sexual chemistry between Louise Lasser and Bruce Solomon, who played policeman Dennis Foley. The Foley character was very popular with the fraus, but if you watch the episodes now his behavior was appalling.

Worst: Lady Sybil Crawley and Branson the Chauffeur of Downton Abbey, never saw or felt a spark between them. Baffling why they felt the need to run off together.
Also, her sister Lady Mary Crawley didn't have any spark with the guy she married at the end, Henry Talbot. I guess that's why they had all supporting cast running around constantly saying "You're perfect for each other" to try and convince them and the audience there was something there when there wasn't.

This one is a little odd -- but when I catch Leave it to Beaver as an adult - Ward and June had a nice chemistry. They also had a dry, gentle sarcastic sense of humor I did not catch as a kid. June gets some low-key zingers in from time to time.
Tony Dow and Jerry Matthers did have a good sibling chemistry. The whole family played off of each other well. For old shows - Betty and Bud also had good sibling chemistry on Father Knows Best (and were not bad actors). The less that is said about Kitten, the better.

As for Peter Krause, I've watched him in just about everything he's been in, but his best chemistry was with Josh Charles in Sports Night. Amazing show, great chemistry, cut way too short.
Former TV series, I'd say Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett, who played John Sheppard and Rodney McKay on Stargate Atlantis.
Current TV series, I'd say Alex O'Laughlin and Scott Caan, who play Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams on the Hawaii Five-0 reboot. Bonus points is that Caan has pushed to make McDanno (what their 'ship is called) canon. Of course that'll never happen...

I agree. I was sad that the show got canned because it would have been fun seeing what the couple would have done after what happened in the final episode of season 3. I do like that the writers gave some closure in that episode because they had a good feeling the show would be canned. But, that ending would have provided some good storylines for another season or two.

It is kind of funny to watch him in the first season of Buffy now. He really was the generic brooding boyfriend with the personality of cardboard. As good of chemistry he and SMG had, Angel really did not come into his own until after he was free of her and developed more of a personality other than star-crossed lover and a sense of humor. In a lot of ways Cordelia was a better series co-star r for his character because they balanced each other better. I wish more series would realize not every female - male pairing on a TV show has to go the romance route.

[409] here, yet again...
Lots of free-floating chemistry among the leads in Another Country.
Not sure what to say about Maurice--Wilby and Graves had decent animal chemistry, Wilby and Grant shared a kind of bashful affinity. I love the movie, but thinking back to it, none of the pairings lingered with me, although the fantasy of running away with Graves does, and the final resignation of Grant is still more memorable. That moment when he's closing the shutters and thinks back to Maurice calling out to him from a quad at Oxford with the bells ringing hits me the same way David seeing Keith just before David dies in the SFU finale.
Fernanda Montenegro and Vinucius d'Olivera (sp?) had a beautiful evolving connection in Central Station.
In The Shop on Main Streep the old Jewish shopkeeper (Ida Lupinska???) worked very well with the "Aryan" who took over her store. Everyone should see that film. It's devastating.
Agree about the girls in Heavenly Creatures. You could tell Kate was a force waiting to be unleashed.
In Parting Glances, the couple about to be separated because one is going to Africa have less chemistry than anyone else in the cast. The little flirtation in the music store felt so familliar. Buscemi's scenes were kind of OTT and contrived but still effective.
Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane had good sexual chemistry in Dead Calm. He was so appealing that it probably would have happened with any actress (though not with Tilda in Orlando).
Janet Margolin and Keir Dullea were heartbreakingly tender and tentative in David and Lisa.
Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice were lovely together in Strictly Ballroom.
Maurice--Wilby and Graves had decent animal chemistry, Wilby and Grant shared a kind of bashful affinity.
I think the restraint and shy tentative courtship Wilby & Grant played is exactly for what the script and indeed the book called. Let us remember; this relationship was a ‘first love’ for both and a criminal one at that, and moreover that both were young characters played by young actors playing in their first major film. Maurice & Clive had in common a robust intellectual curiosity and a sense of romance, which is enough for most students to fall for one another.
Wilby & Grant were friendly acquaintances from theatre and had even rehearsed love-scenes even before casting (they touch upon this in the interviews I’ve linked below), which adds quite a lovely layer of subtext to the film and a strong warm tangible frisson to an otherwise slightly-tepid relationship. I believe the two characters like each other as much as love, and that the actors got along.
Knowing the book first of all, my reading of the relationship between Maurice & Clive is of two boys who saw each other first as dear firm friends who happened to fall into an inconvenient albeit ‘safe’ erotic infatuation - one which only Maurice in his vigourous curiosity would like to become physically sexual. They care about the welfare and standing of the other intensely, and it’s a fear of losing one another to the ‘Lower depths’ as it were that stymies their progress into a full-bore love affair; at one point thanks Maurice for his ‘decency’ in guarding the secret of their feelings, and for his part never reveals Maurice’s inclination either. There’s a slight teenage desperation and swooning innocence about it all.
I do think they were in love, of sorts, only it was a pastoral and almost childlike attraction between kindred spirits more than the material ‘real love’ of maturing passion Maurice shared with Scudder. I do think Maurice & Clive held fast to the love between them to the end, in the nostalgic way one clings to happier memories of youth and a greener past as Forster might have put it.
thinking back to it, none of the pairings lingered with me, although the fantasy of running away with Graves does, and the final resignation of Grant is still more memorable. That moment when he's closing the shutters and thinks back to Maurice calling out to him from a quad at Oxford with the bells ringing hits me.
This very scene is the only one to ever convince me that Grant is able to act well. I’ve not seen him perform better before or since. But it is an exquisite scene, anyway.

[409] here. Beautifully put, [447]. I, too, read the book first (long after the film came out) and agree that they calibrated their performanes well. The music and editing does much of the heavy lifting in that final sequence and Phoebe (Nichols?) sympathetic obliviousness also creates a poignancy. I do give credit to Grant for projecting mixed feelings, though, and delicacy in enacting such a literal physical metaphor (closing the shutters). He was an entertaining caricature in last year's A Very English Scandal.

I think one of them even told a fan reporter once that the chemistry they had was like that between “soulmates”.

Martin and Lewis - some of their early movies are very homoerotic. They are all over each other and right up in each others space.

That movie was hilarious. Particularly the scene where he is walking her home. Dialog is one thing, action is quite another.

Going back for some of these: Agree that Warren Beatty and Natalie Wood were great together in Splendor in the Grass Also, I always liked Beatty with Julie Christie in their 3 films together, and he and Annette Bening in Bugsy, though they were tepid at best in Love Affair His chemistry with Madonna in Dick Tracy has to be some of the worst Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross in The Graduate made things believable and he and Anne Bancroft played off each other beautifully Alan Bates and Julie Christie in both Far From the Madding Crowd and The Go-Between

Trump is so vile in every area: disgusting fetid body, mottled pink/orange coarse skin, unattractive face, anus lips, a truly horrible human being all around and let's not forget his ugly micro mushroom dick. Kill it!

There was some sort of White House event (in the rose garden?) where they were shown holding hands. There arms were so stiff and their body language tense that it was clear they felt they should be seen showing hands but were not feeling it at all.

Worst chemistry - Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard in The Village . I get that Joaquin's character was a quiet loner type and Bryce played the poor blind girl who he was in love with. But, some of their scenes together felt so forced and awkward.

Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie in Original Sin had great chemistry. So did Kathleen Turner and William Hurt in Body Heat. I disagree about Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal. I thought they had great chemistry in BBM. I've seen a couple other movies with Jake and he doesn't generate much chemistry with hs leading ladies. In fact, for a man who's so physically attractive, he doesn't have much sex appeal IMO.

Here’s my candidate for least believable couple. It’s a commercial, but the husband doesn’t seem comfortable making any physical contact with his wife. I’d imagine that he’s a gay guy, and probably to company owner’s nephew or something.

Riz Ahmed and Kate Hudson in The Reluctant Fundamentalist. They actually had more chemistry during the film's press junket!
Kate in a dark wavy fake looking wig sure didn't help the proceedings, she looked old enough to his character's mother. Think they are actually the same age.

Riz Ahmed also had a sex scene with Rooney Mara in UNA, she has no sexual appeal whatsoever. She's the human equivalent of an ice cube!
Eva Green and Josh Hartnett in Penny Dreadful - didn't see any heat in that pairing. He had better chemistry with the other male leads Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney and the little queeny guy who had a crush on Josh' s character. It was cute how Josh would flirt with that little guy.
Were they a couple in that series? I don't recall. I remember Eva Green's character living in a house with Dalton's character and they were not sexual.
Wasn't Josh's character fucking some other woman?
by Anonymous | reply 511 | June 18, 2019 7:39 AM |
I don't remember Eva and Josh's characters actually getting together, but the second season played it like they were attracted to each other. Josh's character was with the woman who became Frankenstein's bride in the first season before she died, but I don't remember him being with anyone after the fact (but I don't remember much of the third season). I thought he and Eva were OK, but the scene with him and Carney definitely had chemistry, and they never really interacted again after that.

One more comment about Penny Dreadful, I thought the overall cast chemistry was good. I thinking having everyone separated and not interacting with each other the third season hurt the show.
