Dan Schneider Sues 'Quiet on Set' producers for Defamation. 'It was a hit job'

Dan Schneider Files Defamation Suit Against 'Quiet On Set' Producers “‘Quiet on Set’s’ portrayal of Schneider is a hit job,” the lawsuit reads. By Taiyler S. Mitchell May 1, 2024,

Kids television producer-screenwriter Dan Schneider is suing the producers behind “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” a docuseries about the alleged abuse of child actors on several Nickelodeon shows.

The suit — the defendants in which include Warner Bros. Discovery, Maxine Productions, Sony Pictures Television and others — was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, more than a month after the docuseries aired on March 17.

“‘Quiet on Set’s’ portrayal of Schneider is a hit job,” the lawsuit, which was obtained by HuffPost, reads. Schneider’s suit seeks financial compensation and to remove or edit parts of the series and the trailer.

Schneider, 58, is known for numerous Nick hits including “All That,” “iCarly,” “Victorious,” “Drake & Josh,” “The Amanda Show,” “Zoey 101″ and “Kenan and Kel.”

He did not appear in the five-part series, but several former child actors shared their experiences on the sets of some of these shows. The series also showed imagery of Schneider cozied up with some of the young female actors on set and several other clips that appeared to show young actresses feeling uncomfortable in his presence.

Subjects in “Quiet on Set” also described Nickelodeon as a workplace that was hostile and discriminatory against women. Sources on the show said that Schneider frequently required the women on set to massage him.

Nickelodeon reportedly cut ties with Schneider in 2018. The company had investigated Schneider for “alleged sexual behavior,” but found only that he had been verbally abusive to employees, according to Business Insider.

“Schneider will be the first to admit that some of what they said is true,” the lawsuit reads. “At times, he was blind to the pain that some of his behaviors caused certain colleagues, subordinates, and cast members. He will regret and atone for this behavior the rest of his life. But one thing he is not — and the one thing that will forever mar his reputation and career both past and present — is a child sexual abuser" In the series, Drake Bell, who starred in Schneider’s “The Amanda Show” and “Drake & Josh,” recounted being sexually abused by Brian Peck, Bell’s dialogue coach.

Several of the former child actors also recalled being forced to participate in scenes that imitate uncomfortable and/or sexual situations under the guise of comedy.

In a statement to HuffPost, Schneider said that the series “highlighted mistakes I made and poor judgment I exhibited during my time at Nickelodeon. ... There is no doubt that I was sometimes a bad leader. I am sincerely apologetic and regretful for that behavior, and I will continue to take accountability for it.”

But Schneider and his lawyers argue the documentary conflates his own misconduct with the child sexual abuse detailed by Bell and others.

“In their successful attempt to mislead viewers and increase ratings, they went beyond reporting the truth and falsely implied that I was involved in or facilitated horrific crimes for which actual child predators have been prosecuted and convicted,” he continued. “I have no objection to anyone highlighting my failures as a boss, but it is wrong to mislead millions of people to the false conclusion that I was in any way involved in heinous acts like those committed by child predators.”

He has more Chins than a Chinese phonebook.

by Anonymousreply 1May 2, 2024 3:02 AM

I’m stoking up the fire under a vat of grease right now.

by Anonymousreply 2May 2, 2024 3:05 AM

He hired pedophiles and sexualized young actors in the TV shows he produced. Sorry Dan if you’re upset the truth came out.

by Anonymousreply 3May 2, 2024 3:13 AM

He should stage a comeback bio-pic playing Subway’s Jared.

by Anonymousreply 4May 2, 2024 3:14 AM

Discovery on this one should be a fucking blast.

by Anonymousreply 5May 2, 2024 3:16 AM

The whole Hollywood kids industry is gross.

by Anonymousreply 6May 2, 2024 3:17 AM

He want to be more careful re what he wishes for.

Not to mention that the truth is an absolute defense.

by Anonymousreply 7May 2, 2024 3:21 AM

Toe-tally expected him to do this.

by Anonymousreply 8May 2, 2024 3:25 AM

Sources say they are countersuing him for stealing Neil Diamond’s wig

by Anonymousreply 9May 2, 2024 3:28 AM

Of course it was an attack piece, but if the facts are true, I don't know what he hopes to achieve. A jury won't take kindly to seeing all the things he was responsible for.

by Anonymousreply 10May 2, 2024 3:30 AM
Of course it was an attack piece, but if the facts are true, I don't know what he hopes to achieve.

Unless the producers of QUIET ON SET are fools, I'm sure they had lawyers go through the content of the series with a fine tooth comb to avoid any successful lawsuit for defamation.

by Anonymousreply 11May 2, 2024 3:47 AM

“I’m fat, ugly, and I like teenage girls’ feet. Leave me alone!”

by Anonymousreply 12May 2, 2024 3:51 AM

Amanda Bynes said he didn't do anything. Ariana Grande said he didn't do anything. And nobody in the documentary could pinpoint exactly what he did, other than "weird" but everyone in the industry is weird. Weird does not equal sexual abuse and it's important to make that distinction. And he doesn't have a record unlike Brian Peck so Dan may have a case here.

by Anonymousreply 13May 2, 2024 4:02 AM

He’s got a losing case. The series goes out of its way to say he wasn’t being blamed for sexual abuse that occurred. But they do clearly portray him as an Ellen type bully who was creepy with women and young girls on the shows.

by Anonymousreply 14May 2, 2024 4:11 AM

r13 you sound like a shill. Do you realize how many YEARS the talk about him has been going on?

Also, it's frequently been put forth that he molested and knocked up Jamie Lynn Spears. This is not some "far out" theory either; it's been whispered about in H'Wood, also for years.

And Jamie Lynn has never named the bio father either.

by Anonymousreply 15May 2, 2024 4:14 AM

R13, the show didn't say he was a molester, though. So it's not defamation

by Anonymousreply 16May 2, 2024 4:18 AM

R15 You sound like a biased idiot with a pitchfork in her hand. People can't just say whatever they want about someone if they dont have anything concrete, And the fact that you believe that stupid Jamie lynn rumor already makes me question your judgment. Her daughter looks exactly like her father Casey not fan Schneider’s kids. You are another loser who can't be bothered with critical thinking, just emotional accusations.

by Anonymousreply 17May 2, 2024 4:19 AM

R18 They implied it amd ruined his reputation in the process. If read the article it said Nickelodeon themselves didban investigation and all they found was him being "verbally abusive to staff." Verbal abuse and implied sexual abuse is a huge leap. Especially after an internal investigation.

by Anonymousreply 18May 2, 2024 4:22 AM

R18 is for R16

by Anonymousreply 19May 2, 2024 4:23 AM

He displays bad judgement. That wig!

by Anonymousreply 20May 2, 2024 4:32 AM

Again, the series does not say that he was a child molester. They do portray him however in an unflattering light, but it’s because he was a bully and made females uncomfortable. He may not like being lumped in with the abusers, but the series doesn’t defame him. It’s just honest that he is a jerk.

by Anonymousreply 21May 2, 2024 4:44 AM

What a lovely vestigial twin on his shoulder

by Anonymousreply 22May 2, 2024 4:51 AM

He's a fatty, who cares what he says?

by Anonymousreply 23May 2, 2024 4:55 AM
Again, the series does not say that he was a child molester. They do portray him however in an unflattering light, but it’s because he was a bully and made females uncomfortable. I think his case is shaky, but while I have not finished reading the entire filing, his lawyers pick apart the advertising for the docu-series and how it was edit to allude that mentions of sexual abuse were at his hands. One example his legal team used was a lawsuit by a porn actor whose image was used in a headline about a porn actor contracting HIV, which made it seem the story was about that actor pictured. It's the allusions and suggestiveness they feel has painted him in a bad light.

by Anonymousreply 24May 2, 2024 4:58 AM

He bears the burden of proving false the statements made…it is the key to any claim under California. It is a high threshold, truth being an absolute defense.

He’s playing with fire. A lawsuit exposes him to all kinds of embarrassment. And wasn’t he fired from Nickelodeon? Not sure what reputation he is trying to save.

by Anonymousreply 26May 2, 2024 5:35 AM
"He hired pedophiles and sexualized young actors in the TV shows he produced."

Wow, R3. I just watched the Lou Perleman documentary a couple of months ago. That was interesting. But he didn't hire other predators, preferring to keep that for himself.

by Anonymousreply 27May 2, 2024 5:41 AM

R15, Schneider isn't old enough to be the guy rumored to be Spears' daughter's father.

I went down a Nickelodeon rabbit hole one night and posted a similar comment in the original Quiet on the Set thread but here it is again:

CDAN posted this blind item about Jamie Lynn Spears two months before she announced she was pregnant.
I don’t even know how you define what list someone is when they are on some ensemble show watched by teens and pre-teens, so go above, and make her a female. Make her pregnant which is causing the producers to have a heart attack because they really don’t need anymore scandals. But wait, there’s more. One of the producers who is old enough to be her grandfather shouldn’t be having a heart attack because of shock, because he is the one who knocked her up. New boyfriends are being lined up as we speak"

A Redditor made this comment a few years ago:
Enty Lawyer is the first one to ever report a certain producer knocking up Jamie Lynn Spears. Later I listened to his podcast and he said that he wasn't talking about Dan Schneider... it was a producer who was old enough to be her grandfather. There's so many creeps at Nickelodeon you'd be surprised.
I thought Maddie looked like DS too until I saw a picture of [bold]Bill O’Dowd[/bold]. Not a known name but involved with Dolphin Entertainment and produced some episodes of Zoey 101. Him and Maddie have the same eyebrows

The people who participated in the documentary are also suing. The network lied to them about what the project was.

by Anonymousreply 29May 2, 2024 5:50 AM
the show didn't say he was a molester, though.

They insinuated that he was a pedophile.

by Anonymousreply 30May 2, 2024 5:50 AM

r28 - Dan Schneider is 58 years old, he was born in 1966...older than me by 5 years.

JL's oldest child is 16. That would make Dan Schneider 42ish at the time of conception. Plenty old enough to be a father and then some.

by Anonymousreply 31May 2, 2024 5:57 AM
Amanda Bynes said he didn't do anything.

No, she didn't, R13. I'm not copy/pasting everything I posted in the original thread, but this was an old Twitter post:
One man in particular took hundreds of photos of my feet. I was only 13. And one of the main reasons why I may never be able to get pregnant

And this is from an article referencing CDAN:
Bynes has also supposedly reached out to Enty. Writing, “thank you for all your ongoing support. I Don’t know how Any of these meN, sleep at night, but if there’s one thing that I Do know Is that what’s Done in the dark, always comes to lighT! xoxo[…]Sorry, I thought it was clever 😀 unfortch I will obviously not be making any comment whatsoever (for obvious reasons) and unfortch I feel as though the only way that legitimate stories can make the headlines regarding ____ is if others publicly speak on his behavior. _____ was truly like a 2nd father to me. But things have changed. After the 2nd incident, I don’t know if I will ever be able to have children or have the family of my dreams.” While Enty himself never elaborated on the anonymous actor’s message, many people have pointed out that the capitalized letters spell out “DAN DID IT”. The entry is still on the website.
Ariana Grande said he didn't do anything.

She hasn't said anything.

An unknown number of actors signed NDAs that they want to be released from.
The protestors chanted “protect survivors, not predators,” outside the studio and demanded for any person who experienced sexual abuse at Nickelodeon to be released from any NDAs. The group was a mixture of fans of Nikolas’s and alleged survivors of sexual abuse who’d attended previous Eat Predators events. The most notable sign read “Sickelodeon” in front of in the studio’s foot logo, and it included Schneider’s face translucently in the back. Other signs included questions like “Is Nick a Predator?” and “How Many NDAs?” Most of the signs were brandished with Nickelodeon’s green slime.

R28, after seeing that expose on CDAN how could anyone use them as a valid gossip source.

by Anonymousreply 33May 2, 2024 5:59 AM

^^Sorry (not that it matters) - older than me by 3 years, not 5.

Anyways...

by Anonymousreply 34May 2, 2024 5:59 AM

Read the blind item again, R31:
One of the producers who is [bold]old enough to be her grandfather[/bold] shouldn’t be having a heart attack because of shock, because he is the one who knocked her up.

I guess 42 is old enough to be a grandfather, but the blind makes it seem like someone older than that.

by Anonymousreply 35May 2, 2024 6:02 AM

A blind item about a pregnant teen posted two months before a teen announced she was pregnant seems valid to me, R33.

by Anonymousreply 36May 2, 2024 6:03 AM

r35 i don't believe CDAN, so my comment wasn't meant to address CDAN's assertion that the father of JL's child was "old enough to be her grandfather."

I'm commenting outside of their blind. The gossip I refer to has been around beyond just CDAN.

by Anonymousreply 37May 2, 2024 6:06 AM

Schneider has been getting slandered by internet gossip for years. Sure, he’s an asshole boss (shocking in Hollywood!) with a foot fetish, but there’s never been an iota of anything to suggest that he’s a pedophile, nor that he sexually assaulted anyone. But everyone repeated it in gossip for years basically because of the way he looks.

If this were the UK, he’d have a case. It’s so hard to win these sorts of cases in the US. I do think he’s been wronged, but probably has no legal remedy.

by Anonymousreply 38May 2, 2024 7:46 AM

R28 Once again, Jamie Lynn's daughter looks EXACTLY like her biological father Casey Alderage, NOT Dan Schneider! Enty has already been proven to be full of shit. Only morons believe anything from that website.

R32 Horseshit. Both Bynes and her parents refused to participate in the Doc. She said what the children in the Doc experienced was not what she experienced. EXCLUSIVE AMANDA BYNES TURNED DOWN 'QUIET ON SET' INTERVIEW ... Nothing Like Her Experience

3/22/2024 3:34 PM PT Amanda Bynes isn't interested in talking about her child star past -- especially for the doc about Nickelodeon -- because she simply didn't have a bad experience ... TMZ has learned.

Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ … both Amanda and her parents -- Rick and Lynn -- were approached about telling their stories on "Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV," but we're told they all opted not to participate. Our sources say Amanda -- whom we're told did not watch the documentary -- declined to sit for an interview on account that she felt she just didn't have anything to share that would further their cause. In other words, she didn't go through what the 'QOS' subjects did.

On the contrary, our sources tell us Amanda is grateful for what she was able to do with her Nickelodeon start -- as we're told she acknowledges that it launched her career back then. As for her parents ... our sources say they're private people and wanted to stay out of the spotlight for this. Unlike Amanda, we're told they actually watched the documentary and were both saddened and disgusted by the allegations.

But again, we're told the family unit as a whole hadn't experienced what these other child actors did while at the network ... which is why it didn't make sense for them to sit for it.

As we all know, Amanda starred on "The Amanda Show" from 1999 to 2002 alongside Drake Bell -- who revealed he was abused by dialogue coach Brian Peck. Peck was credited on some episodes of 'TAS' as well.

Some of Drake's former costars -- like Josh Peck who also appeared on "The Amanda Show" -- have come out in recent days ... saying they watched the documentary and are lamenting the horrors their costars claim they dealt with. BTW ... one of the 'Quiet On Set' episodes focuses heavily on Bynes, including how she was discovered at the Laugh Factory in the mid-90s -- so, it does seem a little odd that Amanda isn't interested in peeping the series at all ... especially since she's a focal point in it.

Of course, it goes without saying ... Amanda's been through her own personal saga -- conservatorship, etc. -- and in the aftermath of that, it's clear she wants to leave the past in the past and focus on other ventures ... including her burgeoning cosmetology career. Amanda is much more low-key these days ... and she hasn't publicly addressed the doc. Now, however, we know how she know how she feels about it -- and there's no bad blood with Nick.

Probably the same Schneider defender from the original thread.
Our sources say Amanda -- whom we're told did not watch the documentary -- declined to sit for an interview on account that she felt she just didn't have anything to share that would further their cause.

She declined because the mere thought of talking about it caused distress.

She made a [now deleted] post about Schneider on the “Ashley Banks” Twitter account after the show aired. A different post from March 26 is still up:
Why the sudden interest? If I have learned anything in my life, it’s that people are fake, and so many people do not honestly care about your personal well-being.

by Anonymousreply 50May 2, 2024 6:22 PM

R48 She has the same eyes as her father Casey, I see no resemblance to that strange looking man in your photo. Some of you are really sick in the head. It's like you want to believe that an underage Jamie Lynn was fucking these men twice her age. Very strange.

by Anonymousreply 51May 2, 2024 7:57 PM

^^Yeah, r51. You're right.

That NEVER happens. What COULD we be thinking.

by Anonymousreply 52May 2, 2024 8:08 PM

Mmm, boy are you fat!

by Anonymousreply 53May 2, 2024 8:30 PM

The doc never goes to detail about Schneider beyond creating unpleasant work environments. It’s a bit padded and goes on for a couple episodes longer than needed.

by Anonymousreply 54May 2, 2024 11:35 PM

The documentary was poorly done and does link together serious and benign situations with a ham fist. That said, Dan Schneider might be the least sympathetic client any lawyer could ever have. He might have a case, on one hand, but it’s hard to see him as a victim.

by Anonymousreply 55May 3, 2024 12:01 AM

He’s a dreadful man but I’m sorry I love Carly and Victorious. Wasn't Lewis Carroll a pedophile but we love the Alice stories.

by Anonymousreply 56May 3, 2024 1:06 AM

Actually he should sue, a lot of people walked away from that doc thinking that Dan was sexually abusing children. He was an asshole, not a sexual predator. There were times in the documentary when I thought they were unhappy that Dan wasn't a predator. The only one featured in the entire doc with a legitimate story and reason to be pissed was Drake. Everyone else was just pissed because they didn't end up with careers.

by Anonymousreply 57May 3, 2024 1:13 AM

He needs to shut his big fat mouth. Having his female writers give him back massages every damn day. And paying men more and having the women split their pay. He’s not going to get one cent from ID channel. He’s just trying to save his already trashed image.
