Zoomer claims she was denied TJMaxx job because of her head-to-toe tattoos
A woman whose face is covered in tattoos and piercings claims she was denied a job at TJ Maxx over her body art. Ash Putnam aired her grievances in a viral TikTok after she applied for a job with the off-price retailer but received an automated email saying she wouldn’t be considered for the position without the company explaining why.
ATTENTION ZOOMER: NO COMPANY OWES YOU AN EXPLANATION AS TO WHY THEY DIDN'T CHOOSE YOU FOR A POSITION. MOVE ON.

I just wonder what goes on at the NYP if someone's unsubstantiated feeling makes a story that they think needs to be published. I know the NYP has an agenda. They probably wanted to highlight some girl's exaggerated sense of entitlement to make their conservative readers a bit more upset about the world. But still... all this based on a feeling only? Man, they really run out of actual events, don't they?

R8 I believe all companies have on-line applications these days. However, I've been on Zoom interviews and then made it to second-round and third-round of in-person interviews, and gotten auto-generated emails declining me for the positions. So, she may have made it to a Zoom interview, at least.
Still, no employer owes her any explanation as to why she didn't get the job.

I bought something for one of my nieces at a fashion chain store a few months ago and was served by a woman in her 30s with tattoos all over her arms, which were bare. Tattoos are everywhere on a lot of people in their teens to their 30s in Australia. I'd live to have the money to invest in a tattoo removal clinic, as I can see people will be getting them removed and then tattooed again.
Simplicity (and for a while, Butterick) Patterns = used models with tattoos for about ten years now. Their big thing at the moment is more about obesity, though.

Same with hand tattoos.
I work on a college campus and see all of these young kids with promising futures and parents to bankroll them. So many of them have very stupid neck tattoos or thigs inked on their hands.
It is a trend. It will go away. Rhianna will be able to afford expensive, painful ink removal. You might not. Stop.

Those with tattoos, face piercings and rainbow hair = constant, exhausting, personal drama. It's just not worth hiring them (but I don't have final say).

I'm old. Let's just get that out of the way.
I've hired hundreds of people over the years, and I would not even consider someone who had a facial tattoo. Ever. It's a sign of mental instability. I've accepted that you can't disregard anyone with tattoos elsewhere, but damn I wish people would think about what they're doing to their bodies.
On the personal side, what kills me is when you see a stunningly handsome man with an incredible body, hairy in all the right places... and then has some hideous, elaborate art that is a total boner-killer.
The roles have completely been reversed. When I see a man without tattoos, he stands out.

For the past three years, I have had Easter dinner with a friend of mine I've know for quite a few years. She has brought her cute, sexy son (mid-30s) and his wife of the past three years, 'Emily', who turns 30 this year. Emily is quite pretty, great personality and very intelligent (she's quite knowledgeable about everything, easy to have a conversation with). I really enjoy her company at the dinner table, and always sit next to her.
Two years ago, when she first joined us for dinner, I remember she had a beautiful dress on which was sleeveless. Her shoulders and upper arms were tattooed. It through her off. Last year, the tattoos went down her arms and covered her hands - gross. This year, her neck and throat were covered, as well as her upper chest (she had a short-sleeve V-neck sweater on) and one cheek had a 'spiderweb'. She added a bull-ring to her nose and a lip ring. She has completely destroyed her looks. (Meanwhile, her hubby is gorgeous).
She was telling me she works in the 'back room' of Barnes and Noble, where she's been working for the past couple of years unloading stock / inventory as it comes in on the dock. It's labor intensive and she's not happy there anymore (but she's an avid reader and gets free copies of new books which come in damaged - like the book cover corner is bent). She's applied for promotions such as assistant store manager, night manager, children's department manager, cashier supervisor, etc. which she's qualified for - but always gets passed up.
She told me 'she can't figure out' why she keeps getting passed up, while others who have been there less than she has keep getting promotions. Hmmmmmm.
As I looked at the spider-web on her left cheek and her throat covered in blue / black ink, I simply responded, "I can't imagine why".

Tattoos essentially stamp a person’s feelings from a moment in time permanently on their skin, which is either poignant or pathetic if you think about it. Some things are best left in the past instead of advertised daily on your flesh for the rest of your life.

My dad was in the Army and served in Vietnam. He hated tattoos, but several of his military friends had one or two military related tattoos. When I was in college around 2005 to 2006, one of my dad's close friends was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. My parents and other friends took turns helping him and he would sometimes stay at different houses because he didn't want to be alone. One weekend, I went up to visit my parents and he was with them. The conversation of tattoos came up and he said he hated how people went overboard with tattoos. He didn't regret the tattoos he had because they were up on his upper arms and were easily hidden by clothes. But, he didn't like people doing full-sleeve arm tattoos or neck tattoos.

R63, even saying that would leave you/the company open to the nonsense she is pulling now. If the position was filled and something had to be said, then mentioning how there were a lot of qualified candidates who had applied would be the best course.
When dealing with unskilled employees in casual positions, it's best never to give a reason for firing/not hiring them. This woman has likely finally spat it because she's endured rejection after rejection, and rather than admit that the tattoos were a colossal mistake, she feels she the right to publicly castigate the latest source of rejection. Emotionally, it's easier for her to lash out and demonise the latest company who have declined to use her services.
There are plenty of unskilled people applying for or working in shit-kicking positions who are dysfunctional enough that they can't manage to remain consistently employed. Their biggest problem is usually an inability to examine their own behaviour and acknowledge that they need to work/interact with others differently in the workplace. They always blame someone/everyone else for the turbulence.
This kind of (low) functioning is why so many workplaces using unskilled workers keep the pay low and put little effort into improving the conditions. Those factors make it easier to churn through so many workers and get shot of the people like this woman, who will eventually get taken on by a company so desperate for workers that they'll take anyone. It will be an utter shithole of a workplace and that will likely lead to a further rant from her. There are also "lifers" in these workplaces who can hang in there for years, even decades. They can be brutal to anyone coming in who they just don't like or who they feel isn't pulling their weight.

Black Hair discrimination is a real thing, and it's racist as hell.
Sorry, you can't equate the needed and necessary Crown Act with "tattoos".
Don't even try.
I hope that New York bill fails. The last thing we need as a society is a ban on discrimination based on tattoos. There's literally no more justifiable discrimination based on looks.

It will be hard to prove discrimination based on 'appearance' when the employer can always justify with 'we chose a better candidate'.

Guys in the Navy would get them overseas. We had a warrant officer who had them all over his body - including his tongue and genitalia. And this was in the middle eighties!

It's a clear sign of mental illness and VISIBLE tattoos are clear statements that "I don't want a regular job or any kind of career".

R118. Exactly - it's their way of playing perpetual victim and 'no one wants to hire me'.

"There's literally no more justifiable discrimination based on looks."
You're so cute in your innocence. People are discriminated all the time based on their looks. They are promoted based on their looks. I work for a company that hired a girl to be a scheduler which was a pretty basic job. She didn't have much experience BUT she is fucking beautiful and within 2 years she was promoted to a management position and is now one of the higher ups in the company. No skills, but great looks gets you far.
And let's not even get started on the discrimination that happens every single day to obese people. I can testify to this, having been morbidly obese in the past to now being a normal weight. The way people interact with me on the daily is so different from when I had fat. It's been eye opening, to say the least.

It’s very sad. I’m sorry to say most people would see this elective disfigurement as a sign of more serious issues of identity and conformity.
For me, it’s another level of sadness. I have a red birthmark on my face that becomes more pronounced when I’m nervous or sweating. It’s something I don’t think often about, but remember when I look in the mirror or see photos.

So right, R117. My grandfather was in the British Navy during WW2. He and his shipmates would get tattoos on occasion when their ship went into port. He had one tattoo from Mombasa in Kenya on his left upper arm, one with a large elephant and "Ceylon" on his lower right arm, and one from Egypt after the ship went through the Suez Canal on his upper right arm. None were obnoxiously big. He was proud of them, and of his travels.
The ship once went to a Free French port in Senegal to treat the injured after a encounter with the Germans. The French refused to let them off the ship. Pop's attitude toward the French was sour for the rest of his life. We never brought the nation or the language up in conversation. We knew better.
Once afternoon after an operation on a broken hip in his 80s, he started hallucinating. He was panicked. "Cover the holes. Cover the holes. What about the deck below us? He never talked about the naval combat he may have faced. My Mom says he helped to evacuate Dunkirk on a small boat taken out by one of his neighbors on the English coast. They made four trips back and forth.
I see overly-tattooed people and I realize their ink may not bring memories or pride in the past, not like the brave men who went to war. Those men earned those tattoos. I also have no great feeling for the pampered, self-centered people in the latest generations, either. They have no concept of what it might be like if they are directed to war.

You should write a memoir about your experience, titled “Fat Like Me.”

The whole point of getting all these tats is supposed to be saying "fuck you" to society, and basically that you don't and won't ever want a square job like that. So she's either a fucking idiot who just got these tats and doesn't understand the meaning, or she's a fucking liar and is just trying to get tik tok famous. Either of those options tell me she's an asshole and should be avoided at all costs. Whoever said it's a sign she's an HR nightmare and would be calling in for stupid reasons, or constantly complaining, is right. Thanks for branding yourself as being a pain in the ass, we might not have known otherwise and now we can avoid you.

Eldergay in my late 50s-
When I was growing up the only people I ever saw with face tattoos were Hell’s Angels. They wanted to set themselves apart. Now we have people demanding equal opportunities when they look like personality disordered Skittles.
