[quote]America’s sweetheart, Emily Blunt.
Can you be "America's sweetheart" if you're not, you know, American?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 20, 2024 1:34 AM |
It looks incredibly formulaic, but the formula does sound like it will provide a hit: rom-com + action-adventure, with the heroine being intelligent and accomplished and the hero being laid-back and cool.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 20, 2024 1:37 AM |
Emily Blunt is the UK’s reigning cunt.
I think $1 billion is doubtful.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 20, 2024 1:37 AM |
Prior to La La Land, Ryan Gosling had never carried a film to gross over $100 million domestically.
Given that the Fall Guy is more of an industry-inside pic, it will probably do similar to other “industry pics” with big stars
The first is of course La La Land
It did $151mm dom and $433 worldwide
The other is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
It did $142mm dom and $377 worldwide
Those are INCREDIBLY similar numbers
Therefore, it is highly likely the Fall Guy will make around $150 million in NA and around $400 million worldwide. This genre has a ceiling.

Gosling and Blunt have ZERO chemistry. Don’t believe the Barbenheimer hype. Neither one is an opening weekend box office star.

Emily Blunt is a fantastic actress but she’s like Debra Kerr or Jill Clayburgh. There just isn’t that oomph that a real leading lady like Emma Stone or Margot Robbie has.
Emily Blunt consistently works and is cast in many high profile roles for one reason
SHE DOES NOT OVERPOWER THE LEADING MAN. SHE MAKES HIS ACTING BETTER.

What the FUCK has Emily Blunt been a “fantastic actress” in??!?

At ages 40+, they both look rather old for this type of mindless popcorn movie. Hetero couples in their forties, if they happen to *still* be single and dating, don’t sing Taylor Swift songs to mend away their blues.
I’d recast with Glen Powell and Jodie Comer.

No one is talking about it. Barbie was an event of the summer, but it had threads and threads on DL discussing it a year before it premiered. Even in a godforsaken place like DL with only a couple of dozen posters, you can easily gauge what will become big and what won't.

Emily Blunt is specifically chosen for roles so she doesn’t overpower the leading man.
The correct person to cast for this to make it more appealing would to men would be, for better or worse, Sydney Sweeney.

by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 2, 2024 12:16 PM |
The failure of Fall Guy, if it does fail, will only confirm one thing
YOU CANNOT RESURRECT MORIBUND INTELLECTUALLY PROPERTY BECAUSE AN A-LISTER HAS FOND MEMORIES OF IT AS A CHILD
This is what killed Johnny Depp. The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows got greenlit because he liked them as a child.
Barbie became a blockbuster because the people who played with Barbie are now in their 30s and 40s and have fond memories of it as a child.
The Fall Guy was also from the Eighties but the only people who remember it are in their 80s, too. I had never heard of it until this was greenlit and I’m a millennial who had followed show business since the late 90s. I used to read TV Guides at night when I had insomnia. I had NEVER heard of this show. It’s not even referenced in other shows from the 80s like The Golden Girls. It has no cultural currency.
So if it does fail, now looking increasingly likely, Gosling is allowed a big flop because he made so much money for Barbie.
But you know what this means don’t you? What did Johnny Depp do after those flops?
RYAN GOSLING TO STAR IN PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 6 AS JACK SPARROW’S SON, ZACK SPARROW
But what does this mean?

by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 3, 2024 3:06 AM |
I can kind of buy the argument that Gosling is a bigger star today due to ‘Barbie’. Everyone talked about his performance and he owned the Oscars this year with his performance. Clearly, many are amused by his hijinks on SNL as well. One could say he’s more bankable due to Barbenheimer even though he wasn’t the lead.
But Emily Blunt? She got a pure coattail Oscar nomination for being a female in ‘Oppenheimer’ in a less competitive category. The success of that film cannot be attributed to Kitty Oppenheimer! Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. are hotter after ‘Oppenheimer’. Emily is lucky to be in yet another wife/girlfriend role here. I’m dumbfounded by these (mainly hetero white male) critics who always claim she has any star quality onscreen or acting talent. She’s such a bore.

Saw it last night in Los Angeles and there were probably six of us in the theater. But to be fair, it was showing on multiple screens so maybe the earlier and later showings had a bigger crowd.
It's fun film. Heard of the original "The Fall Guy", but have never seen it, but the film is its own thing. Very meta about the stunt community and film industry so if you are into the ins and out of the showbiz, the jokes pays off more.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 3, 2024 6:53 PM |
If this fails, that’s going to be a huge wakeup call for Hollywood
This is what’s notable
There was another film, a male targeted action movie, based on 80s intellectual property, starring another 43 year old white male actor with a gigantic head, who did the movie because he has fond memories of it as a child.
It went straight to streaming and was a huge success.
This would indicate that a whole crop of male stars in their forties (the Chrises and their peers) are no longer bankable in theatrical films, unless they are in a film with wide intellectual property appeal.
In other words… theatrical star driven male targeted action movies are dead. Unless they are IP.

Ryan and Margot were box-office poison before Barbie, and now it's no different after Barbie. Barbie was a phenomenon because of the Mattel doll, which all women played with as little girls. Its success had nothing to do with the cast.

I’m gonna say that The Fall Guy is likely to underperform because it doesn’t really deliver. As a comedy it’s rarely laugh-out-loud funny, and because the tone is so jokey throughout the action scenes feel weightless. Instead of promoting this movie NONSTOP for the past 9 months, Universal really should have brought this thing back into the edit room for another pass.

Here will be the immediate effect:
Amazon had committed to a theatrical platform for Red One with Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson; that will be scuttled (movie is rumored to be a trainwreck anyway)
Lionsgate has two Henry Cavill movies slated for theaters: In the Grey with Jake Gyllenhaal (finished) and a Highlander remake in preproduction. Henry Cavill just had two bombs. In the Grey will be punted to streaming; Highlander will recast it with a younger actor, maybe Mescal or Butler, but still go theatrical. Chad Stahelski is too important to Lionsgate to go straight to streaming.
Chris Hemsworth’s Furiosa should do well, but he’s unrecognizable in that movie. IP is the star now. The actors are just… actors.

This is the big Cinemark on the 405. This is in one hour. In LA.
The could be a legendary turkey. Think Ishtar.
Nobody wanted to see this movie.
I would be very surprised if it did $25 million. This could fall to 18-19. I see this doing Argylle numbers (also Universal, but just releasing for Apple). That opened to $17 million and did $45 domestic.
This will kill vanity projects all over Hollywood. No one will be able to pitch a star vehicle to a studio unless it’s attached to a franchise or its awards bait.
Universal just greenlit a Leonardo DaVinci biopic. I wouldn’t be shocked if Gosling agrees to star. It’s the only studio work he will get from now.

Gladiator 2 will probably do very well. It simply will not do well enough to justify its budget. These things have a ceiling. You cannot spend $250 million on The Lone Ranger, you cannot spend $300 million on Gladiator.

Mescal looks remarkably like Henry Cavill in that Gladiator still. Don’t be shocked if he chosen to replace him in Highlander.
They could possibly swing Cavill to the Sean Connery role - actually not a bad idea - but it will not be made with him in the lead, unless it is reconfigured as television series or Stahelski is OK with straight to streaming. If Gosling cannot open an action movie, none of the fortysomethings can.
You are only going to get big budget action movies anymore if the brand name is a household name. The brand is the star.
And I have a very strong feeling this will be proven by Twisters doing bonkers business. All millennials remember Twister. Glen Powell like Bill Paxton merely needs to be recognizable, attractive and have a decent Q score; but the tornados are the star. And it doesn’t hurt that God appears to be launching a viral marketing campaign for it right now.
People are only going to go to the theater if they have some idea of what to expect. Yes, Twister was a stupid movie, but it was a good theater experience with its wall to wall sound (Twister was always the movie used in electronic store demonstrations for surround sound in the late 90s.)
by Anonymous | reply 138 | May 4, 2024 1:20 PM |
Cavill won’t be replaced in Highlander. He’s perfect for it, (the character is similar to Witcher) and it will most likely be a limited hit for him.
Blunt should never have been cast opposite Gosling. She’s not an action romcom star. She need to be in things where she can be masculine, sardonic, and cold as ice like Sicario and Prada.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | May 4, 2024 1:30 PM |
Glen Powell is not equivalent to Bill Paxton. He has a much bigger and broader career already. Paxton was a character actor whose biggest movie moment was Twister. He then moved to TV. Glen Powell is being positioned as a major star. That never happened for Paxton whose biggest claim to fame was one funny line “Game over man, game over,” in Aliens, and a minor role in Titanic.
Your analysis in general is really off.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | May 4, 2024 1:38 PM |
Cavill will be replaced in Highlander if Lionsgate wants it theatrical. It doesn’t matter if he would be good in it - he is simply too old and the IP is not well recognized.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | May 4, 2024 1:39 PM |
He is not going to be replaced. Period.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | May 4, 2024 1:41 PM |
People know this movie exists; they just don’t want to go to the theater to see it. The marketing is all over the place. Ryan Gosling + Emily Blunt + explosions. Who is the audience for this? Women, action film fans, rom com fans?
by Anonymous | reply 143 | May 4, 2024 1:54 PM |
True r140 except in your world, the movie Apollo 13 does not appear to exist. Apollo 13 was the highest grossing live action movie worldwide in 1995. Paxton was cast because of Apollo 13 (same studio, Universal). Bill Paxton was widely recognizable but not particularly famous, much like Glen Powell is now, and that allowed him to take a backseat to the real star of the movie, the tornados. That’s why they cast the star of “Mad About You” for his costar and not Michelle Pfeiffer or Demi Moore.
“Glen Powell is being positioned as a major star” by who, Darryl F. Zanuck? There is no positioning as a major star any more because major stars do not exist. Hitman has a NINTEY SIX fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes but it’s going straight to streaming. Glen Powell is going to be about as famous as any actor of his generation will get. Look at all the actors of Powell’s generation: Miles Teller, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Austin Butler. None of them are particularly famous. Austin Butler is the most famous of those three and his film The Bikeriders was PULLED from general release by Disney two weeks before opening and is still sitting on a shelf.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | May 4, 2024 1:55 PM |
You could make the argument that a lack of competition helped Anyone But You at the box office. Twisters will really test whether or not Glen Powell can put asses on seats. I don’t think Twisters is that IP driven considering that it’s been twenty-eight years since the standalone first film.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | May 4, 2024 1:59 PM |
Well r142 has spoken! Never mind that Lionsgate bought Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare for him to prop up his star for Highlander and it bombed spectacularly. Lionsgate didn’t even want to risk worldwide theatrical rights; this is only being released in North American theaters. Amazon Prime bought the film for all overseas territories where it will go straight to Prime.
If Lionsgate wants to make the film that badly with him, they will just do a day and date release in which case many theaters will not even show it.

R75 / R77 - So it appears for Emily Blunt that a Quiet Place is the theater showing Fall Guy.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | May 4, 2024 4:28 PM |
Deadline still says a 28 opening. Maybe they are expecting weekends matinees to lift it.
Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is already out of the top ten after two weekends. Cavill cannot carry a film, which is actually unfair because if you saw Argylle and Ministry, he’s pretty much a supporting character. But he agreed to top billing so those are his turkeys. I don’t think he has a manager anymore since firing Dany Garcia.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | May 4, 2024 4:30 PM |
What a tremendous flop and proof that Emily Blunt is bankable. Never has been.
Hollywood! Stop shoving her down our fucking throats. She’s not even talented and looks like a skinner Rachel Dratch. Debbie Downer would be a great starring vehicle for her.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | May 4, 2024 4:37 PM |
It's a fun movie, but shouldn't be two hours long. Gosling is charming in the movie. The plot is silly. Aaron Taylor Johnson doesn't appear to be aging well. His body is great, but his face is showing some cracks. As for the box-office, movies don't interest young people. These budgets need to get a lot smaller.

Even the bomb ‘Prince of Persia’ made more on its opening weekend and that was fourteen years ago.
$30.1 million in its first 3-day weekend of release and it didn’t even make $100 million. That film killed Gylenhaal’s Hollywood aspirations.

Not being interested in acting has kept Cavill from being an actual leading man. He merely wants to appear in genre franchises. He has said this many times.
The problem with Cavill is that he has essentially gotten reduced to being a “cypher”. He is merely in his films, he doesn’t play a character, you cannot say anything about his character that isn’t communicated in exposition. The only movies in which he has not played the stock “Henry Cavill template” are Man from UNCLE and Enola Holmes, and he was good in those.
There was a finding on a creative writing platform that Henry Cavill was the most cited person used when writers imagined their protagonists. That cypher quality is the reason for that.

Gosling and his team must be feeling pretty nervous right now. He can't be relied upon to open an action film or a rom-com. The Fall Guy has been pushed for weeks so it wasn't like it suffered from a lack of publicity. Hopefully this humbles him a bit. His career needed Barbie and Barbie came into it at the right time but I think he thought Barbenheimer would last forever. Throughout the whole award season, he did zero interviews on the red carpet and at the Critics Choice Awards he even had a security guard form a protective shield around him as if he was the President. So hopefully this knocks him down a peg.

Adults in their forties don’t blather about Taylor Swift and spicy margaritas. Gosling and Blunt are too old to play “cute-sie” and struggling newbies in their professions. Lay off the fillers and play more age appropriate characters!

This was the movie Gosling was going to do for Universal before he decided to do Fall Guy. Universal should have only agreed to make Fall Guy in exchange for Gosling doing The Wolf Man (a fairly standard occurrence once; Billy Murray agreed to do his most famous role, Ghostbusters, in exchange for his forgotten vanity project The Razors Edge.)
My God Ryan Gosling looks like a different person now.

The plot for The Fall Guy is actually somewhat similar to The Nice Guys - a jokey neonoir set in LA with Gisling as a hapless anti-Philip Marlowe. That movie flopped which begs the question why he decided to use the same formula again. Why even bother to call it The Fall Guy when that series centered on a bounty hunter who entraps marks with elaborate stunts.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | May 5, 2024 3:38 AM |
I thought the movie was a lot of fun, but my theater tonight, on a Saturday night in Union Square, was maybe 10% full. To be fair, the entire theater was shockingly empty. It’s really true that Gen Z is just not going to the movies anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | May 5, 2024 3:39 AM |
OP not nearly the BO predicted. Including the Thursday night preview The Fall Guy made $10.4M opening day. It'll be lucky if it makes $28M opening weekend
by Anonymous | reply 176 | May 5, 2024 3:44 AM |
Though supposedly a love story, the reviews make it seem more like a stunt-driven action film. Which explains why young women aren’t going. Also Gosling’s appeal is to women in their 30s, 40s and above, and they’re going to wait to see this on streaming.
“Anyone But You” had young, pretty stars with great bodies taking their clothes off, which brought in teenaged girls and young women in their 20s. This movie was never going to get that crowd, it needs crossover appeal to make a mint, amd it’s not getting that.
And for the Emily Blunt haters, Deadline reported that 35% of attendees went to see it for her as opposed to 50% who went for Gosling. While neither figure is great, hers is higher than I would have thought while his is much lower. Personally, I like her, she always reads as interestingly intelligent and neurotic, which is hardly a typical leading lady type in Hollywood films today. And I still think she deserved a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for “The Devil Wears Prada.”
by Anonymous | reply 177 | May 5, 2024 4:35 AM |
Movie would have been better without her. Focus on Gosling and the stunts. It’s aiming to be too many movies and Gosling just has no chemistry with her.

Deadline:
SUNDAY AM Writethru after Saturday AM Update: Universal’s The Fall Guy isn’t so strong, and nobody is really shocked.
While it was projected to do at least $30M, and it’s coming in at $28M, this is the range for original action comedies, even when they star Ryan Gosling. PostTrak exits report he’s 50% of the reason why people went to see the movie (versus 35% for Emily Blunt).
The opening for Fall Guy is actually on the higher end of Gosling starts, ranked third after anomaly Barbie ($162M) and Blade Runner 2049 ($32.7M), yet further down on Blunt’s. It’s looking like her tenth-best opening of her career stateside, short of Edge of Tomorrow ($28.7M) and Jungle Cruise ($35M with an asterisk – it did have a theatrical day-and-date PVOD on Disney+).
by Anonymous | reply 188 | May 5, 2024 2:52 PM |
In addition, Amazon MGM Studios’ Challengers did a have good hold at -49%, meaning they were able to keep some younger women away from the Gosling pic (71% women, 18-24 at 44%). However, the Zendaya tennis rom-com is coming in $1.1M lighter than expected (yesterday pic was at $8.7M) for a $7.6M weekend 2.

Not with them as a pair. Had Ryan been paired up with someone else it may be done better business - Jennifer Lawrence (she wouldn’t take a girlfriend role though), Zoe Kravitz, that blonde with the titties, or even gone older and put him opposite Sandra Bullock - it may have done well.
