Barbie became a blockbuster because the people who played with Barbie are now in their 30s and 40s and have fond memories of it as a child.

The Fall Guy was also from the Eighties but the only people who remember it are in their 80s, too. I had never heard of it until this was greenlit and I’m a millennial who had followed show business since the late 90s. I used to read TV Guides at night when I had insomnia. I had NEVER heard of this show. It’s not even referenced in other shows from the 80s like The Golden Girls. It has no cultural currency.

So if it does fail, now looking increasingly likely, Gosling is allowed a big flop because he made so much money for Barbie.

Instead of promoting this movie NONSTOP for the past 9 months, Universal really should have brought this thing back into the edit room for another pass.

In the Grey will be punted to streaming; Highlander will recast it with a younger actor, maybe Mescal or Butler, but still go theatrical. Chad Stahelski is too important to Lionsgate to go straight to streaming.

Chris Hemsworth’s Furiosa should do well, but he’s unrecognizable in that movie. IP is the star now. The actors are just… actors.

Universal just greenlit a Leonardo DaVinci biopic. I wouldn’t be shocked if Gosling agrees to star. It’s the only studio work he will get from now.

Mescal looks remarkably like Henry Cavill in that Gladiator still. Don’t be shocked if he chosen to replace him in Highlander.

They could possibly swing Cavill to the Sean Connery role - actually not a bad idea - but it will not be made with him in the lead, unless it is reconfigured as television series or Stahelski is OK with straight to streaming. If Gosling cannot open an action movie, none of the fortysomethings can.

You are only going to get big budget action movies anymore if the brand name is a household name. The brand is the star.

And I have a very strong feeling this will be proven by Twisters doing bonkers business. All millennials remember Twister. Glen Powell like Bill Paxton merely needs to be recognizable, attractive and have a decent Q score; but the tornados are the star. And it doesn’t hurt that God appears to be launching a viral marketing campaign for it right now.

People are only going to go to the theater if they have some idea of what to expect. Yes, Twister was a stupid movie, but it was a good theater experience with its wall to wall sound (Twister was always the movie used in electronic store demonstrations for surround sound in the late 90s.)

Cavill won’t be replaced in Highlander. He’s perfect for it, (the character is similar to Witcher) and it will most likely be a limited hit for him.

Blunt should never have been cast opposite Gosling. She’s not an action romcom star. She need to be in things where she can be masculine, sardonic, and cold as ice like Sicario and Prada.

Glen Powell is not equivalent to Bill Paxton. He has a much bigger and broader career already. Paxton was a character actor whose biggest movie moment was Twister. He then moved to TV. Glen Powell is being positioned as a major star. That never happened for Paxton whose biggest claim to fame was one funny line “Game over man, game over,” in Aliens, and a minor role in Titanic.

Paxton was cast because of Apollo 13 (same studio, Universal). Bill Paxton was widely recognizable but not particularly famous, much like Glen Powell is now, and that allowed him to take a backseat to the real star of the movie, the tornados. That’s why they cast the star of “Mad About You” for his costar and not Michelle Pfeiffer or Demi Moore.

“Glen Powell is being positioned as a major star” by who, Darryl F. Zanuck? There is no positioning as a major star any more because major stars do not exist. Hitman has a NINTEY SIX fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes but it’s going straight to streaming. Glen Powell is going to be about as famous as any actor of his generation will get. Look at all the actors of Powell’s generation: Miles Teller, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Austin Butler. None of them are particularly famous. Austin Butler is the most famous of those three and his film The Bikeriders was PULLED from general release by Disney two weeks before opening and is still sitting on a shelf.

You could make the argument that a lack of competition helped Anyone But You at the box office. Twisters will really test whether or not Glen Powell can put asses on seats. I don’t think Twisters is that IP driven considering that it’s been twenty-eight years since the standalone first film.

Well r142 has spoken! Never mind that Lionsgate bought Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare for him to prop up his star for Highlander and it bombed spectacularly. Lionsgate didn’t even want to risk worldwide theatrical rights; this is only being released in North American theaters. Amazon Prime bought the film for all overseas territories where it will go straight to Prime.

If Lionsgate wants to make the film that badly with him, they will just do a day and date release in which case many theaters will not even show it.

Deadline still says a 28 opening. Maybe they are expecting weekends matinees to lift it.

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is already out of the top ten after two weekends. Cavill cannot carry a film, which is actually unfair because if you saw Argylle and Ministry, he’s pretty much a supporting character. But he agreed to top billing so those are his turkeys. I don’t think he has a manager anymore since firing Dany Garcia.

What a tremendous flop and proof that Emily Blunt is bankable. Never has been.

Not being interested in acting has kept Cavill from being an actual leading man. He merely wants to appear in genre franchises. He has said this many times.

The problem with Cavill is that he has essentially gotten reduced to being a “cypher”. He is merely in his films, he doesn’t play a character, you cannot say anything about his character that isn’t communicated in exposition. The only movies in which he has not played the stock “Henry Cavill template” are Man from UNCLE and Enola Holmes, and he was good in those.

There was a finding on a creative writing platform that Henry Cavill was the most cited person used when writers imagined their protagonists. That cypher quality is the reason for that.

Gosling and his team must be feeling pretty nervous right now. He can't be relied upon to open an action film or a rom-com. The Fall Guy has been pushed for weeks so it wasn't like it suffered from a lack of publicity. Hopefully this humbles him a bit. His career needed Barbie and Barbie came into it at the right time but I think he thought Barbenheimer would last forever. Throughout the whole award season, he did zero interviews on the red carpet and at the Critics Choice Awards he even had a security guard form a protective shield around him as if he was the President. So hopefully this knocks him down a peg.

This was the movie Gosling was going to do for Universal before he decided to do Fall Guy. Universal should have only agreed to make Fall Guy in exchange for Gosling doing The Wolf Man (a fairly standard occurrence once; Billy Murray agreed to do his most famous role, Ghostbusters, in exchange for his forgotten vanity project The Razors Edge.)

The plot for The Fall Guy is actually somewhat similar to The Nice Guys - a jokey neonoir set in LA with Gisling as a hapless anti-Philip Marlowe. That movie flopped which begs the question why he decided to use the same formula again. Why even bother to call it The Fall Guy when that series centered on a bounty hunter who entraps marks with elaborate stunts.

I thought the movie was a lot of fun, but my theater tonight, on a Saturday night in Union Square, was maybe 10% full. To be fair, the entire theater was shockingly empty. It’s really true that Gen Z is just not going to the movies anymore.

Though supposedly a love story, the reviews make it seem more like a stunt-driven action film. Which explains why young women aren’t going. Also Gosling’s appeal is to women in their 30s, 40s and above, and they’re going to wait to see this on streaming.

“Anyone But You” had young, pretty stars with great bodies taking their clothes off, which brought in teenaged girls and young women in their 20s. This movie was never going to get that crowd, it needs crossover appeal to make a mint, amd it’s not getting that.

And for the Emily Blunt haters, Deadline reported that 35% of attendees went to see it for her as opposed to 50% who went for Gosling. While neither figure is great, hers is higher than I would have thought while his is much lower. Personally, I like her, she always reads as interestingly intelligent and neurotic, which is hardly a typical leading lady type in Hollywood films today. And I still think she deserved a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Movie would have been better without her. Focus on Gosling and the stunts. It’s aiming to be too many movies and Gosling just has no chemistry with her.

SUNDAY AM Writethru after Saturday AM Update: Universal’s The Fall Guy isn’t so strong, and nobody is really shocked.

While it was projected to do at least $30M, and it’s coming in at $28M, this is the range for original action comedies, even when they star Ryan Gosling. PostTrak exits report he’s 50% of the reason why people went to see the movie (versus 35% for Emily Blunt).

The opening for Fall Guy is actually on the higher end of Gosling starts, ranked third after anomaly Barbie ($162M) and Blade Runner 2049 ($32.7M), yet further down on Blunt’s. It’s looking like her tenth-best opening of her career stateside, short of Edge of Tomorrow ($28.7M) and Jungle Cruise ($35M with an asterisk – it did have a theatrical day-and-date PVOD on Disney+).

In addition, Amazon MGM Studios’ Challengers did a have good hold at -49%, meaning they were able to keep some younger women away from the Gosling pic (71% women, 18-24 at 44%). However, the Zendaya tennis rom-com is coming in $1.1M lighter than expected (yesterday pic was at $8.7M) for a $7.6M weekend 2.

IMHO there were too many clips of Ryan and Emily in their jokey banter, laughing at each other’s jokes, and audiences said PASS. There isn’t any incentive to pay $20 for the movie with those two middle aged stars.

Not with them as a pair. Had Ryan been paired up with someone else it may be done better business - Jennifer Lawrence (she wouldn’t take a girlfriend role though), Zoe Kravitz, that blonde with the titties, or even gone older and put him opposite Sandra Bullock - it may have done well.
