What's it like living in Croatia?

What are the guy there like? Is it a poor country, even for people who have good jobs?

by Anonymousreply 57April 30, 2024 10:02 AM

One of the few countries in the entire world where genocide was committed.

That speaks volumes about the country and its people.

by Anonymousreply 1June 22, 2023 10:44 AM

They fell into the tourism trap, so the economy is a bit stagnant in the innovation department and their beaches are getting more and more ruined by hotels lined up right next to them just like in Spain. Plus, the coastal parts are getting depopulated rapidly, people are streaming into the capital. It's not a poor country, average by EU standards I'd say.

Can't tell you much about the guys, I've little experience with them. I also live right next door, so I might be too similar to them to be able to characterise them properly. They have that Balkan brashness about them, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 2June 22, 2023 10:51 AM

If you are Catholic, it's a fair place to live (80% of Croats are Catholic). If you're not, it's not so fair. Croatia got a good deal when the former Yugoslavia was carved up, with most of the Dalmation Coast remaining within its borders. Split, Dubrovnik, the Dalmation Islands (Hvar, Brac), and lovely national parks.

Croatia has a long history of brutality and butchery, like the rest of Eastern Europe, with Serbs, Jews, gypsies, repeat victims of Croatian barbarity. Then of course there were the various wars between Croats and Bosnians (Muslims) and Croats and Serbs. It might also help to remember that Croatia fought on the side of the Nazis during WWII and participated in the extermination of the Jews, Serbs and gypsies.

by Anonymousreply 3June 22, 2023 11:15 AM

White on White crime.

by Anonymousreply 4June 22, 2023 11:16 AM

R4 Is that suppose to be "mitigation"?

by Anonymousreply 5June 22, 2023 11:17 AM

Middle-class life in the cities is fine, and Dalmatia is exceptionally attractive. But real improvishment exists in some villages, and small-town life can be hard.

Croatia, though, has never come to terms with the cruelties of its past -- including the Ustaše and Operation Storm -- and that continues to be a black cloud over its otherwise sunny skies.

by Anonymousreply 6June 22, 2023 11:20 AM

R6 To be fair, there was no reckoning of the WWII atrocities because Tito -- a Serb -- thought it would damage post-War Yugoslav unity. But even today, you'll learn more about the exterminations at the Jasenovac concentration camp on the US Holocaust Museum site than in Croatia.

by Anonymousreply 7June 22, 2023 11:31 AM

They like white guys.

by Anonymousreply 8June 22, 2023 1:05 PM

Heavily foreskinned

by Anonymousreply 9June 22, 2023 2:25 PM

Tito was Croatian, not Serbian.

I don't know why I bother reading these type of threads knowing that Americans know next to nothing about history.

by Anonymousreply 10June 22, 2023 2:45 PM

Are Croats as shifty and paranoid as the Serbs?

by Anonymousreply 11June 22, 2023 2:50 PM

Yes, it's a mistake to identify Tito as Serb, but that doesn't nullify the point of R7. The Wikipedia page on Jasenovac is enlightening for those who only think of Auschwitz and Dachau when they think of concentration camps.

Violet and I had to leave there suddenly last summer.

by Anonymousreply 13June 22, 2023 3:52 PM

How rich are the celebrities in Croatia? Not Hollywood or British rich?

by Anonymousreply 14June 22, 2023 3:53 PM

The most important takeaway from the article at R12 is always remember the Christo-fascists and run-of-the-mill fascists are our friends and protectors. They only want to get rid of the trannies, not us regular gays.

by Anonymousreply 15June 22, 2023 4:08 PM

It's shite. Don't come here.

by Anonymousreply 16August 8, 2023 3:16 PM

In Croatia, they have no women, only mules. They will kill you if you look at their mules.

by Anonymousreply 17August 8, 2023 3:19 PM

Germany fought on the side of the NAZIS

by Anonymousreply 18August 8, 2023 3:25 PM

R17 What the hell are you blabbering about?

by Anonymousreply 19August 8, 2023 3:29 PM

R1 One of the few countries where genocide was committed? Are you even aware that you live in the country that was taken by the natives you exterminared, you stupid queen?

by Anonymousreply 20April 25, 2024 7:38 PM

R7 Tito was Croatian, plus the majority of Yugoslav resistence was Croatian. Croatian population was divided in two parts, partisan and fascists. A small Dalmatian island had more partisan soldiers in the most important battle than Serbian capital. Serbians were in quislind Chetniks and joined partisans at the end of the war.

by Anonymousreply 21April 25, 2024 7:45 PM

Lousy salaries so lots of Croats are leaving the country for greener pastures. The coastal towns are super pretty but smell like cat's piss. People are xenophobic and super religious. Men have mostly huge peepees and know how to throw a mean fuck.

by Anonymousreply 22April 25, 2024 8:37 PM

It's no Montenegro.

by Anonymousreply 23April 25, 2024 8:45 PM

Some really wonderful pop and rock come out of Croatia.

by Anonymousreply 24April 25, 2024 8:46 PM

Ring Them Bells...

She met a Londoner first but they did not hit it off

'Cause everything she approached, he got bronchial cough

And so she went to Madrid and met a handsome senior

But he like to throw the bull and he was no matador

She also bombed out in Brussells, in Mallorca and Rome

'Till someone said, "Try Dubrovnik, dear, before you go home"

'Cause it's the kind of a town where you'll be likely to fall

And all the tony cognoscenti find the Balkans a ball

by Anonymousreply 25April 25, 2024 8:59 PM

i saw an infographic on reddit regarding a survey across europe "how safe do you feel walking alone at night?". Croatia was at the top.

by Anonymousreply 26April 25, 2024 9:22 PM

In Croatia all seems to breathe freedom and peace, and to make one forget the world and all its sad turmoils.

by Anonymousreply 27April 26, 2024 1:02 AM

R27 BS. It sucks here.

by Anonymousreply 28April 26, 2024 10:23 AM

Where are you from R28?

by Anonymousreply 29April 26, 2024 10:35 AM

Yes, R28, but do you have a big cock?

by Anonymousreply 30April 26, 2024 10:57 AM

R28 who did you vote for?

by Anonymousreply 31April 26, 2024 11:47 AM

I'm planning a trip there at some point. It looks beautiful and everyhing I've been reading says it's perfectly safe. I'm not buying the bullshit here.

by Anonymousreply 32April 26, 2024 11:54 AM

Re antifascism, about the most important 8th Corps of Yugoslav partisans:

On 30 November 1944 the 8th Dalmatian Corps, without the military command, had 34,548 soldiers, out of which 25,127 were Croats, 4,806 Serbs, 236 Muslims, 61 Jews, and 4,318 others, mostly Slovenes and Montenegrins.

by Anonymousreply 37April 26, 2024 12:30 PM

Croatia is no conchy where peasant girl can grow up to be arsheetekt and fashion icon!

by Anonymousreply 38April 26, 2024 12:32 PM

R28 I know how you feel. Seema like criminals guided by the Uber piece of shit have won. I am desperate too. Checking the news all the time to see if the opposition will unite, but it is totally unrealistic.

by Anonymousreply 39April 26, 2024 2:36 PM

They really don't like the gays

by Anonymousreply 40April 26, 2024 5:17 PM

R40, all the laws in that link in Croatia give LGB people the same right as hets, even if support is spotty among the populace. So I'm not sure what you mean.

by Anonymousreply 41April 26, 2024 6:45 PM

*same rights as hets

by Anonymousreply 42April 26, 2024 6:46 PM

Breeder freedoms

by Anonymousreply 43April 26, 2024 6:52 PM

No, R43, not at all. Freedom from censorship and discrimantion are not "breeder freedoms."

by Anonymousreply 44April 26, 2024 6:54 PM

R39 Are you from Croatia?

by Anonymousreply 45April 29, 2024 11:53 AM

R20, that poster is so dumb. Genocide was VERY common throughout history.

by Anonymousreply 46April 29, 2024 12:56 PM

R40, Croatia is gay friendly compared to the rest of Eastern Europe.

by Anonymousreply 47April 29, 2024 12:57 PM

Croatia has a population of 3.8 million, which is akin to Iowa (3.2 million) or Connecticut (3.6 million)

by Anonymousreply 48April 29, 2024 1:04 PM

We had about 4.5 million not that long ago. All the young people left for Germany, Ireland, Austria...and they ones left don't reproduce. In a few decades we will cease to exist. And Germany will probably take over our land. It's for the better anyway. We are not capable of running a country

by Anonymousreply 49April 29, 2024 1:26 PM

[quote] I'm planning a trip there at some point. It looks beautiful and everyhing I've been reading says it's perfectly safe. I'm not buying the bullshit here.

Serbia is where I would never go. The Serbs are inhuman as we learned from the atrocities they committed in the 1990s. The anti-Croatia comments here have the stink of Serbian sympathizers on them.

by Anonymousreply 50April 29, 2024 1:39 PM

The EU, the Dalmatian coast, and Goran Visjnic. What else could anyone ask for.

by Anonymousreply 51April 29, 2024 1:56 PM

R51 Haven't heard that name in years. He is despised here. Cheated on his wife, had a baby with his lover, claimed that it wasn't his untill the tests show it is, has no connection to her apart from paying the alimony, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 52April 29, 2024 4:26 PM

Who are the closeted gays here. Besides Nizetic? Is Rozga bi or gay? I've heard that both recently deceased Massimo and Bago were bi/gay

by Anonymousreply 53April 29, 2024 4:29 PM

R45 Yes, I am from Zagreb.

by Anonymousreply 54April 29, 2024 5:00 PM

R53 According to our president it is the guy from your hometown, Habijan.

Seems like he is the Croatian version of DL's Miss Lindzebelle.

by Anonymousreply 55April 29, 2024 5:03 PM

R55 What do you mean by according to our president?

by Anonymousreply 56April 29, 2024 11:10 PM

R56 when president Milanović outed Habijan, saying: he is gay isn't he?

For other DLers, Habijan is member of right wing homophobic party and minister in government. When he became minister the press published his picture where he was "caught" walking the street with a mysterious brunette, that later turned out to be daughter in law of a senior member of the same party.
